On May 1st Inco's copper refineryfirst aid team completed a sweep ofmajor first aid competitions by winningthe Provincial Senior Mens OpenTrophy and the Earl C. MorganTrophy as the best overall team at theprestigious St. John Ambulance OpenProvincial First Aid Competition inToronto.

After winning the Parker Shield thecopper refinery crew advanced to theMcCrea Cup competition to face the

best first aid teams from the Ontariomining industry. Once again thecopper refinery proved to be thecream of the crop and won this eventsponsored by the Mines AccidentPrevention Association of Ontario.

The victory qualified the copperrefinery for the St. John AmbulanceOpen in which 46 teams fromthroughout the province representingvarious industries, the military and St.John Ambulance brigades competed.

Teams were judged on their ability tosolve two first aid problems.

This marks the second time that ateam from Inco has won the St. JohnOpen title. A team from Levackaccomplished the feat in 1976.

A tale ofIn Chelmsford

Completing 25 to 30 kilometres aday is routine to runner RollyPortelance, a stope leader at Levackmine, Now, running 100 kilometres ontesty terrain is a challenge Rollyrel shes.

On April 3 he confronted thatchallenge and conquered it in theToronto 100, a 100 kilometre (62.14mile) ultramarathon race through thecity in what were very unfavorableconditions. Rolly placed a supersecond in the race with a time of ninehours 50 minutes, 10 seconds. Nineultramarathoners competed in theevent.

After training for three months,running 120 miles a week, I wasanxious to test myself out, to see if Icould do it," Rolly says. 'It was agood challenge. I enjoyed it althoughit was raining, cold and windy. I

wasn't concerned about my time, justvery happy and excited about the factthat I did complete the race. Everyrace is a different experience and Ilearn from each one."

Rolly didn't let the adverseconditions deter him from reaching thefinish line. While you're running youhave to tell yourself that the weather isnot only against me, but it's againsteverybody competing in the race," hesays. When my hands got cold, Ididn't let it get me down because Iknew I wasn't alone, that the otherrunners were experiencing pain asmuch as I was."

Rolly found the first third of themarathon easy because of theintensive training he went through forthe race. In the second third of therace Rolly slowed his pace to maintainhis stamina.

The last third was really tough"the runner continues. "I told myself Ihad put in two-thirds of the race, I hadgone this far and there was no way Iwas going to quit now. I kept thinkingof the cold drink and nice showerwaiting for me at the end of the race.I knew everything would be betterthen."

Rolly is a veteran of some 12marathons held in Canada and theUnited States. According to theAmerican magazine Ultra Running',Rolly ranked 150th in North Americalast year for the 50 mile marathon. Histime was clocked at six hours, 33minutes and four seconds. Rolly isnow considering the prestigousBoston Marathon as his next majorchallenge.

Rolly has been competing inmarathons for the past five years.Originally he played hockey andweightlifted to stay fit. Later he tookup jogging to keep fit for hockey.When I started jogging, I enjoyed it

so much that I left hockey entirely. Atleast now when I go to work I don'tfeel sore and tired."

Rolly classifies himself as arecreational runner", covering

hundreds of miles of roadway andpath in the heat and cold because'it's fun and good for my health. Andthen of course, there's always the nextrace."

What is next for Rolly the runner?The possibilities are endless,' he

says. 'There are no limits to what youcai do. I'd like to compete in moreunusual types of ultramarathons suchas races across Death Valley inCalifornia or races up the GrandCanyon.

'I have a liftime to run,' he says ashe laces up his runners.

Wayne Rae has been running sincehis days on the track team at PortColborne High School. He has alwaystried to keep himself in good conditionand about five years ago, he entereda 10 mile run. "It was during that racethat I realized how poorly conditionedI really was, as much older men andladies ran by me, like I was standingstill," he recalled. The race left himfeeling terrible - both physically andmentally and it was shortly after, thathe decided to make a greater effort tobe more competitive.

