1

BAAQMDToday’s training will demonstrate how to generate project emissions using the URBEMIS and BGM models.

2

BAAQMD

The results from the URBEMIS model allow you to estimate criteria pollutant emissions for construction, area sources, and operational (traffic).

Construction, Area Source, and Operational (traffic) E i iEmissions

3

BAAQMD

What URBEMIS can and can’t do.

•Land Use Projects•Construction Only•General/Specific Plans (w/caution)

•Stationary Sources•Transportation Projects•Boats, Planes, Trains•Thorough GHG Analysis

4

BAAQMD

The combined results from the URBEMIS model and the BGM calculator produces a complete GHG inventory for CEQA land use projects in the Bay Area AQMD district.

Learning how to enter data and obtain results from URBEMIS is the first component of your air quality and climate change analysis.

Where to get it: b i /

When should you use it:CEQA Projects www.urbemis.com/

CEQA ProjectsNEPAGeneral ConformityProject Emission InventoriesIndirect Source Rule

What it provides:What it provides:Emissions estimated separately for Construction, Area Source and Operation (lb/Day and tons/year) for ROG, NOx, CO, SOx, PM10 and PM2.5 (exhaust & dust), CO2 7

BAAQMD

Before you start URBEMIS you need to collect the following information about your project.

• Land uses that make up your project • Size of your land uses in residential units, sq ft, acres, etc.• Planned construction phases and timing• Traffic data (e.g. trip generation rates, trip length, vehicle miles traveled)traveled)• Project buildout (target) year

9

BAAQMD

The URBEMIS software has 4 sections, called “panes”. Each pane has a specific purpose.

10

BAAQMD

This short video will demonstrate several features of the navigation pane.

11

BAAQMD

We are going to describe the 7 basic steps for creating a land use project and obtaining URBEMIS results. Then we’ll have you create a project on your computers.

The project file is a text file that holds all data for an URBEMIS project and can be shared with other entities.

13

BAAQMD

The land use data you collected will be the first information entered into URBEMIS.

There are default values in the model for construction phases. We recommend that you modify these values to reflect your project.

• Demolition• Mass Site Grading

Fi Sit G di• Fine Site Grading• Trenching• Building Construction• Asphalt• Architectural Coatings

15

BAAQMD

The data you can enter for each construction phase is phase type, phase start and end dates, # of working days in a week and a description.

316

BAAQMDThere are settings for natural gas usage, hearth percentages and usage, landscape equipment, consumer products and architectural coating in the Area Source portion of Urbemis.

17

BAAQMDFor many projects criteria pollutant and CO2e emissions from transportation will be the largest emission category. Therefore, it is important to set the correct buildout (target) year in the operational section of URBEMIS.

18

BAAQMDThere are mitigation measured for each emission section – Construction, Area Sources, and Operational (Vehicles). Most mitigation measures specific to CO2e are set in the BGM Calculator.

19

BAAQMDTo calculate results click the cloud in the Assistant Pane. The cloud appears whenever data has been entered or modified. The results can be exported into Excel or PDF.

20

BAAQMDSelect Step 7 the save and close the project file.

•50 Single Family Residential Units on 10 Acres i M i Cin Marin County•Turn off construction emissions•Project description: Tholen Acres Phase 1•Save the project as _Example1•Run the project to generate emissions.

22

BAAQMDClick the BGM Greenhouse Gas Calculator Icon to Initiate the Software

23

BAAQMDThe Help tab in BGM provides tips for using the calculator and links to each of the other tabs.

24

BAAQMD

25

BAAQMDThe Settings tab is the location where you open and link to your URBEMIS project file.

You might need to use occasionally

26

1

BAAQMDUse SaveAs to save your BGM spreadsheet. The spreadsheet you open by double clicking your desktop icon is a “template” and should not be overwritten.

27

BAAQMDThe data in the Transportation tab is automatically entered and calculated from your URBEMIS project file. There are no data entry items in this tab.

28

BAAQMDAs with the Transportation tab, the Area Source data is automatically entered and calculated from your URBEMIS project file. There are no data entry items in this tab.

29

BAAQMDThe correct climate zone for your project must be specified on the Electricity and Natural Gas tab. It is also possible to override numerous usage values if you have data specific to your project.

30

BAAQMDUsing the data from your URBEMIS project file, Water and Wastewater values are calculated. Data entry cells colored in peach allow you to override the default values. Also, if you have a “blank” land use, there are cells on the right of the page where data for these projects must be entereddata for these projects must be entered.

31

BAAQMDTo calculate Solid Waste emissions, select the type of Landfill disposal, and enter any “blank” land use data, if applicable.

32

BAAQMDAgricultural CO2e emissions are based on the number of each type of animal. In addition, enter the gallons/year of the fuel used for Agricultural Equipment.

33

BAAQMDIf there are Off-Road Equipment used in the operation of your project, enter the fuel usage in total gallons per year.

34

BAAQMDOn the Refrigerants tab enter the Refrigerant Charge, in pounds, for both refrigeration systems and AC systems.

35

BAAQMDTo select a mitigation category, check the box to the left of the mitigation option and also enter the appropriate usage or reduction amount in the right hand boxes.

1 2

36

BAAQMDThe calculations for Carbon Sequestration depend on the number of hardwood and conifer trees planted in each of fast, medium and slow growth categories.

37

BAAQMDThe Summary tab does not require any user input. The values from the other tabs automatically transfer to this form.
