Deaths from the MERS coronavirus have

surged in Saudi Arabia ahead of the hajj pilgrimage, with 19 fatalities recorded in a week, according to local health ministry statistics.

A total of 502 people have died in the kingdom since the virus first appeared in 2012, according to updated figures posted on the ministry’s website, including 19, all Saudis, since last Thursday.

The number of MERS infections has also surged to 1,171 cases, the website said.

A surge in infections forced health authorities to shut the emergency ward at a main hospital in Riyadh

last week, after at least 46 people, including medical staff, contracted the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

Saudi Arabia, preparing to host more than two million Muslims from all over the world next month for the annual hajj to the holy sites in Mecca and Medina, is the country worst hit by the coronavirus.

However, Bahrain was confirmed free of the coronavirus last week when Chief of Disease Control Section Public Health, Ministry of Health Dr Adel Al Sayed assured that more than 1,300 suspected cases for MERS-COV in the Kingdom were

tested negative. He also highlighted the Public health lab fully equipped to diagnose the disease.

MERS is considered a deadlier but less infectious cousin of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus that appeared in Asia in 2003 and killed hundreds of people, mostly in China.

Its symptoms can include fever, coughing and shortness of breath. MERS, which is believed to originate in camels, has no approved vaccines.

A person was killed last Sunday by his cousin

after they exchanged insult messages, according to police records.

The 28-year old was found lying in a pool of blood after he was allegedly bludgeoned

with a wheel nut wrench. His 27-year-old cousin was arrested in connection with the death, and it was discovered that the victim had hurled abuses at him for making false stories about a road accident involving his deceased wife.

The alleged assailant reportedly informed the victim

that his wife got involved in a serious road accident in Manama. But when the victim arrived at the scene, he discovered the accident wasn’t as he was told.

He went home and sent text messages to his cousin, insulting him for ‘exaggerating’ the incident.

The duo reportedly met later as they were living in the same area and attacked each other.

The attack turned fatal when the 27-year-old took out a wrench from his car and clubbed the victim on his head.

The alleged assailant

suffered mild injuries to his head in the fight.

He was ordered to be kept in police custody for seven days, pending investigations into the case.

Producers of a Ramadan T.V series could face a trial as

lawyers have filed a complaint against them.

The producers are accused of defaming the legal profession.

The 15-episode series that was aired on Bahrain T.V last Ramadan and had triggered outrage from the Bahrain Lawyers Association.

The association is now

spearheading the move to take the producers to court after actors in one of the episodes defamed the profession.

A Bahraini lawyer, Haytham Al Kooheji, told prosecutors that “Har w Bard” (Warm and Cold in English) series has vilified their profession.

He presented the episode to court in a memory stick.

He said what came in the episode goes beyond the freedom of expression

guaranteed by the Bahraini constitution. It’s worth noting that the 11th episode

of the series blamed lawyers for manipulating clients who seek legal advice.

LAWYER’S CLAIMS BASELESSAdvocate General hits out at allegations

DT News NetworkManama

Advocate General Haroon Al Zayani affirmed that

the statements – attributed to a lawyer and in which he cast doubts on the integrity of the investigation of a suspect – alleging the questioning was held in the absence of his lawyer clashed with the reality on the ground.

Commenting on the statements published by Al Wasat newspaper earlier this week, Al Zayani said they did not at all reflect the procedures taken against the

accused since his arrest and until his questioning, with the full knowledge of the Public Prosecution.

The allegations were an unjustified arbitrary opinion and a biased view that lacked knowledge about the course of investigations, he said.

“Even if that lawyer gave himself the right to assess the integrity of investigations for one reason or another, the Public Prosecution accepts criticism of its work only if it is levelled within the courses prescribed by the law and by those with a legal capacity in

the specific case. Pretensions by those who are not legally related to the case and are not knowledgeable about the reality are not taken into consideration and are not regarded,” he said.

The Advocate General added that the suspect

mentioned in the newspaper article had been arrested with the knowledge of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation on Aug 18, and remanded in custody for four days in accordance with the Law, until he was referred to the Public Prosecution where

he was questioned. During the detention, neither the lawyer nor anybody else took the trouble to visit the suspect to be informed about the circumstances and reasons for his arrest, nor did he or anyone else show any desire to attend the questioning session, the Advocate General said.

At the same time, the defendant did not take the initiative to name his lawyer, nor did he appoint or request a lawyer to attend the questioning session on Aug 23, Al Zayani added.

“On August 25, the lawyer to whom the statements were attributed submitted a request to attend the questioning, and that was two days after it took place. His request to be present during the session was approved by the Advocate General who affirmed that the Public Prosecution was committed to applying the law without distinction. The law stipulates that the defendant should name his lawyer at the court or during his detention. It also allows the lawyer to do the naming on his behalf,” said Advocate General.

“The assertion that the Constitution stipulates the presence of a lawyer as an absolute obligation to ensure the validity of procedures is not true”

Free medical services for your pets have always

been a boon in the Kingdom. However, animal-rights activists and pet owners were equally shocked to learn the recent closure of the public pet clinic in Budaiya.

In accordance to a recent decree, the Agriculture and Marine Resources Affairs rolled down the shutters of the public pet clinic on Aug 15.