Shortly after his first experience atlonger distances, Wayne and thehusband of a former classmate, whowas also interested in long distancerunning, began running together. Helearned that his new found runningpartner was training to run in theSkylon Marathon. Wayne decided thathe would also enter the 26.2 milerace. In October 1979, Wayne ran hisfirst Marathon and finished in 3 hours21 minutes. "If I would have realizedwhat was involved in running thatdistance, I could have paced myselfmuch faster and could have finishedwith a much better time," he recalled.After finishing his first marathon andhaving the feeling that he could havedone much better, he decided that hewould try to qualify for the BostonMarathon.

Wayne ran eight marathon racesfrom Ottawa to Kutztown,Pennsylvania and his weight droppedfrom 165 to 140 pounds. Finally, inOctober 1981 he ran the SkylonMarathon again and finished in a timeof 2 hours 48 minutes qualifying himfor the Boston Marathon. Runnersmust be able to run the 26.2 miledistance in less than 2 hours 50minutes before they are allowed toenter the famous Boston run.

Wayne started the paperwork thatwas needed to apply to run at Bostonin January. In February he began

trying to run as much as 70 miles perweek from his normal 35 to 40 miles."Diet is very important and I had noproblem because I had already settledvery good basic eating habits. My dietis slightly different than normal in thatit has a lot more carbohydrates andfewer proteins. My biggest problemwas the weather. We had a very coldand snowy winter and it was difficultto put in 60 to 70 miles every week. Iwas not satisfied with my conditioning,"he said.

The race was on Monday, April 19and Wayne arrived in Boston theFriday before. Friday and Saturdaywere spent seeing the sights in theBoston area, and Sunday he took in asports expo and seminars on nutrition,sports, injuries and exercise. "Using alittle hindsight," Wayne stated, "I cansee now that I tried to do too muchthe two days before the run. I walkedto see many of the points of interestand the seafood was not on my diet".

The race started in a small towncalled Hopkinton at exactly noon.There were 7,623 registered runnersand about 3,000 "bandits" running therace. Wayne started about a quarterof a mile from the starting line and ittook him nearly a minute and a half toreach it after the race started. "Thetemperature was 70°F, much warmerthan I was used to and I knew I wasgoing to have problems. The wholecourse was hilly and lined with peoplegiving you encouragement. It did nottake long for me to realize that it wasthe toughest marathon that I had everbeen in. The heat, the number ofrunners and the hills caused me touse all of the energy I had just tofinish the race. Nearly 600 runnerswere treated for dehydration. The areaaround the finish line looked like a

combat zone with many of the runnersdropping as they crossed the line."

Wayne was disappointed with hisshowing at first, but reflecting backand considering everything, he figureshe did not do too badly. "The BostonMarathon caters to world classrunners and the average runner doesnot have much of a chance to achieveeven a personal best time,' he said.

It was a once in a lifetime experiencefor me and I was especially happy tosee the support given by the City ofBoston.

Wayne figures that he will probablynot return to compete in the BostonMarathon unless he can get his timeto under 2 hours 40 minutes. He isnot going to stop trying, but he cansee that it will be very difficultconsidering the amount of time he hasto spend on training.

In the minds of the unfamiliar, thename stirs the imagination andsubsequently, arouses a curiosityabout the facility: what is it? andwhat goes on within its confines?

Established in 1972 near the CopperCliff concentrator, the mineral dressingtest centre is essentially a mini mill,containing a fully equipped lab andpilot plant facilities.

The centres equipment is similar tothat found in a full scale plant but inminiature form. It includes all thefacilities necessary to perform thefollowing: ore receiving, crushing andstorage, grinding and classification,magnetic separation, flotation andproduct handling. Plant services alsoinclude a computer terminal linked toa central computer with various millingprograms available.

The centre is designed to assistInco process technology personnel inthe search for more efficient andeconomical processes to physicallyseparate minerals from ore.

The search for new improvementsin metal recovery is an ongoingprocess, says Andy Kerr, sectionleader at the mineral dressing testcentre. And the test centre is makingthe search that much easier.

separation of minerals from ore byflotation or magnetic separationmethods.

It is there that ideas for mineraldressing processes are carefullyexamined. Specific ideas areadapted for testing. The testingperiod is scheduled (usually sixweeks) and the ideas are translatedinto a flow sheet which indicates thesequence of operations that will beemployed.

