URBAN RIDES EINDHOVEN
HOW TO
BIKE LIKE
THE BEST
With more bicycles than human beings, the
Netherlands has it nailed when it comes to
the coolest, greenest form of transport in the
world. Here are some helpful observations
that should bring you up to speed.
See that sign that says FIETSPAD?
That means ‘cycle path’ and that’s where
you should stay if possible. Yep, Dutch is a
weird, weird language.
The LIGHTS are a bright idea to alert
car drivers to your presence on the road.
Don’t be shy, put them on and be seen.
Your bike is really, really pretty and
people may want to ‘borrow’ it without
asking your permission. Please LOCK it up
when you’re not using it.
You know when you stop dead in
a busy corridor and someone slams into the
back of you? That can happen with bikes,
too. Move off the cycle lane if you’re coming
to a HALT.
Dutch people love to demonstrate how
at home they are on their bikes by talking
on the PHONE, checking their emails or
just cycling without using their hands. You
probably shouldn’t try this.
Keep your tyre PRESSURE to four bar.
Then talk about it loudly in cafes. You’ll
sound like a pro.
For a comfortable ride, your SEAT
should be waist height (or just a bit lower)
when you’re standing next to your bike. You
can adjust it whith an Allen key. Nope, we
don’t know who Allen is either.
SMILE! You’re part of a global urban
commuting movement that’s going to
change everything.

BIKE STRAIGHT TO THE BEST BITS
VESTDIJKIs it beer o’clock yet? Head to the Stadsbrouwerij brewery on the Vestdijk Street for their award-winning Russian Imperial Shot brew and a round of beer tasting. Then move over to the in-house Café 100 Watts for a mean pulled pork burger.
TORENALLEERain or shine, you can always wander through the indoor food market of Vershal het Veem to sample some amazing tastes and flavours. After you’ve had your fill of food and drink, get your shopping on at Urban Shopper mall, home to specialty stores and the Can Art Gallery.
THE POOL Wind down or turn it up at our Mediterranean-inspired restaurant, The Pool. The big, quirky interior makes it a fun place to hang out with a large group for tapas, dinner or a round (or more) of classic cocktails with a modern spin.
FLYING PINS Cycle onto John F. Kennedylaan and check out The Flying Pins, one of Eindhoven’s coolest public art installations. This whimsical piece of art is silly-selfie approved!
DOCTOR
SCHAEPMANLAANEscape the hustle and bustle of the city at the Stadswandelpark. Pull up some grass, take a stroll along the Dommel River or go straight to stargazing at the Philips Observatory, which dates back to 1938!
KETELHUISPLEINNobody does happy hour like The Ketelhuis, located on the Ketelhuisplein square. Snack on bitterballen like a proper Dutchie, glam it up with some cocktails, then hop over to Pastryclub, located in the old Philip’s machine room, for decadent sweet treats.
BERENKUILGet inspired at this infamous
roundabout, used by local
graffiti artists as their
own murals. Every inch is
covered in artwork! It’s a bit
of a cycle, but you won’t be
disappointed.
KEIZERSGRACHTOn a street buzzing with bars, Van Moll’s stands out as a local crowd favorite, famous for its specialty brews (try the Bermuda!) Another popular hangout? Breakfast at Meneer de Boer, the perfect hangover cure.
LEIDINGSSTRAATTry the homemade carrot cake and very special Dutch Pieper beer at Onder de Leidingstraat. Then treat yourself to blow-your-mind ice cream at Intelligentia Ice, with flavors like salty caramel and chocolate chili. It’s the hidden gem of the Strijp S area!
KLEINE BERGFeeling fancy? But, like, an affordable kind of fancy? Enjoy a “gezellig” lunch or cheese platter at chic Welp restaurant on the Klein Berg Street. Then stop by De Minibar, a true cocktail haven, and let their mixologists whip up the perfect drink for you.
INSULINDELAANDid you work up an appetite after that haul? Then park it up and refuel at La Toscana Ijs Tongelre on the Insulindelaan. Cool down with Italian ice cream or recharge your battery with freshly brewed coffee, Italiano-style.
PHILIPS MUSEUMThis one is non-negotiable. When in Eindhoven, you have to visit the beloved Philips Museum on the Emmasingel Street and travel down memory lane to when the modern lightbulb was pioneered. Then check out the famous Blob building.
DOMMELSTRAATParty time! The Effenaar offers a mix of live music and events and a super cool restaurant downstairs. Being only a stone’s throw from the hotel, you can easily party into the wee hours!
TONGELRESESTRAATHead back to the city along the scenic route! This boutique-and-café-lined street is charming on its own, but the historical car collection (dating back from the 1930s!) at the DAF Museum is the big draw.
PARADIJSLAANEnjoy the best of all worlds with art, design and seriously good food at Kazerne on the Paradijslaan (which translates, appropriately, to Paradise Lane). Exhibitions change throughout the year, so you’ll definitely want to come back for more.