Bahrain Strays’ Fathiya Al Bastaki expressed her shock in the news of it closing down and said there are many people who can’t afford spending money at the private clinics.

Another citizen got the bitter end of the deal when her kitten recently fell ill. Mariam Hussain recalled, “I used to take my cats to the veterinary clinic which recently closed down… their services were great.”

“I took my cats a couple of times and they were treated well and got recovered,” said the

distressed pet owner. “Last Sunday, my kitten was

severely ill. I was shocked when I reached there and found out that it got closed down,” added Hussain.

“I didn’t know where to take her! I heard that the private ones costs a lot… I couldn’t afford it. I ended up treating her myself with the medicines I had received from the government services earlier.”

However, it did not end well for the little cat. “My kitten died yesterday… I feel so bad because I couldn’t take her to that public clinic. I felt helpless. I am just 18 and I can’t afford private clinics,” said the distressed Hussain.

There were also pet owners who got a bad end of deal at the clinic. Aymen Al Khozai recalled his experience when he took his injured dog to the clinic.

“It wasn’t close to being a good clinic, but it was something at least,” said the critical Khozai.

“I knew the doctors there, they weren’t bad, they just didn’t have the funding they needed or the medication required to treat the

animals.”

“The medication they used was not for animals but for people,” he said. “I took my dog there once, when his leg was injured. They used

iodine on his leg without a bandage, iodine is extremely poisonous to dogs and it shouldn’t be used on pets,” he recalled the horror.

“I now take my dog to Dr. Nonie Coutts, which is really expensive. My yearly budget is only about BD300,” said the dog owner.

Another pet owner Malik Madene supported the closure. The clinic could not afford to stock annual vaccinations for Madene’s dog. “I completely agree with such decision of closing down the government clinic, since they failed to comply with the requirements for establishing a vet centre.” “Our society lacks the awareness and culture of

adopting and taking care of animals, since most of them tend to pet animals for utilitarian purposes only,” added Madene.

More and more pet owners, including Ghazi Al Shehabi who pets a cat, also pointed out that the clinic’s access to almost nil funding was among the major reasons for its decline.

“I think any vet closing down due to budget cuts is horrible. It must have started with cutbacks until they couldn’t even operate properly,” added Shehabi.

Quenching thirst initiative: Coca-Cola volunteers provide water to labourers

DT News NetworkManama

As part of thirst quenching initiative of the Coca-Cola

Bottling Company of Bahrain, volunteers have been providing water and drinks to labourers working under the scorching heat.

Over 7,500 cans of Fanta Citrus and 7,500 bottles of Arwa water were distributed around Bahrain in two months. Last week the teams covered areas in Hamad Town and Saar.

Managing Director Mohammed Akeel said, “This is truly a blessing to those toiling under the intense heat. I am sure those who have taken

part in this initiative will testify how this small gesture touched their hearts.”

A long time participant, Fatima Al Dagher, wrote, “I joined the thirst quenchers in 2009 and ever since, I have been involved in several volunteering projects. The value of volunteering should

never be underestimated. Today, my nephews and nieces are also part of this group. This alone inspires me to do more.”

Public Affairs Coordinator Duduzille Dube said, “We can only imagine what it is like, being out in the field for days, wearing an overall and hardhat. Even a drop of cold

water is welcomed with open palms. There certainly is more happiness in giving than in receiving.”

The activity will be held Fridays and Saturdays till the end of September. Volunteers

have to bring their own cars and the company would provide them with cool boxes containing beverages and water. Interested persons may write to [email protected] to take part in it.

‘That’s not Cricket’England regained the ‘Ashes’ this week, on 24 August,

after their fifth cricket test match against Australia, played at The Oval in London.

By winning this five-match ‘Ashes 2015’ series, 3-2, they got the trophy back from the touring Australians.

But, as I watched the news, somehow, my mind went back to the traditional over-a-century-old England-Australia cricket rivalry.

It had, actually, given rise to the very term ‘Ashes’ since 1882, when an English newspaper had written a mock obituary stating that English cricket had died, and that “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”!

My mind particularly went back to England’s role in Ashes 1932-1933 series. A series about which I had read much, and I had watched much. And I now thought it might worth a revisit by us.

Almost a century has passed since that controversial tour of Australia by English cricketers, but the 1932-1933 series, which had caused a huge diplomatic upheaval, will always be remembered for the revisions of the laws of Cricket it had soon evoked.

I remember watching ‘Bodyline’, a wonderfully-made BBC mini-series on television that showed the controversy surrounding the strategy of England’s Captain Douglas Jardine of having his bowlers use some completely ungentlemanly tactics to get the great batsman Don Bradman out.

Jardine’s attack was a revenge-seeking one because, earlier in 1930, England had lost the series to the touring Australians.

And the Australian Don Bradman, during that time, was riding high on the crest of his career.

In fact, Australia had, in 1930, won the five-Test series 2–1, with Don Bradman scoring 974 runs at a batting average of an astounding 139.14, an aggregate record that still stands, even today.

By 1932-33, Bradman’s average had hovered around 100, approximately twice that of all other world-class batsmen of that time. Then aged 24, Bradman clearly was not going to retire anytime soon.

