Reflections from Fr. David What a week we have been through! More snow than was expected, days of dangerous freezing temperatures, slippery roads, closed schools and churches...and now, this weekend we are in the midst of a sudden and extreme thaw...time already to break out the shorts?!?! Today, so many people in our land will have their attention turned from the weather to the Super Bowl in Atlanta. Countless households will be filled with football fans as well as plenty of snacks and beverages. The last few years the Super Bowl games have been surprisingly good...let’s hope the trend continues! But this weekend at Notre Dame Parish, we turn to something of far greater significance than a mere championship football game! Today we start a Month of Prayer to seek to know God’s answer to these questions about Notre Dame Parish and its people and its life:
+ Who have you called us to be?
+ What do you want us to do?
Why are these questions important...and why ask them now? Have you ever gone through a time in your life when you have been busy with many, many things...and ended up, after everything was done, asking yourself, “What was the point of all of that?!?” Most of us are easily frustrated if we undertake tasks that seemingly are pointless. The same frustration can happen within the life of a parish! Catholicism is wrongly described by some as a religion that is all about ‘following the rules’. The Catholic faith has never, ever been about such a minimalistic, impersonal approach to our life in God...although some would mistakenly lead us to such a misapprehension! No...our life in God is best summarized by the Lord himself: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). So...Jesus himself lets us know that the key to understanding who we are and what we are to do is...love! We are to love God, our neighbor (which means everyone!) and ourself. But that love does not originate in us...it is sharing a gift that we receive from the Lord: I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
Jeremiah 31:3b There is a lot of confusion and concern about the Catholic
community...both from within and without. In the midst of this chaos, as I have both said and written in the past, this is a time for us to be clear about who we are and about our mission. But that clarity is not the product of our own thinking. Notre Dame Parish Family of Faith is filled with people with an immense range of amazing gifts, skills and abilities. As the pastor, I also have a lot of training, experience and skills to fulfill my responsibilities to you and to the Lord. But the truth is that neither you nor I are here at Notre Dame to do what we think should be done. We are people of faith and we need prayerfully to seek the Lord’s direction and that of Our Lady for their answers to the questions about who we are called to be and what we are called to do. We can trust and put our hope in the One who is our hope. We can rely on the friendship and wisdom of Our Blessed Mother, who is entrusted to us by the Lord. So, we will spend the next four weeks in a Month of Prayer as a parish...seeking to let go of our ideas, our agendas, our will...and ask the Lord to let us know what we are called to be and to do...God’s will be done!!
Each week for four weeks, beginning this weekend, we will distribute the resource for the prayer theme for the week. The Prayer Resource will also be available in the Bulletin and online.
One thing I have come to know very well about the people of Notre Dame Parish is just how much people love this family of faith and just how much the parish means to them. This Month of Prayer is an invitation to put that love and commitment into action...through prayer! You can pray at home, in the church, in the Adoration Chapel, at work, with your family...anywhere. The Church will hold a Holy Hour every Wednesday at 7:00 pm during the Month of Prayer so that people can gather together and pray together. But if you cannot make those times, no worries...just pray on your own and when you can! Please, please join in the Month of Prayer. It will not take too much time each week. The weekly Prayer Resource will lead you through the process...and do so effectively! On Tuesday, March 5 we will invite all those who have joined in the Month of Prayer to gather together to share with one another just what they have heard the Lord say in response to our prayer. Lord, love us and lead us as we seek to do your will! Help us to pray, help us to listen, help us to love & follow you.

