The Chain of Rocks levee is located in Madison County, Ill., in the vicinity of Granite City and East St. Louis. The levee was authorized to a height equal to 54 feet on the St. Louis gage.

This levee is one segment of the Metro East Sanitary District Levee System.

The Federal levee did not perform satisfactorily during the fl ood of 1993. Sand boils developed along a large portion of the levee, indicative of signifi cant underseepage problems.

As of Fiscal Year 2013, the federal government has invested more

than $59 million in restoration and defi ciency corrections.

This project is scheduled to be complete in 2014.

To date, the federal project has already corrected most of the design defi ciencies. The completed work has greatly reduced risk to those living and working in the Metro East. The Chain of Rocks levee currently provides the greatest level of protection of all the levees in the Metro East.