Therefore, he became the prime target of the English bowlers.

Apparently, as soon as Jardine was named captain for the 1932–33 English tour of Australia, Jardine met up with his two fast bowlers Harold Larwood and Bill Voce at London’s Piccadilly Hotel to discuss a plan to combat Bradman’s extraordinary skills.

They knew that Bradman gets uncomfortable facing deliveries which bounced higher than usual at a faster pace, and that he would step back out of the line of the ball.

And thus was born a new form of bowling delivery called “Bodyline” created by them. The ball was bowled close to, or at, the batsman.

It was bowled towards the body of the batsman on the line of the leg stump, in the hope of creating leg-side deflections that could be caught by one of the several fielders in the quadrant of the field behind square leg.

The English wanted to reduce Bradman’s scoring, or get him out, but this dangerous bowling had actually led to a large number of serious injuries on the Australian team.

England won the series 3-1. But it made Australians bitter. And what followed was a huge protest that strained England-Australia relations. Soon cricket laws were revised and Bodyline bowling tactics were banned soon after the series.

An occasional short-pitched ball aimed at the batsman (called a bouncer) has never been illegal and is still in widespread use as a tactic.

But a direct bodyline delivery is just not cricket, which is, after all, a gentleman’s game.

Youth City 2030 came to a successful close

yesterday with about 1600 students attending its training programmes.

Hundreds of students took part in Bahrain’s largest summer camp which was launched last month. Experienced trainers taught various arts and sciences at the sixth edition of Youth City 2030. The camp was categorized into four sections namely Art, Science, Leadership and Media – with classes for painting, leadership, public relations, cooking, fashion designing, technology, writing, video production, photography and other subjects on offer. It was organized at Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Sanabis.

“We offered 3000 training opportunities, every student was allowed to register in more than two courses. There was a huge interest and we were able to meet the interest. We had professional trainers who contributed greatly in providing the perfect experience for the students. The volunteers at the venue also played a crucial

role in the success of the programme,” an organizer said.

Sharing a similar view, Youth City 2030 Media Committee Head Abdallah El Hamy said “I think every student who took part will take away something special from their experience at the camp. The camp provided a great learning experience with classes for various subjects. Youth City 2030 is unique in that respect, there are so many different subjects covered.”

“We even had elections which decided heads of each category. The elections experience helped the youngsters understand basics of democracy, leadership and persuasion. Prizes were also distributed to the outstanding students who won the various competitions which was held during the camp,” he added.

Marwa Buhaila, who volunteered to teach at the

camp said the response from the children was perfect. “I worked in a class where we taught students leadership qualities. The students were extremely cooperative and happy to learn. Some students were very

reserved at first but after we conducted some activities they started to express themselves. We could easily see the change in the students, after only a few days they already started being more open and expressive.”

CREDIMAX OFFERS STUDENTS A PIECE OF CORPORATE LIFE

Credimax provides training to introduce students into corporate world

Bahrain corporate earnings to jumpDT News NetworkManama

Corporate world has reasons to cheer as the Kingdom

is all poised to defy the odds and record good increase in profits in the second half of the year, according to a report by Kuwait-based investment-house Markaz.

Bahrain companies are expected to increase their profit by six per cent for the full year 2015 compared to 2014. This expected growth in profit is noteworthy, as it comes on the heels of a disappointing five pc decline in earnings in the first half of 2015, as reported by the investment firm.

However, the wider GCC region is not going to revive fast.

According to the report, the region’s corporate earnings will contract by 0.3 pc in full year 2015 led by Saudi with

an expected decline of 7.9 pc. This decline follows the sharp decrease of 7.2 pc in earnings posted by GCC corporate in the first half of this year.

‘Fall in oil prices, strengthening US dollar and company specific issues were responsible for the poor earnings in the first half of 2015. Earnings in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia contracted by 19 pc and 16 pc, respectively, (1H-15, YoY basis), while UAE, Bahrain and Oman also registered negative earnings growth of 2 pc, 5 pc and 7 pc, respectively,’ the investment house said in its report.

The report notes that GCC

Real Estate sector has achieved impressive performance in the first half of this year. It says ‘Real estate boom in major markets such as UAE (Dubai & Abu Dhabi), Qatar and introduction of mortgage lending reforms in Saudi Arabia have led to significant earnings growth of the sector’. The sector clocked 44.5 pc earnings jump in the period.

Telecom sector has been a major lag in the overall GCC earnings and Markaz report adds that the sector, the fourth largest in terms of net earnings, was affected by the reduction in ARPUs (Average Revenue per User), as well as company specific losses and thus continued its negative run from 2014, with overall profits declining by 35 pc.

of Merchant Sales & Services, Amira Ismail. During the event, 16 students aged 15 - 17 were given a tour of CrediMax’s different departments.

They were also given a brief detailing of the functions

of each department. The workshop also focused on basic job-hunting tips, do’s and don’ts during interviews in addition to other exercises to enhance the students’ skills.