Souper Bowl Collection
In 1990, a Super Bowl Sunday prayer inspired a group of young people to do something more than celebrate a football game. They created the Souper Bowl of Caring, mobilizing youth across the country to raise more than $100 million for people in need. We will be partying and enjoying good times on Souper Bowl Sunday. Let’s re-member our brothers and sisters who are hungry and homeless by donating a dollar each!
Our Notre Dame teens will be accepting donations after all the Masses this weekend, Feb 2/3. Funds collected will benefit the Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen in Joliet and our Notre Dame Youth Ministry outreach programs.
PLEASE BE GENEROUS AND THANK YOU FOR CARING!
Ministry to the Sick
Please know that due to privacy restrictions (via the HIPAA act), we don't know if you're sick until you tell us. Hospitals are not able to provide this information to us, as they had in the past. So we ask that you help us by telling us if a loved one has been hospitalized, so that we can visit with them if at all possible, and anoint them if they wish to have that Sacrament of Healing. If you are planning on a scheduled surgery which is for the benefit of your health, it is always good to receive the Anointing of the Sick, and even the Sacrament of Pen-ance (Confession). Many find it convenient to let the priest know that you need that when they come for Mass, then they can be anointed following Mass. If that is not possible, you can come in to the office some time before your surgery. Just give us a call and we will work with you to set that up.
Communion for the Sick, Homebound and/or Elderly
Do you know someone who is homebound and/or elderly and cannot attend Mass but would like to receive Communion at home? Please contact Deacon Herb Waldron at 630.601.1751 to arrange a visit.
Volunteers Needed at Westmont Manor
Every Sunday, 10—11:30 am
Residents of Westmont Manor, formerly called Manor Care) Assisted Living in Westmont are aided each Sunday to receive the source and summit of our faith, Holy Communion. Volunteers are needed each Sunday to bring and return wheelchair residents from their rooms to a temporary chapel for a Communion Service. Time commitment is about an hour and a half any Sunday you are available. If you are able to assist in this outreach ministry, please contact Ron Predovic, 630.323.2496.

The Annulment Process and Support Have you heard that an annulment takes years to process and costs thousands of dollars? Have you heard that someone with children or someone who had been mar-ried a long time cannot get an annulment? Have you heard that your ex-spouse must cooperate in the annul-ment process or that you have to know someone im-portant to get an annulment? Each of these statements is FALSE! In order to help give you correct information regarding the Church’s teaching on marriage and annul-ments just call or email. The annulment ministry is for Catholics or non-Catholics who have been previously married, are now divorced and seeking an annulment of a previous marriage. This healing process is confidential, private and not done to place blame in any way. There is no cost associated with this process. To learn more about the process and to receive accurate information, please call or email Dr. Doug Muir at the parish office 630.601.1764 or [email protected] to set up an appointment and get more information.

The core of our faith incorporates both the pain of the cross and the hope of the resurrection into daily living. Starting in February we will explore the passion and resurrec-tion narratives in particular as recorded in the Gos-pel of Luke. This should be a wonderful preparation for the Lenten season.

Day of Renewal for Men
Open to all men 18 years & older. Gentlemen, are you in need of a chance to connect with God? Perhaps wanting to learn more about the Faith? Or just need a break from the world? Our retreat will be filled with fellowship, food and faith building discussion led by men from the parish shar-ing their experience of God’s action in their own life and in their family’s life.
Our hope from this retreat is that men: Are Encouraged Are Inspired Are challenged and reassured in their faith Realize they are not alone Grow in Holiness Re-focus on the most import things in their lives Grow in virtue Bond as brothers in Christ
The day will begin with the 8am Mass in Church and last till around 8pm Saturday. Meals will be provided. The at-mosphere is casual.

Feeling a Bit Uneasy?
Do you have an uneasy feeling to do something but don’t know what it is? Do you hear a faint voice nudging you to do something you can’t put your finger on? If that uneasy feeling or persistent voice keeps coming back, it could be the Holy Spirit trying to tell you something. If so, pray and be open to God’s direction. For some of you, it may lead to a job God wants you to do. And for others, it may be a call to become a volunteer phone counselor for The Up-per Room Crisis Hotline.
We are a Catholic hotline providing counseling and refer-ral assistance to anyone struggling to find his or her way back to God or a more rational life. We help everyone regardless of their faith or background. For that reason, all our phone counselors have gone through extensive professional training to prepare them to handle every situ-ation.
Does this sound like you? If so, call Sr. Mary Frances Seeley at 815-341-9124, or email [email protected] with questions or to reserve your place in our next training session, which begins February 19th, 10-12pm. You can also check us out at catholichotline.org. Thank you and God Bless!
