Quickly learned we can’t go it alone. Just one dissenting voice and the momentum could be lost

or dead on arrival.

Page 25: URISA GIS-Pro: Digging Deeper, Digging In Numbers

Also, quickly learned that point to point affiliations can be

effective, but is not enough and there is much overhead in

managing multiple relationships.

Alberta ChapterCindy Post

• Losing local pool….Private industry wants outsourcing. Dollars going overseas. ***

• Hiring and cutbacks. Example of 200 applicants for job opening

• Data rigor. People want fast and cheap. Losing the details of benefits for spatial data.

Page 33: URISA GIS-Pro: Digging Deeper, Digging In Numbers

Page 48: URISA GIS-Pro: Digging Deeper, Digging In Numbers

Stan’s Comments

• Clear• Specific in purpose• Meeting real needs• Sustainable• Inexpensive

• Technical Obstacles• Data Quality• Laws and Regs• Competing Policy Obj• Public Commitment

Page 49: URISA GIS-Pro: Digging Deeper, Digging In Numbers

Examples at Lunch 20100930

• Federal grants to allow acquisition of tools• Resourcing of Tribal and Local Technology

Assistance – Education• Better engagement and resource matching of

training programs tied to URISA Chapter needs• Adoption of model policy for the sharing and

ownership of data

Page 50: URISA GIS-Pro: Digging Deeper, Digging In Numbers

Possible Next Steps

• Better definition of the problem - one page• Report on progress this week and invite

follow-up input from chapters• Identify the high priority issues and seek

additional dialogue about solutions• Craft AA statements for review• Adopt and control official source and progress• Issue Guidelines for implementation

Page 51: URISA GIS-Pro: Digging Deeper, Digging In Numbers

Sum

• AA can strengthen an organization, bring focus, and bring its community together around its highest priorities

• AA can be a vehicle for meaningful dialog with other organizations in joint alliances

• Start out simple and let it evolve• Using a scorecard or maturity model will help

identify priorities and justify individual activism.

Page 52: URISA GIS-Pro: Digging Deeper, Digging In Numbers

Sum

• Next steps are important.. won’t work without active participation by chapter leaders and chapter members.

• Suggestion to maintain chapter blogs that are transparent and remain available.

• AA needs to lead to actionable steps by members and leadership

• Indirect benefits can be realized for your program by participating in the AA process