'A plan is also developed definingthe strategy to be used, what reagentsare to be evaluated and theinformation that has to be generatedfor subsequent analysis," Andyexplains.

Once the equipment is set up, thecampaign begins to roll. During thistime, flow measurements are madeand samples are collected forchemical analysis.

Analyses are made more frequentlyas the campaign progresses. Resultsfrom the analyses are recorded andevaluated.

An overall, final evaluation is madealong with recommendations toimplement or reject the project ormake additional changes to thecampaign to improve the quality ofmetal recovery or reduce costs evenfurther.

"Every bit of information that isgenerated from each campaign isconsidered very useful," Andy adds."It is all recorded and is used in theevaluation of the data."

"Our aim is to try to optimize theprocess as much as possible," thesection leader continued. "We striveto establish the best flow sheet underthe best possible conditions and inturn the most effective process interms of cost-savings and metalsrecovery."

The last few years bear witness to anumber of successful test campaigns.These include; the study of millingcharacteristics of Sudbury ores,the evaluation of novel copper-nickel separation technology, thetesting of Thompson ore and, morerecently, the pyrrhotite rejectionproject for the Copper Cliff mill.

Debs ringette team, Andy Mihaichukwas the coach, the easy-going manwho kept it all organized and who hadhigh hopes for them "a real niceguy."

When Andy succumbed to a heartattack in January the suddenness ofhis death shocked family and friends.

No one felt a greater sense of lossthan the squad of 18 and 19 year oldringette players, some of whom hehad coached for two or three seasons.

Never a great athlete in his ownright, Andy turned to coaching avariety of kids' sports, baseball,football and hockey 14 years ago. He

turned to ringette SIX years ago whenhockey parents became more of aharassment than a help.

Hockey's loss became ringette'sgain as Andy poured himself into thevery considerable job of molding ateam of girls into champions. The1981 -82 edition of the Debs squad, hesensed early on in the campaign, hadthe potential to go all the way. "LastDecember the team took the SudburyInvitational Tournament," recalls hiswidow Precious. "All during Christmashe had a gut feeling that these girlswere going to take the provincials."

The girls knew they had more than

a coach. Andy, they found, actuallyenjoyed his work with them. A senseof commitment made him go out ofhis way for his girls. Labouring intothe wee hours of the morning hemade them their sticks, each paintedand bearing a player's number. Onegirl who could not get sweat pants,remembers Andy dipping into his ownpocket to buy her the necessary item.

Andy's dream was not lost in death.It became the collective dream of 15talented ringette players. In the pre-game huddle before each game,"Let's do it for Andy" were the lastwords said.

On an emotion-filled evening in anOttawa arena in March, the MacIsaacDebs played in the provincial titlematch against a superb team fromWaterloo. With little over a minute leftin the game the issue remaineddeadlocked at three. The Sudburiansdug deep and scored and then hungon to win.

As they celebrated wildly and tearsof joy streamed down faces, the girlsknew they had done it . . . for him.And from somewhere, they werecertain, he looked down, drew adeep, satisfied puff on his pipe and areal nice guy smiled.

The 13th Annual Sudbury RegionalScience Fair was held in early April atCambrian College with over 100 areastudents from grades 7 to 13presenting exhibits in the life sciences,physical sciences and engineeringsciences categories.

The exhibits which were based onthe students' own scientific projectsand experiments were judged on theirscientific method, originality, skill,dramatic value and technicalexplanation.

Awards to winning exhibitorsincluded trips to the Canada WideScience Fair at York University inToronto. Inco made its annualcontribution of $500 to the science fairawards list.

It all began 80 years agoA giant step in the deve'opment of

The Canadian Copper Company, annco predecessor, began mining

nicke' and copper at the Copper CHffmine (the remains of which can beseen behind the poNce station inCopper CUff) in 1886, Two years aterthe first furnace of a sme'ter wasb'own in not far away. Wood, for heap

roasting ore, and coaL for generatingsteam power, were energy sourceswhich company officia's foresaw asbeing rep'aced by e'ectricity. Theeectroytic refining of nicke' andcopper was proving to be viable asthe century came to a c'ose. Thecountry's first successfu' commercahydroeectric project at Niagara FaUsin 1895 showed that e'ectricity cou'deffective'y be transmitted over ongdistances.