Chief Executive Yousif Ali Mirza said, “Moving from the academic life to the working field is undeniably a daunting and challenging transition and by hosting such events, we aim to make our children familiar with demands of the job market. Hopefully, it would pave the way for a smoother transition between school, university and work,”

The workshop aimed at intro-ducing school students to the corporate world with focus on real-life situations faced at the

workplace

New Orleans

The vibrant sounds of brass bands and buskers echo through the streets of New Orleans ten

years after the birthplace of jazz was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

But while tourists may find themselves overwhelmed by choice, locals fear some of the Big Easy’s spirit of creativity and improvisation may have been lost to the floodwaters.

“There had been a long line of older musicians passing a culture on to younger musicians,” guitarist Jonathan Frelich told AFP.

“That got uprooted, and the way the city decided to invest in culture didn’t have much to do with the way that it had existed before.”

The loss of neighborhood clubs and an increased emphasis on tourism has shaped the opportunities for musicians and the types of music they play, he said.

“It became the mode of desperation, and the only game in town,” Frelich said.

More than 1,800 people were killed across the US Gulf Coast -- the vast majority in New Orleans -- and over a million people were displaced when the Category 5 hurricane struck on August 29, 2005. The financial toll topped $150 billion.

Katrina flooded 80 percent of New Orleans with water that rose as high as 20 feet (six meters) after the coastal city’s poorly built levee system burst from the pressure of a massive storm surge.

The city descended into chaos as increasingly desperate people with little food or clean water waited days for help to arrive. It was months before the Big Easy was habitable again and over 100,000 people still have not returned to their homes.

When the waters receded, the future looked bleak. City leaders embraced the efforts of the tourism industry to package local culture as a catalyst of the recovery.

- ‘Mixing it up’ -It worked. The economy is booming, a

whopping nine million tourists visited last year, and there are scores of new festivals and venues offering work to local musicians.

But the cost of living has risen sharply as the city still works to rebuild its decimated housing stock. Many musicians find themselves struggling to get by with the cost of renting or owning a home up 30 to 45 percent from pre-storm levels.

Plenty of performers find themselves working for tips in the street or even in some of the bars serving tourists. Those who manage to get regular paying gigs find that their work isn’t always valued.

“Some of the newer places aren’t as concerned with the quality of music because there’s so many people on the street, they’re going to get bodies

no matter what,” said Meschiya Lake, a popular jazz singer who performs regularly on the bustling Frenchmen Street.

In recent years, Frenchmen Street has transformed from the hipper alternative to Bourbon Street into a more tourist-friendly destination, where a well-lit outdoor market and a giant gourmet hot dog stand welcome visitors.

Once known for its diverse, experimental vibe, the strip is

now home to more cover bands and traditional jazz.

While the hotels and bars catering to tourists may be quite tame, musicians still have places to cut loose.

Many, though certainly not all, of the corner bars which helped make New Orleans an early hotbed of rhythm and blues, rock and funk have reopened. The social clubs that support the brass band led neighborhood parades known as “second lines” have also reformed.

“New Orleans music always sells, and musicians are skilled at meeting their audience’s expectations,” said Matt Sakakeeny, a musicologist at Tulane University who specializes in New Orleans brass bands.

“The system still rewards innovative musicians who know the formula and are mixing it up. I don’t see any signs that they are in danger.”

-- ‘Vibrancy, accidental magic’ --Musicians said that while tourism had a

homogenizing effect on the music, the city’s changing demographics pose another threat to its penchant for improvisation.

The black population has fallen by about 115,000 people, dropping from 68 percent of residents in 2000 to 60 percent in 2013, the latest census figures show.

Plenty of white residents also found the emotional and financial cost of rebuilding to be too high, though their numbers are harder to measure.

The post-Katrina influx of new residents included homeowners who were less inclined to join street parades, and more willing to call the authorities.

Recently proposed legislation to limit the volume of recorded and live music puzzled many locals accustomed to the late night blasts of trumpets.

“That’s part of the vibrancy, that accidental magic,” Lake told AFP. “It’s like going to France and telling them to stop speaking French.”

Tuba player Bennie Pete longs for pre-storm New Orleans.

“You always feel like you’re missing something,” he said.

“You’re driving through a neighborhood looking for a certain house, and it’s not there... the heart of it is what I’m looking for.”

That’s why it’s so important to make sure that the city’s unique culture and sound is protected, he said.

“We understand our position as musicians and culture bearers is to educate the younger ones so they can grab the torch,” he said. “Right now, we still have a lot more walking and torch carrying to do.”

A decade after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has made a successful comeback as the home of jazz with a boom in tourism.

A shamed army officer, Daniyal Khan (Saif) is living a life

of anonymity. Court-martialed because evidence points out that he was not with his team when the enemy attacked, he yearns to earn his stripes back. As it so happens, there is a covert intelligence group, who is seething that the Centre has not been able to avenge the 26/11 Mumbai carnage.

They know permissions from official quarters will not come. So, they just take it upon themselves to launch a `punish-those-terrorists’ movement. After all, like one young officer (Zeeshan Ayub) says, 10 audacious guys from across the border did bring Mumbai to her knees on that

fateful night in 2008, killing 166 people.

So Daniyal is despatched across continents to find the fanatic four who plotted 26/11. They even whisper to him that, he can `accidentally’ kill .

