INTRODUCTION

MAIN ACTIVITIES

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR

Keeping these objectives in view, a multi-disciplinary Directorate - Urban Transport & High Speed (UTHS)

thhas been created on 18 Oct’2010. This is acting as a single window for technical clearance to Urban transport Indian Railways’ Vision 2020 document presented in the authorities and dealing with issues relating to High Parliament by the then Hon. Railway Minister aims at, Speed. In case some clarifications / clearances are besides several other major initiatives, raising the needed from other directorates within the RDSO, then speeds of passenger trains from the current 130 kmph UTHS is interacting with the concerned directorates.to 160-200 kmph on some routes and implementation of

at least four high-speed rail projects to provide High Speed train service at 250-350 kmph.

A number of High Speed corridors with speed potential of 250-350 kmph have been identified for feasibility UTHS directorate organised an International Seminar studies. It was therefore, essential that RDSO should on “High Speed Train Technologies” on 16th Sep 2011 in take action in advance to gain knowledge in the field of which representatives from Alstom, Siemens, high speed, so that necessary help and services can be Bombardier, Kawasaki, Nippon Signal and Pandrol rendered to field staff as and when needed. gave presentations on various High Speed Train

Technologies. The Seminar was Chaired by DG, RDSO Further, a large number of Metro Systems are being and was attended by CRS/Northern Circle, Director planned at different locations in our country. As per the IRITM, DRM LKO, DRM LJN besides the Sr. EDs and Metro Act, in case of urban transport, new technology will EDs and other officers of RDSO. The Seminar attracted need the safety clearances from Indian Railways. RDSO wide coverage in Electronic and Print media. being a technical advisor to Railway Board, is entrusted

with technical examination of the proposals received from various Urban Transport authorities to RDSO.

SEMI-HIGH SPEED FEASIBILITY STUDY

FEASIBILITY STUDY OF HIGH SPEED RAIL CORRIDOR

METRO CERTIFICATION

and certification work of Mumbai Metro One, and Rapid Metro Gurgaon is being carried out.

METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) of Japan, in association with Railway Industries in Japan, is carrying out a pre-feasibility study for raising the speed of passenger trains to 160-200 kmph on Mumbai

Six rail corridors have been identified for High Speed rail – Kota - New Delhi route. Preliminary survey of this route

services. The corridors are as:has been done by the Japanese team and they have

(i) Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar;given final pre-feasibility report to Railway Board. UTHS directorate has been involved in the pre-feasibility for (ii) Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad;semi-high speed.

(vi) Delhi-Agra-Lucknow-Varanasi-Patna

Feasibility study of these corridors is being carried out by consultants appointed by Railway Board. UTHS directorate is involved in these studies and the UTHS officers are attending meetings and giving technical inputs.

Manual for Safety Certification of Metros is being prepared. This Manual will provide guidance to Metro operators and will streamline the process of Metro Certification.

A report on “Basics of High Speed Rail Technology” is being prepared by the Directorate.

A report on “Basics of High Speed Rail Signalling” is being prepared by UTHS Directorate.

UTHS Directorate is actively associated with Semi High Speed Feasibility study and Feasibility study of the identified High Speed Rail Corridors.
