Spring nor’easter devastates region The Passaic River, N.J., basin appeared to receive the brunt of the flooding from the nor’easter. The New York region was poun ded w ith several inche s of rain over a four-day peri od as roaring r ivers over- fl ow e d th e ir banks in N ew J ersey. Gale force winds and roaring surf pounded the Ne w Y ork and New Jersey shorelines as record downpours tested the mettle of counties just north of New York City. What doesn’t usually make the ne w s is the Corps ’ f lood c ontrol pr oje c ts that did exactly what they were de- signed to do, saving millions of dollars i n pr opert y and p ublic resour ce s be ca use floodi ng di dn’ t happen w he re proje c ts we re in p lace. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers progr a ms a nd projec ts pre vente d millions of dollars in damages at locations in New York and New Jer- sey. Levees, channel improvements, flood walls, dam modifications and open space preservation all pl aye d a part i n easin g the e ff e ct of a s i gni fi ca nt r ain event. The Passaic River, N.J., basin appeared to receive the brunt of th e fl ooding fr om th e nor ’ea s ter. The Corps has implemented several flood damage re duction pr oje cts in t he basin, as agre e d to by th e S tate of N e w Jersey and l ocal governments. Projects include work at Molly Ann’s Brook, th e P omp ton Dam at Oakland and the Pas s aic R iv e r Earl y Warning S ystem. A l thou gh not a c omp rehe nsive s olu ti on, the s e measures are currently providing elevated levels of flood protection. Without these measures, flood-related dam- ag e s woul d be muc h grea ter than curr e ntl y reported. Overall, New York District flood damage re- du ction p rojec ts s aved $91.8 mi lli on in f iv e s tates. (Continued on page 4) Page 6