Based on the book, Mumbai Avengers by Hussain Zaidi, Kabir Khan, fresh from the super-success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, doesn’t extend a hand of friendship to the neighbouring country in this one. Instead, he is clear that if they house the Laskhar-e-Taiba or allow militants like Haris Saeed (the cinema-counterpart of Hafiz Saeed) then the blood-thirsty Indian will take revenge.

To add glamour, Daniyal

is accompanied by Nawaz Mistry (Katrina) who works on special assignments for Indian intelligence from London.

As the prologue says, the Taj Mahal Hotel at Apollo Bunder, blown up that fateful night has a new facade now. As cinema, this thriller is over-simplified, though the gloss adds to the large-screen appeal. Saif is adept; Kat is pretty appealing (pun on the pretty because her make-up is intact even in the battlefield). Zeeshan and his jingoism in the climax gives you that proud-India moment. And, if you’re still licking the wounds of that senseless Mumbai massacre, then Phantom is the balm you should reach out for.

Philippine massacre trial hearings16 Friday, August 28, 2015

Manila

Trial hearings of defendants’ accused of the massacre of

58 people in the Philippines will finish by the end of the year, the country’s chief justice vowed yesterday.

Prosecution and defence lawyers will finish presenting evidence by the end of 2015, after which the judge has 90 days to issue a verdict, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno told reporters.

“It is excruciatingly slow for the victims’ families. That is not debatable, it is painful, there must be closure,” Sereno said.

The trial involves members of the influential Ampatuan clan, which allegedly ordered the slaughter of 58 people, including 32 journalists, in the conflict-wracked province of Maguindanao in November 2009 in an attempt to crush a rival clan’s election challenge.

The brutal massacre, one of

the world’s deadliest attacks against media workers, saw some shot in their genitals before they were buried in a hilltop grave using an

excavator. The slow pace of the trial has angered the families of the victims and frustrated President Benigno Aquino, who has promised a

verdict before he steps down from office in mid-2016. Widows of victims spoke out last month after one of the principal accused, Andal Ampatuan Snr, died of liver cancer while under hospital guard.

Sereno said the court has resolved most of the bail petitions that caused much of the delays in the six-year long proceedings.

Two sons of Andal Ampatuan Snr, Andal Jnr and Zaldy, are among 100 people on trial for one of the world’s most shocking mass murders.

The Ampatuans ruled Maguindanao for over a decade under the patronage of then-president Gloria Arroyo, who had tolerated the clan’s private army as a buffer against Muslim separatist rebels.

Widow Merly Perante, whose journalist husband Ronnie was among those slain, said she was cheered by

Sereno’s announcement, but stressed that getting justice was still her priority.

Net migration to Britain has hit record levels, official

figures showed yesterday, with the difference between migrants leaving and arriving in Britain rising to around 329,000 in the year to March.

“The net migration figure was a statistically significant increase from 236,000 in year ending March 2014 and is the highest net migration on record,” the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire called the figures “deeply disappointing”.

Prime Minister David

Cameron had vowed to reduce the numbers to less than 100,000 by May of this year. Some 636,000 people immigrated to Britain over the 12-month period, a rise of 84,000, while 307,000 people emigrated, down 9,000.

The net figure is 9,000 more than the previous record, which was set in the year ending June 2005.

The report found that 269,000 EU citizens had moved to Britain permanently, a “statistically significant” increase of 56,000.

Around 53,000 were Romanian and Bulgarian citizens, almost double the 28,000 in the previous 12

months. Prime Minister Cameron has vowed to hold a referendum on Britain’s

membership of the European Union by 2017, and is hoping to wrest powers from Brussels,

particularly over immigration, before the vote.

Brokenshire called the figures a “wake-up call”.

“While these figures underline the challenges we need to meet to reduce net migration, they should also act as a further wake-up call for the EU. Current flows of people across Europe are on a scale we haven’t seen since the end of the Second World War,” he said.

“This is not sustainable and risks the future economic development of other EU member states. It reinforces the need for further reform at an EU level as well as within the UK.”

Smaller of newborn panda twins at US zoo diesWashington

One of the two giant panda twins born at

Washington’s Smithsonian National Zoo over the weekend died on Wednesday, turning unexpected joy to tragedy in a matter of days.

After an ultrasound revealed a possible pregnancy a week ago, zookeepers were greeted with another surprise on Saturday when 17-year-old panda Mei Xiang gave birth to not one, but two baby cubs.

But the keepers struggled to keep the smaller of the two healthy as Mei Xiang focused

her attention on the larger cub. The undersize cub - nearly half the weight of the other - passed away on Wednesday, four days after its unexpected birth had made it an Internet sensation.

“This is a very hard loss for us,” zoo director Dennis Kelly told a press conference.

“It’s really hard to keep those little creatures thriving.”

Zookeepers faced an uphill battle after they had trouble convincing Mei Xiang to swap between caring for the smaller and larger cub.

Tiny, blind, nearly hairless

and with little ability to regulate their own body temperature, newborn pandas are completely dependent on their mothers.

Keepers had stepped into that maternal role by bottle-feeding the cub and administering antibiotics to stave off infections, but their efforts ultimately fell short.

“After the last swap this morning, we immediately noticed that it appeared weaker, with possible respiratory problems,” chief veterinarian Don Neiffer said.

