World Mission Sunday Mission Cooperation Sunday

    Second Collection ~This Weekend

Today, we respond, “Here I Am, Send Me,” to our baptismal call to mission, and we offer, at the Eucharistic celebration, our prayers and our generous financial support to continue the mission of Jesus through a double appeal. The World Mission Sunday appeal is for the universal church and Mis-sionary Cooperation Plan appeal supports the missionary group assigned this year to our parish. As always, your prayers are your most treasured gift to the Missions. Your prayers and financial help, offered today, support mission priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay catechists who are Christ’s witnesses to a world so in need of His healing, love, and peace.

Most importantly, if you are experiencing any symp-toms of illness, please stay at home to rest and recover fully be-fore returning to Mass.

    Active Parish Membership Means:

Registration (18+ required) in the parish for a suf-ficient period of time and use of the envelope sys-tem or electronic giving in support of the parish

Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays & Holy Days

Confirmation Students ~ The Group 4 confirmation students have been notified of their confirmation date which is this Saturday, October 24 at 1:00pm at the Transfiguration Campus. Since there is no practice ahead of time, we ask that each candidate arrive 30 minutes early. Each family of 4 will have a reserved pew. The family name will be posted on the end of the pew, along with your son or daughter’s certificate. The student should sit closest to the center aisle with their sponsor beside them.

Homeschool Meeting Dates ~ Students in grades 4 and 5 will meet on Wednesday October 21st. 4th grade will meet at 6:00pm, and 5th grade will meet at 6:30pm. On Wednesday October 28th, the 6th grade homeschool students will meet at 6:00pm, and the 7th grade homeschoolers will meet at 7:00pm.

Youth Group ~ Last Sunday, members of our Youth Group spent some time cleaning up the Memorial Garden. They weeded, mulched, and planted. Then, they relaxed with Father Jim and his puppies while enjoying a simple dinner around a bonfire. Thanks kids! Job well done.

Social Media and Teens ~ The Culture Project will join us on October 25th, from 6:00-8:00pm, at the Activity Building at the Saint Victor Campus to en-gage students in a dialogue about the use of social media. All students in grades 8-12 are invited to attend. Pizza will be served. Masks are required during the presentation, and social distancing will be maintained.

The discussion will include how the use of media can either contribute to or endanger personal happiness, relationships, and the type of person we ulti-mately become. They will share the great benefits to using social media, as well as how to avoid some of its biggest downfalls. Through the use of sto-ries, cultural examples, and personal witness, they will invite students to consider their own use of media and how we can all utilize the incredible tools that our modern day offers to become a force for good in our lives.

The Culture Project is a group of young people recommended by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Find more information about them at https://diopitt.org/the-culture-project.

R EADINGS FOR THE W EEK

REFLECT FIRST READING Cyrus was king of the mighty Persian Empire (559-529 BC) while Israel was exiled in Babylon. The prophet Isai-ah revealed God would use Cyrus to free Israel from cap-tivity. What lesson do you think Israel was supposed to learn from this revelation?

SECOND READING In his opening remarks in First Thessalonians, Paul speaks of the power and conviction with which he preached the gospel to them. How do you show the con-viction of your faith?

GOSPEL READING The religious leaders in Jerusalem were unable to trap Jesus with a seemingly trick question. How do you re-spond to non-believers who try to challenge or trick you in matters of your beliefs?

    ©LPi

GOSPEL MEDITATION Nobody enjoys paying taxes. Despite our displeasure in be-

ing forced to do so, we also realize that the monies generat-

ed from taxes allows governments to provide essential ser-

vices for its people. Corruption really gets our goat, howev-

er. When we witness malfeasance, overspending, irrespon-

sibility, and dishonesty in governmental spending, the grave

injustices make an already unpleasant and arduous task

even more difficult. The inappropriate distribution and use of

hard-earned monies can leave a person quite angry and

disconnected. It’s bad enough the government wants some-

thing from me, now God does, too?

God is not concerned necessarily with our money, although

its proper use does factor into our faith life. As the payment

of secular taxes speaks of our allegiance to the government,

our return to God speaks of our allegiance to God. All of cre-

ation, even the entire universe, is fashioned in the image and

likeness of God. What speaks to God and has meaning and

relevance to him? All of creation and indeed our very selves!

God delights in us and when we present ourselves back to

him, he delights even more! As the payment of secular taxes

is designed to secure the equitable distribution of goods and

services to all people, so is our return of ourselves to God in

gratitude meant to advance God’s kingdom here on earth.

When our exclusive and sincere allegiance is given to God,

God can use us to set things right and straight again. The

wounds of sin distort our relationship and disorder our

world. By giving ourselves and all of creation back to God in

gratitude, we acknowledge the proper Creator and Author of

life for who He is and devote our labors exclusively to God’s

kingdom and the justice, peace, or order God envisions. In

giving back to God all that belongs to God, we set the axis of

our lives correctly and put our priorities in proper order. All

of our relationships, especially with God, our brothers and

sisters, and all of creation are perceived more clearly as

they really are. Using, accumulating, wasting, exploiting,

hording, and self-preservation are no longer necessary. ©LPi