The company's first venture into thehydroeectric fie'd came n theautumn of 1897 with a proposeddeve'opment of the VermiUion Riverwhich unfortunate'y did not happen.The estabNshment of Huronian Powerrepresented a second, more soundapproach to the business ofdeve'oping a source of hydroe'ectricity. Montreal engineering firm of Ross andHolgate. Much of the work done onthe dam was performed by recentlyarrived Italian immigrants. The totalcost of the dam and the number oneplant with its two generating units (twomore were added later) of 2000 kweach was $681 089.

The se'ection of this site may havebeen more due to the abilities of twonorthern entrepreneurs, Joe and BiHErrington, than to any surveyorsinsights. The two brothers oftenhunted the Spanish River area withofficials of the Canadian CopperCompany. At the time they operated asaw mill at Turbine downstream fromthe site of High FaUs number one.They strong'y recommended the siteto their friends. After the investigationswere completed and the siteaccepted, the Errington brothers' miflwas in a perfect position to supply theumber that would be needed to buildthe facilities.

On November 30, 1905 the switchwas first thrown sending juice toCopper Cliff from the just completedHigh Falls number one. The first pieceof machinery that became operabledue to power from High FaUs was acrane. By 1917 it was followed byHigh Falls number two. Constructionof Big Eddy, half a mile up theSpanish from High Falls, was startedin 1918 and completed two yearslater. The Big Eddy plant was erectedin 1929.

Two other hydro-electric installations,Narn Falls on the Spanish andWabageshik on the Vermillion River,were part of the Lorne PowerCompany, a Mond Nickel Companysubsidiary. When Inco and Mondmerged in 1929, the two plantsbecame part of Huronian.

Today the bulk of the electricalenergy required by Incos Sudburyoperations is supplied by OntarioHydra. The Huronian system, now theresponsibility of central utilitiesdepartment, supplies an important 17per cent of the company's local powerneeds.

Every spring a young mans fancyturns to a few things, but right upthere beside gir's and basebaH issmefts. This spring proved no differentthan those of the recent past asthousands of peop'e invaded thebanks of ice co'd streams to nabbuckets fuH of the tasty ithe fish.

The nocturna ritua did not, assome may have your beieve, originatesomewhere in the dawn of historyat east not in this part of the countryit didn't. The smet is a species of fishnot native to the Great Lakes and thewaters flowing into them. They weredehberatey panted' in watersflowing into Lake Michigan eary thiscentury to provide food for samonpanted into the same waters.

Since then the number of smeftsand their range has grownconsderaby. During the thirties smetswere considered a nuisance becausethey hteray clogged the nets of GreatLakes fishermen who had to resort toboiing their ginets in huge vats toremove the fish.

Even today there are those who fearthe spread of the smelt nto new areasbecause they think there may besome link between the spread of thesmelt and the decrease in the numberof native, preferred fish.

Now the smelt, apart from a springnight of enjoyment for many,constitutes a commerdal fishery worthmillions of dollars every year in theGreat Lakes.

Every spring smelts migrate by theuntold thousands from the lakes (inNorthern Ontario it s Georgian Bayand Lake Huron) up nearby rivers,creeks and streams to spawn. Theannual trek does not take place untilthe temperature of water in the lakereaches 48 degrees Fahrenheit(8.9 C).

If ladies thought their mateswandered off into the wilds after dusksolely as an excuse to whoop it uparound a campfire, they may draw alittle comfort from the fact that, yesdear, smelts spawn mainly at night.During the day they generally dropback to the lake.

The females of the smelt specieshave their own worries. Depending ontheir size (anywhere from five to eightinches) they will be carrying anywherefrom 10,000 to 27,000 eggs. Once themale fertilizes the eggs, smelts may ormay not die.

Young smelts, only 5 millimetres inlength when born, float down to thelake where they feed on a widevariety of smaller creatures. They, onthe other hand, become food for laketrout, salmon, perch, pickerel and anumber of birds.