“We did see some

improvements... but things turned and its condition declined. We weren’t able to turn things.”

Prior to its death, the cub had stopped gaining weight and was only 79.8 grams (2.8 ounces) when it died, as opposed to the 137.7 grams of its larger sibling.

Neiffer noted that newborn cubs are extremely fragile and that the cause of death would not be known for sure until an autopsy is performed in the next few weeks.

But he also said the larger cub was doing very well.

“We have a very healthy panda. We remain very optimistic about the animal,”

Neiffer said. It is too early to determine the sex of either cub.

Arrest warrant issued for Pak ex-PM Karachi

A Pakistani anti-corruption court yesterday issued

arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as well as one of his senior ministers in a dozen graft cases against them.

The court ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which probed the cases, to apprehend Gilani, who was prime minister from 2008 to 2012, along with ex-commerce minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim and produce them before a judge on September 10.

“Yes, the court has issued the arrest warrants against them and to produce them into the court on the next hearing,” an FIA official said.

Gilani can appeal to a higher court to allow him to post bail to avoid arrest before the hearing, but Fahim is unlikely to appear because he is receiving cancer treatment in Britain.

‘Newborn dies after rat bites in Indian hospital’Tragic endNew Delhi

A newborn has died after being bitten by rats in

a government-run hospital in southern India where he was undergoing treatment, the baby’s mother alleged yesterday.

Three health officials have been suspended over the incident at the Guntur Government Hospital in Andhra Pradesh state where the 10-day-old boy was being treated for a urinary tract problem.

His mother, Chavali

Lakshmi, said she alerted staff after noticing some of her son’s fingers appeared to have been nibbled off during his stay in the neonatal intensive care unit.

“Our son was about to undergo a surgery, but we noticed wounds on his right hand on Wednesday,” she said.

“Rats had nibbled them (fingers) off,” Lakshmi added.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said he has suspended

three officials and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

“Shocked and deeply disturbed after learning that a baby boy died after bitten by rats in Guntur hospital,” Naidu said on Twitter.

“Warned officials that such an incident should not recur.”

The hospital’s top official, medical superintendent T. Venugopala Rao was quoted in the Times of India newspaper as saying the boy’s death occurred despite putting up rat mesh in the

neonatal intensive care unit after receiving complaints about rodents.

“It is an unfortunate incident,” he added.

Most of India’s 1.2 billion-strong population rely on under-staffed and run-down government hospitals for free treatment.

Last year, a hospital in the central state of Madhya Pradesh hired pest controllers after incidents of rodents damaging hospital equipment and biting patients.Three health officials have been suspended over the incident

Roanoke

An ex-TV journalist who shot dead two

ex-colleagues live on air in Virginia had been ordered to seek medical help by his bosses, memos reveal.

Internal memos from Dan Dennison, then news chief of WDBJ7, show concerns about Vester Flanagan’s “aggressive” behaviour towards colleagues.

They indicate the station tried to help him before firing him in February 2013.

Flanagan shot dead Alison Parker and Adam Ward at a shopping centre in Moneta on Wednesday.

He filmed the attack and posted it on social media. He sent a rambling manifesto to ABC News, saying he was a “human powder keg... just waiting to go BOOM!!!!”

Flanagan voiced a host of anger-laced grievances, as well as some praise, in a disjointed 23-page document that authorities say he faxed after shooting the two WDBJ-

TV journalists live on air - killings that he attempted to explain.

In one document that he called a “suicide note for friends and family,” Flanagan, wrote, “I am so sorry for dumping on you ... I am just so sick of this s*** man.”

Flanagan talked about his past, including his time growing up in Northern California and his claims to have worked as a teen model and later as a male escort in addition to his time in television news. He delved into his personal life, including his being a gay black man, offering praise for some relatives, friends and one romantic interest and condemnation for others. He admits to being “somewhat racist against whites, blacks and Latinos.”

He referenced a number of grievances, some of them decades old, and mentioned being bullied and suffering other injustices. Some of

these involve places where he worked, including WDBJ.

The document does not mention either of Wednesday’s victims by name, though it does detail his gripes with the Roanoke television station.

Flanagan expressed his admiration for Seung-Hui Cho, who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007. He also referenced the June shootings at a predominantly black African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, carried out by Dylann Roof. Roof claimed he wanted to start a “race war.”

Gun control debate

The brazen killing of two US journalists during a live television broadcast by a former reporter who was fired by the station reignited calls for tougher gun control in America - though hope for change is limited.

Parker’s father Andy made an impassioned plea for change, saying his daughter’s death had left his heart broken.

“I’m for the Second Amendment, but there has to be a way to force politicians that are cowards and in the pockets of the NRA to come to grips and make sense - have sensible laws so that crazy people can’t get guns,” he said.

“It can’t be that hard, and yet politicians from the local level to the state level to the national level, they side step the issue. They kick the can down the road. This can’t happen anymore.”

Bahrain’s Mimi Belete kept the Kingdom’s medal hopes

alive when she finished third in heat one in the women’s 5,000 metres qualifiers running 15 minutes 20.94 seconds yesterday at the 15th World Athletics Championships hosted by China at its National Stadium in Beijing.

