Key Features and Issues• Bus stop situated under underpass. Underpass
environment uninviting.• Route crosses slip roads from A629 and over
roundabout with Briggate with no pedestrian/cyclist crossing features making crossing difficult in places.
• Route dominated by vehicles with a footpath on the west side only.
• Southern end links to Southgate with prominent historic buildings demarking the entrance to the town centre.
• Vegetation lines a large portion of the route corridor.
Aims and Aspirations• Provide a clear footpath/cycle link from the
station site through to the south end of town by using features along the route to guide the user.
• Underpass environment to be improved through bespoke lighting or artwork.
• Safer crossing facilities.• Provision of cycle lane and pedestrian and tiger
crossings.

Juxtaposition of modern and historic bridges

Key Features and Issues• The route runs under the A629 underpass and along
Century Road with its has narrow footpaths with most of the parking on the footpaths.
• The route under the underpass is wide, as a former roadway, and tarmacked along its length with lighting columns.
• Graffiti is prevalent under the underpass and does not prove a pleasant environment for walking/cycling.
• Parking and overgrown vegetation along Century Road prevents any clear pedestrian route and walking routes can only be taken along the road.
• A section of the road at its north east end has bollards at both ends, resulting in an unused section of road accessible only by foot.
• Morrisons dominates the route on the south east side although historic factory units are still present on the south west end of the route, providing a key connection back to the town’s historic character.
Aims and aspirations• A key pedestrian/cycle access/egress route from
the station towards the town centre and beyond requiring upgrading through the use of appropriate street art and bespoke street furniture.
• Create a clear pedestrian route along the road by widening the paths and a more formal parking arrangement.
• The historic buildings on the route are key to its character and should be enhanced and utilised in the design of this route.
• The use of art work and bespoke lighting in the underpass to create a more pleasant and safe environment.
Key Features and Issues• Running from the station site north under the
railway and towards the business area. There is only vehicle access to the northern section of the route and bollards prevent vehicle access from Century Road.
• The River Calder runs adjacent to the route and the railway line spans the river on a stone arched bridge with architectural merit. The bridge is somewhat shadowed by the adjacent A629 flyover.
• Japanese Knotweed is prevalent along the banks of the river.
Aims and Aspirations• A key pedestrian/cycle access/egress route
from the station towards the business area. The general railway bridge environment requires upgrading to create a more pleasant environment. The use of art work and bespoke lighting would create a unique and pleasant environment at all hours of the day.
• The space would closely tie in with the access and egress from the station and a clear flow should be evident between the spaces.
• Overgrown vegetation should be cut back where required with regular maintenance and litter clearance.
• Create a feature gateway into the station site for pedestrian and cycle users.

Bespoke waymarking signs along the route add interest
Juxtaposition of modern and historic bridges over river
Lighting along route transforms the space at night to create a safer access routeOpen space between the railway and viaduct bridges
Key Features and Issues• A relatively wide road frequently trafficked by
HGVs due to the business use of the area.• Overgrown vegetation narrows footpaths in
places. • A number of ‘to let’ signs, unused notice board,
overflowing litter bins, litter in the verges and overgrown vegetation creates an unkempt feel to the route in places.
• The existing railway bridge runs over the road
with graffiti on each side.
Aims and Aspirations• This is a key entrance location to the station
and would benefit from general maintenance including litter removal, graffiti removal and vegetation pruning.
• The railway bridge crossing can be used as an opportunity to announce the arrival at the station through appropriate painting/signage/artwork to the bridge itself and under the bridge.
• Wayfinding signage to mark route to key residential areas, business and the town centre would originate from this location and could incorporate art work to create a linear feature leading in the corresponding directions.

Wide and quiet road
Overgrown Lowfields Business Park sign
Key Features and Issues• This route leads primarily to the existing and
future residential areas.• A footpath lines the wide road either side. • Mature trees are located along the route and
within grass verges.• New stone walling has been constructed
adjacent to original drystone walling which compliments the style.
Aims and Aspirations• The inclusion of a cycle path in this direction
should be mindful of retaining the existing trees along the route, which contribute to the character of the road.
• General wayfinding signage would help in orientation to the station.

Key Features and Issues• This section runs through the park, over the proposed
river crossing, along gasworks lane, along the towpath, and over the proposed canal crossing.
• Although adjacent to the river, due to the landform and bankside vegetation there is little connection between the park and the river.
• A pipeline crosses over the river at the proposed bridge location.
• Some properties along Gasworks Lane are now derelict and in a poor state of repair.
• The Calder Valley Greenway runs along Gasworks Lane and along the canal towpath, running adjacent to the derelict building.
• The canal towpath appears well used by both pedestrians and cyclists and leaves the canal at this point due to lack of space. It can be re-joined on the opposite side of the canal after crossing the bridge.
• The towpath passes under the A629 where the proposed bridge crossing is located. The underpass is a detractor from an otherwise pleasant route along the canal.
Aims and Aspirations• Should the river and canal bridges crossing be
implemented, this is a key route and the park requires an upgrade.
• The proposed footbridge could be used as a driver for regeneration within the park with features such as an amphitheatre incorporated into the design of the bridge.
• Consider if safe links to the river could be provided.• Any upgraded to Gasworks Lane and immediate
surrounds, including the implementation of the bridges, should consider that most of this area lies within Elland Conservation Area.
• Existing vandalised buildings on Gasworks Lane would require securing and tidying up until a future use for the site is secured to improve the overall character to the area.
• The route under the underpass could be improved through lighting and art features to improve the public realm environment and create a feature rather than a detractor.

Key Features and Issues• This route runs along Park Road and crosses
towards Exley Lane.• Where the route passes the A629 underpass
there is a large area of unused space, then a large area of scrub adjacent to the railway bridge.
• The railway bridge is narrow and low at this point, with no footpath on the eastern side under the bridge.
• Crossing the Road is difficult in busy traffic at the junction with Exley Lane.
• The western end of the route links to the existing access route to the canal towpath.
Aims and Aspirations• Wayfinding signage would be beneficial from
this point to connect to the station and connect through to the towpath link to West Vale.
• The environment under the A629 underpass could be improved through lighting and bespoke artwork.
• Pedestrian and cyclist crossing provisions would be beneficial.