Known by biologists as Osmerusmordax, the smelt, or actually therainbow smelt, got its name because ithas its own peculiar odor ... notunlike the smell of freshly cutcucumbers.

Everyone's favorite way of cookingsmelt is to fry them up in a pan over afire just after they have been caught.One or two feeds, near'y anybody willtell you, and you've had your fill tillnext spring.

The Sudbury district has fourprovincial parks within its boundaries- all no more than 1 1/2 hours drivefrom the city. Each park is special nits own way and they are all openedfrom May 21 to October 3.

Fairbanks Provincial ParkFairbanks is 56 kilometres west of

Sudbury off of Hwy. 17. It is nestled inthe forests and lakes of the outer rimof the Sudbury basin. Abandonedmine sites from the 1800s are in thearea and a blast hole from a 1930mining venture can be seen along theWa-Shai-Go-Mog Trail. Wa-Shai-Ga-Mog is an Ojibway phrase for clearwater, the name the Indians gave thearea when they lived on Fairbanksshores until the 1 930s.

Another attraction in the park is theanchor from a steam-powered tugboatwhich once hauled the log boomsalong Fairbank Lake when lumberingprospered in the area. It wasdiscovered by some of the manyscuba divers who came to Fairbanksto share the crystal clear vaters withother swimmers, boaters and avidfishermen.

A unique natural feature ofFairbanks is a pocket of southerntrees, sugar maple and yellow birch,which is uncommon in the Sudburyvicinity. It is home to a variety ofwildlife and is alive throughout thesummer with many birds. The blaze ofcolor provided by these trees makes afall visit a!so well worthwhile.

Windy Lake Provincial ParkThis park is just a 40-minute drive

north of Sudbury on Highway 144. Aswith all the parks. its picnic and

camping facilities and excellentbeaches make it a fine place for aday-outing or an extended stay.Campers and day-users can enjoy avariety of recreational activitiesincluding swimming, hiking on theCedar Brook trail, fishing or golfing atthe nearby golf course. Thecampground has been relocated fromits former spot near the beach, freeingup the beach area for day use anddoubling the beach area.

At one time, the Ojibway madeWindy Lake their home and called itMakiping, or 'place of the bearpaw'.An ancient dugout canoe, over 150years old, has been found here, asymbol of Windy Lake's historic past.Rugged hifis and jagged rockoutcrops remind us also of how theglaciers formed this area, at the sametime creating the scenery that somany enjoy.

Killarney Provincial ParkWell known and well-used

throughout the summer is Sudburydistricts only wilderness park -Killarney, south of Sudbury oft of Hwy.69. It is only one of Ontario's threewderness parks and as such theemphasis is on a wildernessexperience with no mechanical meansof travel. Activities such as canoeing,hiking, snowshoeing and cross-countryskiing attract numerous campers andnaturalists to the park.

There are two Killarneys to choosefrom. For those who wish to enjoy atrue wilderness holiday, the parkinterior awaits for any season of theyear. However, for those who desire aless strenuous holiday, camping,swimming and interpretive activitiesare available at the George Lakecampground.

Halfway Lake Provincial ParkThe latest addition to Sudbury's list

of provincial parks is Halfway Lake. Itwas opened in 1975 and s a ittlemore than an hours drive north of

Sudbury on Highway 144. Manypeople enjoy the spacious secludedcampsites and the natural sand beachbut it has more to offer - thousandsof acres of unspoiled wilderness andyou don't have to be an expertoutdoorsman to experience it.

Families can hike together on wellcleared trails or canoe alongpicturesque lakes, where log driveswere once run. Trails range from theone-half-hour Mooseridge trail to the35 kilometre Hawk Ridge Interior Trailroute, with evening campsitesavailable along the way. Eveningprograms, campfire singalongs and

guided hikes which tell the story of thepark, make complete what HalfwayLake can offer visitors.

That in a nutshell is a briefdescription of all four provincial parksin the Sudbury area. They all offercamping and day-use facities withspecial low weekday and oft-seasonrates, but each one is also different inits own way. A day, a weekend or anextended stay at Fairbanks, WindyLake, Killarney or Halfway Lake is aninexpensive way to discover whatmakes each park unique whileenjoying all the great outdoors whichis right at your doorstep.