Belete will compete in Sunday’s final after comfortably qualifying behind the heat one

winner from Ethiopia Genzebe Dibaba (15:20.82) and Kenya’s Mercy Cherono (15:20.94) who was classified second despite the Bahraini runner having the same time.

Also yesterday Benson Kipligat Seurei (3:45.70) bowed out in a heat one qualifier in the men’s 1,500 metres, with Elijah Manangoi (Kenya, 3:42.59), Taoufik Makhloufi (Algeria, 3:42.72) and Mathew Centrowitz (US, 3:43.17) finishing in the top three places to qualify for the

final. Tomorrow Bahrain’s Albert Kibichii Rop competes in the men’s 5,000 metres final which includes 5,000 and 10,000 metres double gold medallist Mohamed Farah of Great Britain and American Galen Rupp.

Bahrain concludes its participation on the final day of the championships on Sunday with Lishan Dula, Kareema Jasim, Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa and Aster Tesfaye all in the women’s marathon.

Bahrain’s other participants have been (men’s): Shumi Dechasa, Aadan Ismael Khamis, Ali Hassan Mahboob (marathon), Nelson Kipkosgei Cherutich, John Kibet Koech (3,000 metres steeplechase), Abraham Kupchirchir Rotich (800 metres), El Hassan Elabbassi (10,000 metres), Aweke Ayalew (10,000/5,000 metres) and Abbas Abubakar Abbas (400 metres),(women): Oluwakemi Adekoya (400 metres hurdles) and Ruth Jebet (3,000 metres steeplechase).

Belfast

Steven Smith’s first match as full-time Australia captain

ended with a rain-affected 23-run one-day international win over Ireland in Belfast yesterday, but it needed the speed of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc to put the hosts in their place.

A third-wicket partnership of 86 between Ed Joyce (44) and Niall O’Brien (45) put Ireland on course for their first ever victory over the world champions.

But after Glenn Maxwell ended the stand, the middle-lower order could not maintain the scoring rate against the express pace of Cummins and Starc, the world’s top-ranked ODI bowler.

Cummins (two for 19) actually broke the bat of Stuart Thompson, who had just hit off-spinner Maxwell for two sixes as Ireland, cricket’s leading non-Test nation, chased a revised target of 181 in 24 overs on a frustrating day of four rain interruptions.

Left-arm fast bowler Starc (two for 34) ended Thompson’s late rally to give one-day wicket-keeper Matthew Wade his third

catch of the innings. Nathan Coulter-Nile, with the final two wickets in the last over, ended as the most successful bowler and also the most economical (three for 13 in 4.4 overs) as Australia, in their first match in this format since beating New Zealand in the World Cup final in Melbourne in March, ultimately won with something

to spare.Australia, with Smith

leading the team for the first time following the retirement of Michael Clarke, had chosen to bat on what he described as a slow but good pitch and they made 222 for six before the second rain interruption ended their innings in the 41st over.

Opening stand Joe Burns, who made 69

on his ODI debut and David Warner, named man-of-the-match for his 84 from 80 balls with seven fours and three sixes, put on 139 for the first wicket. But Ireland hit back with six wickets for 85 runs to the delight of home fans at the Stormont ground. (AFP)

Djoker on Nadal collision course New York

World number one Novak Djokovic and 14-time

major champion Rafael Nadal are on a US Open quarter-final collision course following yesterday’s draw at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

And Britain’s Andy Murray, who opens against Australia’s tour bad boy Nick Kyrgios, might have to get past French Open winner Stan Wawrinka and 17-time major winner Roger Federer just to get a crack at Djokovic in the final on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts.

The paths will be filled with qualifiers ahead of Monday’s

start of the year’s final Grand Slam event in New York, where Djokovic’s only title came in 2011.

The 28-year-old Serbian star owns nine Grand Slam titles and seeks his third of the year after a third career win at Wimbledon and a fifth trophy at the Australian Open.

Djokovic has tasted defeat four times in the US Open final, losing to Federer in 2007, Nadal in 2010 and 2013 and Murray in 2012.

Nadal leads Djokovic 22-20 in their all-time rivalry, but Djokovic won their most recent meeting at the French Open quarter-finals.

Olympic champion Christian Taylor

produced the second longest triple jump in history yesterday as he won the world title with a huge leap of 18.21m.

The Dutch-based American left it late before nailing the big jump on his sixth and final attempt to add to the world championship gold he won in 2011.

Only Jonathan Edwards has jumped further, 18.29 in 1995, and Taylor said his sights were

firmly fixed on the Briton’s world record.

“It was a great fight and I saved it until my last jump,” said Taylor. “We are that close to a record, this makes you even hungrier!

“I am looking forward to Rio (Olympics) with the other competitors.”

Cuban rival Pedro Pablo Pichardo claimed silver with a best of 17.73m, and 2008 Olympic champion Nelson Evora took bronze when he went out to 17.52m with his last jump.

her 200m and relay expertise, clocked a blistering time of 49.26 seconds, the best in the world this year.

Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas claimed silver in a personal best of 49.67sec, with Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson taking bronze (49.99).

