somewhat uncontrolled and extended further down than necessary, so that denn. & was

written on surface that had been scraped, hence the rough appearance of that passage. 16688 In the right (inner) margin van Vliet wrote “12”, under the horizontal stroke of &

does not resemble a normal deletion stroke; in fact, if Orrm had been dissatisfied with

the superscript r, he would have been more likely to erase it. 16692–97 These six verses are Orrm’s rendering of Jn 3.12, “Si terrena dixi vobis, et non

In the upper ‘compartment’ of the S van Vliet wrote “vs. 16”. lufede: first written lufed,

wrote a hyphen over the erasure and continued with fede on the next line. êgéodd.: first

written cri%., then c was incorporated in g, ri% was erased and odd written over the erasure. 16712–19 These six verses are Orrm’s rendering of Jn 3.16, “Sic enim Deus dilexit mundum,

left (inner) margin. 17355 As this edition retains more information from this folio than Holt (1878), verse numbers

begin to diverge here.

17360–63 The text of these four verses was written vertically in the left (inner) margin of fol.

109r, which helped it survive when large parts of the folio were torn out.

17639 Large & over two lines; no guide letter. 17649f. These two verses were first written All þurrh soþ lufe. & off hï- /sellf. & off hiss fade¥ baþe. ‘All by means of true love, both from Himself and from His Father as well’. The

problem with this version is that the preposition off has been made to govern a nominative

sellf rather then an oblique case sellfenn. In his attempt to rectify this, Orrm deleted All, added ink to the downstroke of the þ of þurrh to make it pass as a bold initial, deleted soþ,

erased the punctus and & after luf±, erased the punctus and & after sellf, and added enn. & ec. Þu¥h vertically in the right (outer) margin with a guiding line indicating the point of

insertion. This would have resulted in the edited text “Þurrh lufe off himm·sellfenn. & ec.

Þurrh off hiss faderr baþe.”. The resulting sequence of two prepositions, “Þurrh off”, is

clearly an error. This problem has been solved by emending the added “Þurrh” to

“Þ[att]”. To complicate the picture, a later hand has restored the erased “&” before “off

hiss faderr baþe.”; this restoration has been ignored in the edited text. 17657 Large & over two lines; no guide letter.