Crean Hill Days: mining byThis story appeared recently inInco's pensioners' magazine INTouch. We thought our Trianglereaders would enjoy it as well sowe are reprinting it here.

Crean Hill, among the earliestoperating mines in the Sudbury area,

nestles in a beautiful wooded sectionof the Ontario north country,approximately 45 kilometres west ofSudbury. During the mine's 76 yearsof operations, it has experiencedseveral ups and downs.

Discovered in 1885 by FrancisCrean, one of the district's earlyprominent prospectors, the mine was

named in honor of his wife.Operations began in 1906 in an openpit down to the 200 foot level andbeyond and then a shaft was sunkdown to the ninth level Ownedoriginally by the Anglo-American IronCompany, it later became part of theCanadian Copper Company andeventually International Nickel.

Some 70 years ago two youngEnglishmen came to join the manyItalian, Polish and Finnish minersworking at that mine. These two havevery fond memories of those times.

WaHy BlackweH and Jack Treasureboth started their long mining careersthere and to the best of ourknowledge, are the only two of fourliving Inco pensioners who workedCrean Hill in those early days.

This fact was brought to ourattention by another lnco pensioner,Roy Hancock, who has been doingsome research on the mine. Roy saysthere are two others still living, whoworked there; Carl Jalonen of BeaverLake and Jalmari Luoma of Huntsville.

It was in 1912 that Wally Blackwell,a young gaffer of some 20 summers,first came to work at Crean Hill, andtoday, as a remarkably young looking92 year old, has many fond andamusing memories of his six yearsspent at that location, isolated in thebush some 20 mileswest ofCreighton.

Jack Treasure, at a healthy 90 yearsof age, joined Wally at Crean Hill in1914. Together they made quite ateam and their reminiscences of thoseearly days are vivid and detailed.

A short time back, IN Touch spent amorning visiting with this great pair ofminers, and one could easily havespent the entire day enjoying themany tales they recalled of what theyboth described as the best half dozenyears of their lives.

"The mine was a good place towork and the community a greatplace to live, they both agreed.

There was one rather ruggeddisagreement between two of thegroups that required the Mounties tocome from Sudbury, va hand car onthe old Algoma Eastern Railway, tosettle the matter. They held court inthe boarding house, Wally related.And we all watched,

Old Cap Collins was in charge ofthe mine and he was one of thebest, both Jack and Wally agreed.He pretty well ran everything, but

nobody complained. He helpedpeople get along together and at theweekly dances in the Finn Hall hemade sure there were no wallflowers.

At one time there were more than100 homes in this neat littlecommunity that boasted no police andwhere everyone left their doorsunlocked. It was a close knitcommunity and everybody kneweveryone else; there were fewstrangers they said. In 1937, duringone of the mines down periods, mostof the houses were sold and eithermoved away or torn down.

Among the many amusing highlightsof those early days, Wally recalled thatthere actually was a shotgun wedding.The father of the bride-to-be was

waiting at the shaft with a shotgunand when his daughters intendedappeared on surface, father marchedhim over to a boxcar where he had apriest waiting and the knot was tied,Wally related with a chuckle.

Jack Treasure came to Canadafrom England in 1910 and Wally cameover in 1912. They met while stayingat the same boarding house inToronto, Wally said. When a friend hehad met on the boat went north andwrote back that jobs were available atCrean Hill, Wally began hs miningcareer in 1912 with Jack followng inearly 1914. "I had a job n Torontobefore that, Jack said,

of the carbide lamp. There weren'thard hats or safety boots in thosedays and most everything was doneby hand. The ore was mucked by

the shaft and dumped into the skip.'There was no cage in the shaft at

first so you climbed down to work andup again. And there was only oneshaft, no return air raise so she gotpretty smokey after a blast," one of

our friends recalled. The old pistontype drills were giving way to the newleyner drills and one unique feature atCrean Hill was the dry wall supportalong many of the drifts, made bymany Italians whose talent lay in stonework.

