STRATEGY: HOLISTIC DEFENSE
• Holistic Defense will be achieved through modular, open systems that incorporate advanced active and passive/reactive component technologies working in tandem
• The Modular Active Protection System (MAPS) Base Kit is the foundation for this capability
Acq Strategy Simplified View
Strategic Goals• Defeat emerging threats• Reduce armor/anti-armor
cycle-time• Improve System SWaP• Reduce Procurement Cost
11DISTRIBUTION A. See first page.
Technical Challenge
1. Current ground vehicle survivability & protection systems are discrete solutions that provide limited capability with undesirable Size, Weight, and Payload (SWaP) characteristics
2. Affordable lightweight passive/reactive component technologies that complement active systems are needed for integration into a holistic defense system
3. Multiple technology spirals are planned to feed PdMVehicle Protection System (VPS) tranches in FY22, 24, and 26
TECHNOLOGY FOCUS AREA: Passive/Reactive Defeat
Investment Strategy
Existing Contracts FY20• System Survivability Prototype Concepts: Mettle Ops LLC, $19.9M – Awarded design, analysis, and
fabrication of component technologies and subsystems.Opportunities for Partnership FY20• Potential CRADA/SBIR: Lightweight armor, interior occupant protection technology, fire
protection/AFES, passive SIGMAN
Lightweight Structures
Modular Armor
Energy Absorbing Flooring
Occupant Protection Devices
12DISTRIBUTION A. See first page.
Technical Challenge
1. Army ground combat vehicles are operating in highly complex environments with ever changing threats
2. Develop active and passive survivability & protection solutions in a layered approach to permit flexibility on the battle field and across ground platforms
3. Multiple technology spirals are planned to feed PdM Vehicle Protection System (VPS) tranches in FY22, 24, and 26
TECHNOLOGY FOCUS AREA: Active Protection Systems
Investment Strategy
Existing Contracts• 10 active CRADAs with defense industry collaborators – Research and development of MAPS validation testing
utilizing the MAPS Development Kit (FY18-FY20)• DCS Corporation – Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance for development and demonstration of active
survivability control technology and capability
Opportunities for Partnership FY20-FY21• Collaboration to establish new interoperability standards related to active survivability - CRADA• Verification of compliance to USG interoperability standard (MAF 2.0) – Test Service Agreements (TSA)• Hardware, software and specialty engineering for the development and sustainment of optimized control
systems, countermeasures and adaptive armor solutions – Primarily OTA Contract Actions
