Swachhata Pakhwada Celebration

Under the PM’s flagship campaign of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Swachhata Pakhwada
fortnight was observed from 1 April 2019 to 15 April 2019 all over the nation. On this
occasion, the Dept. of Community Medicine, under the able guidance of Dr. S.K Rasania
(Director Professor & Head Department of Community Medicine), Dr. Anita Shankar Acharya
(Professor & UHC Kalyanpuri In-Charge Department of Community Medicine), Dr. Nazish
Rasheed (Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine) and Dr. Ananya Ray
Laskar (Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine) celebrated the Swachhata
Pakhwada at UHC, Kalyanpuri. During the fortnight, various activities were performed in-
order to raise awareness about various issues related to Cleanliness and Sanitation in the
community. Mass mobilization activities such as: Role plays, Health talks, Skit
performance, Poster making competition, slogan writing competition, dance
performance, Rally with community participation, demonstration of health promoting
behaviour like hand hygiene and other innovative activities involving the community
were organised at the centre and community. A glimpse of these activities is being
presented in sequential way below:
1st April 2019
Swachhata Pakhwada celebration took off with the Swachhata Pledge taking ceremony at
the health centre in the presence of Dr Ananya Ray Laskar (Assistant Professor Department
of Community Medicine) & Dr Kartik (Professor, Dental Department Lady Hardinge Medical
College), all the staff and OPD attendee. They took the pledge with spirit to maintain clean
environment at individual and community level. A health talk on Oral and Dental Hygiene
was delivered by Intern Arushi, in which necessity of dental care along with various diseases
due to inappropriate care were explained. Hygiene maintenance was emphasized during
health talk using a poster.
Thereafter an interactive session on oro-dental health issues among patients was taken up
by Dr Kartik and team, method of cleaning teeth and oral cavity was explained. The whole
session was very well taken up by the patients.
4th April 2019
As a part of this celebration next activity was projection of Swachhata Awareness Videos
among the teachers of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Kalyanpuri which was
conducted by Dr Ananya Ray Laskar (Assistant Professor), Dr Aparna Jain (Senior
Resident), Dr Rodney Pretham Vas (Junior Resident), Astha Kushwaha (Intern) and Ayushi
Negi (Intern). The session was undertaken in the school staff room with due permission of
Principal Mam and 20 teachers and 6 support staff attended the session. The videos on
importance of sanitation, appropriate segregation and disposal of waste were projected. This
was followed by an interactive session with the teachers on waste disposal, health impact of
sanitation and hand hygiene. Through the videos, emphasis was given on the segregation
of waste produced at home and its appropriate disposal, hand hygiene – when and how to
wash hands. The teachers were motivated on sparing at least 5 minutes in the beginning or
end of their lectures to educate the students on the importance and need of cleanliness and
raise awareness on health issues arising from poor cleanliness and sanitation. This
approach of spreading awareness on cleanliness through teachers was highly appreciated.
6th April 2019
Our next activity was focused towards creation of cleanliness awareness among the OPD
attendees at the health center. A Health Talk on Prevention of Open Defecation and
Sanitation was given by Intern Ayushi in the morning in waiting area of OPD, thereafter an
interactive session was conducted on Preventive Measures for Vector Borne Diseases
among the patients. Various methods in order to maintain hygiene and keep environment
clean at individual and community level were explained during this session.
Thereafter a video projection was done at the health centre which was attended by 30
patients. 2 video clips specific on Maintenance of cleanliness in society and its
importance were showed during this session to the OPD attendees by Dr Rodney Preetham
Vaz (Junior Resident) and Dr Pallika (Junior Resident) to generate awareness.
The activity was ended with healthy interaction and discussion among the audience and
residents with the spirit to keep clean and healthy Community.
8th April 2019
One of the most vibrant and enthusiastic activity has been conducted on this day as Poster
Making Competition keeping Swachhata as the theme. Liasoning with ISST SATHI NGO
Kalyanpuri was done in-order to conduct this activity. Under the Guidance of Dr Nazish
Rasheed (Assistant Professor Department of Community Medicine LHMC) competition
started in seminar room of Urban Health Centre, 24 students of ISST SATHI NGO took part
in competition at 10:00 am. Students were very excited for the activity and expressed their
varied and vibrant ideas through their participation.
Among 24 posters 3 best posters were selected and students were awarded by Swachhata
kit as prize apart from this 3 students were given token of appreciation award.
The ceremony of felicitation was carried by Dr Nazish Rasheed and activity ended with a
healthy interaction among the students.
Apart from the above activity a Health Talk on Methods of Purification at Household level
was given by Intern Pratima to OPD atendees,which emphasised on need for pure drinking
water and explaination of methods such as chlorination of water by using chlorine tablets,
perchlorate solution, UV filters, RO filters bleaching powder. All the queries were addressed
accordingly for which patients were satisfied.
9th April 2019
Our further activities commemorated at the UHC Kalyanpuri included an inspiring and
enthusiastic dance performance done by the children of NGO (ISST Sathi Centre,
Kalyanpuri) (Poonam, Urvashi, Rinki, Preeti and Roshni) at around 10.00 am on the song
“Swachh Bharat Ka Irada Kar liya humne”. Another activity was skit performance on the
importance of cleanliness, open defecation, waste disposal and deforestation by 9 children
from the same NGO. The performances were witnessed by around 25 – 30 patients. This
activity was organized by Dr Ananya Ray Laskar, Dr Nazish Rasheed, Dr Richa Gautam, Dr
Aparna Jain, Dr Mrigesh, Dr Ankita, Dr Rodney and Interns posted at the centre.
This activity was followed by snacks distribution among children and their felicitation with
certificates of participation and hand sanitizers by Dr Ananya and Dr Nazish.
A health talk was also delivered on the same day by Arushi Prakash on “Daanto ki Uchit
Dekh bhaal”. The talk was witnessed by 15 – 20 patients and their attendants.
On 13 April 2019
Community Participation is the best method for encorporating behavior change keeping pace
with it our final activity was a peacefull rally headed by Dr Anita S Acharaya, Dr Nazish
Rasheed, Dr Ananya Ray conducted in Kalyanpuri area keeping Swachhata as theme.
About 40 representative of the community and NGO residents of Kalyanpuri, majority being
children: the future generation of country and the team of residents, interns and staff of
Department Community Medicine LHMC took part in it. During the march awarensess on
swachhata was emphasised through posters and slogans.The rally started from the UHC
Kalyanpuri and headed towards block 12 and thereafter to block 18 and ended back to
UHC Kalyanpuri.
During the rally colourful IEC material in the form of banners, slogans and posters were
displayed. The slogans were contributed by the interns as part of slogan making competition
(which was anounced prior to the start of Pakhwada) 4 best slogans were selected as
winners and were awarded certificates and gifts.
Keeping the hope of clean environment at last Swachhatha pakhwada celebration ended
with distribution of Soaps among the children who partcipated in rally as a token of sanitation
management.