Shrinkage mining and open stopingwere the methods of the day and bothmen recalled that the late HaroldKeast would come out from Creightonto do whatever engineering wasrequired. Another well-known oldtimer,the late Pete Martel, was blacksmithforeman there. For a time, the greatFinn skier and runner, Eli Kiviaho, alsoworked there. Jack recalls that on twooccasions he met Francis Crean,whom, he said, was Ted Myhill'sfather-in-law.

At one time, Jack related,production at the mine wasn't up toschedule so J.C. Nicholls, then one ofthe top men with the CanadianCopper Company in Copper Cliff,came out to the mine, moved theregular two shift bosses to Creightonand put Jack and Wally in charge,one on each shift. "We worked welltogether,' Jack said. "And we soonhad production above schedule. Wewere paid $150 to $175 a month headded. Wally noted that the rate whenhe started was 25c/hr. for muckers

and 39t/hr. for drillers, 10 hours aday, six days a week. "We went toeight hours a day later on," he said.

Travel to Crean Hill was restricted torail, either the Algoma Eastern Railwayfrom Sudbury to Espanola, whichstopped at the mine, or by C.N.R. toVictoria Mine then a walk of severalmiles to Crean Hill. "There was somedrinking in town and maybe the oddstill," Wally said. "But it wasn't bad.Most of the boys saved up for a tripto Sudbury where Silver Foam beerwas 10 a quart. On the return tripthe train's passengers were usuallyloaded."

At the start of the first world war in1914, Crean Hill was down for a shorttime, so Jack and Wally went back toToronto to enlist. It was a futile effortfor several reasons; too manyvolunteers, no equipment, pooreyesight, so they came back to themine and worked there until it closeddown at the end of the war in 1918.

During the terrible flu epidemic in1918 which killed so many Canadians.they recalled that Dr. Boyce, wholooked after the 150 men and theirfamilies, only lost one patient, a mostremarkable record. "He was a greatdoctor and a good man,' they bothagreed. At another time the wholetown was quarantined because of anoutbreak of diptheria.

Hunting and fishing were goodaround Crean Hill and that was Jack'sfavorite sport, next to soccer. Over theyears he played and managed manytop ranked teams at Creighton, teamsthat included such familiar players asJack and Chappie Cullen, TomStarkey and Wally, to name only afew.

With Crean Hill shut down in 1918,Jack remained there for a time toclean up the mine while Wally went toFrood to clear away the barracks thatthe local regiment had used duringthe war. Both men ended upeventually at Creighton where theyworked until retirement.

Today they are numbered amongthe town of Lively's first and mostrespected citizens. Jack and his wifeenjoy gardening and their homegrounds are a showplace in thesummer. Wally has several hobbiesincluding the art of fish scale picturesand travel. This past winter he visitedFlorida, has been to California and theYukon and has also made severaltrips back home.

Jack and Wally are living tributes tothe thousands of men who helpedestablish the mining industry in theSudbury area. They are among themost respected men in their trade,anywhere in the world.

of time. To others it simply bleats outthe order to cut in or off the job.

Some love it. Some hate it. But fewpeople know much about the Inco airwhistle that signals certain hours ofthe day to employees in Copper Cliff.

The air whistle, or more correctly,

the air whistles (there are two of them)sit on a small tower perched on theroof of number one power station inthe smelter complex. One whistlenotes shift changes by issuing its verydistinctive howl at 7:30 a.m., 8 am.,12 noon, 4 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m.and 12 midnight.

The second whistle exclusivelysignals fire alarms originating in thesmelter area or in the town of CopperCliff.

little history of the sound with whichmany of us have grown up.

The origins of the whistle, as far ascan be determined, date back to theearly 1920s. Then located in thegeneral office which held the timeclocks the whistle, ordered men toand from work.

A wiper' or an engineer 4th classhad, for many years the responsibilityof sounding the whistle. Roy says thattime signals were received daily fromMontreal over the telephone giving thewper" the goahead.After stints at the general office and

number one first aid, the air whistlecame to rest at its present location.Though it can be controlled manuallyif need be, the whistle is nowactivated automatically by what usedto be a punch clock.

The fire whistle also can beoperated by hand in emergencies.Ordinarily the fire whistle code isprogrammed into a control panel atnumber one first aid. Disks, eachdictating a different code to thewhistle, are inserted by the plantprotection officer on duty.

A fire alarm at the Copper Cliff mill,for example, would be signaledthrough the whistle as four wails,followed by two wails. If the generaloffice was on fire the whistle wouldsound seven times and then, twomore times after a short pause.

Both whistles are powered by acompressor in the powerhouse. Whenthe whistles are triggeredelectronically, valves are releasedwhich shoot a blast of air through thewhistles causing that very familiarsound. As long as the compressorsare working then the whstIes arefunctional.

Since the whistles are rarely downand the compressors work almostcontinuously, we can expect to heartheir call for quite some time yet.

Since Incoacquired CIL's acid operationsin Copper Cliff last year, theneed to train additional acidloaders has arisen. RenamedSulphur Products, the acidloading function is now part ofthe transportation and trafficdepartments operations.

The sulphur productsemployees have been trainingthe transportation employeesbidding onto the loading jobon how to load different acidsinto tank cars. Their greatexperience and expertise inthis area have made themexcellent instructors andprovided a basis for writing atraining manual for acidloaders.

Inco's agriculturist TomPeters and lnco pensionerClare Young, a former memberof Inco's agriculturaldepartment, visited the BlezardValley farm where the graincleaning machine has beenoperating for many years. Thefarm is owned by ComeTrottier and his son Roger.

The visitors were interestedin seeing how the machine hasbeen performing since it waspurchased by a farmers' co-operative club in the valleyarea more than three decadesago, At the time theInternational Nickel Companydonated money to the club sothey could purchase themachine.

'The grain cleaning machineis still going strong," declaredTom Peters. The machine is

designed to remove weed the main grain supply. It was cleaned some 300 bushels ofseeds and lighter pieces from estimated that the machine grain this past spring.

The drill rig also contributesto improved workingconditions: it has no oil mistexhaust and operates at areduced noise level.

$1,710 Gerry Labre of the Copper Cliff nickel refinery took home the largest suggestion plan awardthis month after suggesting that plugged or dirty diffuser plates in the blow tank of thepneumatic transfer system be cleaned and reused. Originally dirty diffuser plates were replacedwith new ones. Savings in the cost of new plates and reductions in downtime due to a lack ofstock in the warehouse have been realized.

$435 Gilmour Schroeder of Levack mine solved the problem of Gransberg cars derailing in placeswhere the track might be uneven by proposing that plates be installed on the pedal plates ofthe cars. This gives the axle more play so that if the track is uneven, the wheels react as if theyhad independent suspension and will not ride above a low spot and derail. Material, labor anddowtime costs have been reduced.

$295 Coming up with a modification to the fixture of the cab end light on four ton battery locomotivesput Bob Neville of Frood mine onto the award list. His innovation allows the fixture to bewired directly across the full battery charge without using resistors to drop the battery voltage.Bulbs on these lights can now be changed by the operator without having to call upon an electrician. Savings have been made on labor and material costs.

$150 An additional $150 award was given to Patrick Trahan of Levack mine for his suggestion tomove sand from the screening plant and pump it directly to storage tanks bypassing thenumber three sump.

$150 Another employee at the Copper Cliff nickel refinery, Roger Landry, earned a suggestionplan cheque for a money saving idea that involved replacing the fire sleeves on the ladle gatehydraulic hose with flexible metal tubing. Not only is the metal tubing less expensive than thefire sleeve but it also better protects the hose from splashing matte.

$150 Reno Visentine and Ray Murray, also of the Copper Cliff nickel refinery, suggested that3/4 inch by 4 foot hose be used instead of 1 inch by 10 foot hose to save on material costs.

$150 Three employees, Derek Pomateer, Harold Ross and Ra'ph Busschaert split an award forrecommending that portable shields be fabricated for dump kettles at the I.O.R.P. to provide asafer method of operation.

¶muck to reach a slusher scraper thatwould not come down. Whileprodding with one scaling bar Gerryturned to get another bar, Just thenthe scraper let go and Gerry lost hisbalance. The scraper fell over 30 feetinto the bottom of a chute and Gerry

was anchored to a beanng timber. Itstoed hs fall three feet into thechute and helped him avoid serious