Felix, 29, has three world 200m titles to her name and is the reigning Olympic champion over the shorter distance, having previously bagged silver at the 2004 and 2008 Games. But with several Olympic and

world 4x400m relay golds on her resume, Felix wanted to test herself over the longer distance and it paid off spectacularly at a packed Bird’s Nest.

“It’s weird, it’s different to be down there for the 400m,” the American said. “I wanted to challenge myself this year and I did and I’m happy I could be successful and that I trusted in the plan and it came together.”

Felix missed out on the Moscow worlds in 2013 because of injury after over-reaching two years previously in Daegu.

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt easily outstripped American rival Justin Gatlin to claim

his fourth consecutive world 200m title yesterday and complete a rousing sprint double in Beijing.

Bolt clocked a world-leading 19.55 seconds to beat Gatlin by nearly two-tenths, thumbing his chest as he crossed the line to add the 200m to his 100m title at the world championships.

The clear victory extends Bolt’s domination of sprinting which stretches back to when he took the world by storm at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, also at the Bird’s Nest stadium.

Gatlin, who has served two doping bans and finished just one-hundredth of a second behind Bolt in Sunday’s 100m, clocked 19.74sec, with South African Anaso Jobodwana taking bronze with a national record of 19.87sec.

The victory meant Bolt has now remarkably won 11 of the last 12 individual Olympic and world sprint titles dating back to Beijing 2008, his only blip coming after a false start in the 100m at the 2011 worlds in Daegu.

“There was no doubt,” said Bolt, who has had pelvic problems this season and did not consider an attempt on his own world record of 19.19sec, set in 2009.

“I knew I wasn’t in the shape for a world record. But when it comes to the 200m, I am a different person, I was beaten there only once.

“My four world championships gold medals in the 200m, this is a big deal, a great accomplishment.”

There was drama after the race, however, as a shoeless Bolt was downed by a cameraman on a Segway electric scooter who had strayed too close to the Jamaican.

The cameraman mounted a fixed railing and slipped backwards, shooting the Segway from under him into Bolt’s heels and making the newly-minted champion fall backwards.

Bolt got up gingerly and limped away

before continuing his victory lap.

Gatlin, meanwhile, said his age had showed in the race.

“I feel tired. Going t h r o u g h three 100s and three 200s is taxing on the body,” he said.

“I’m the oldest person in the field and am still running and running pretty well. To be able to run 9.74sec is a really good showing.

“I gave it all I could give.”

- Electrifying bend - Huge cheers greeted

Bolt, wearing lycra shorts and singlet in the green, gold and black colours of Jamaica and placed in lane six, with Gatlin on his inside in lane four.

Applause also rang out for Gatlin, in a red one-piece suit, as the stadium comperes built up a boxing-match atmosphere at the packed Bird’s Nest.

The American, as in the 100m, suffered from a slower start than Bolt, who shot out of his blocks. Gatlin, a renowned fast starter who hasn’t lost over 200m since 2013 and has set personal best of 19.57sec this season, looked threatening coming off the bend.

But sandwiched between Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Jobodwana, Bolt, in fult tilt after an electrifying bend, responded by moving into his famed “drive phase”, unleashing the full power from his long legs.

IT’S GOLDEN BOLT AGAIN

ROONEYFIRES UNITED

Bruges

Wayne Rooney ended a 10-game scoring

drought in style with a hat-trick as Manchester United overpowered Club Brugge 4-0 on Wednesday to qualify for the Champions

League group phase.Rooney had

symbolised his side’s recent

goal-scoring p r o b l e m s ,

which have seen them

s c o r e o n l y t w i c e i n three

Premier League games, but he produced three assured finishes and Ander Herrera added another to return United to the tournament after a first season of absence in 19 years.

Louis van Gaal’s side won the play-off 7-1 on aggregate, following last week’s 3-1 victory in Manchester, and will discover the identities of their three group-stage opponents in Thursday’s draw in Monaco.

“I am very happy because it was our aim last year to participate in the Champions League and we did it tonight,” said Van Gaal, who also saw substitute Javier Hernandez miss a late penalty.

“Wayne has a very strong mentality and with his level, he always shall come back.”

It was Rooney’s first hat-trick since a treble against Bolton Wanderers in September 2011 and his first in Europe since his dazzling debut hat-trick for United against Fenerbahce as an 18-year-old in September 2004.

“To be honest, if I didn’t have a strong character, that (the criticism) might have affected me,” Rooney told BT Sport.

“I wasn’t worried. It is early days and when the chances came, I took them.”

Van Gaal had warned his players to expect a hostile reception and there were baffled faces before kick-off at Jan Breydel Stadium when the visiting fans were subjected to a blast of ‘You’ll

Never Walk Alone’, the anthem that Club Brugge happen to share with United’s bitter rivals Liverpool.

Van Gaal made two changes to his starting XI, bringing in Herrera and Michael Carrick, and the former looked less than comfortable in a midfield holding role, playing several careless passes and receiving a booking for an impetuous foul on Victor Vazquez.

‘Difference in quality’ The hosts created the first

chance, Luke Shaw blocking Tom De Sutter’s volley, but it was United who drew first blood as Memphis Depay reprised his role of tormentor from the first leg, when he had scored twice and created an injury-time goal for Marouane Fellaini.

Drifting infield from the left flank, the Dutch winger danced past three opponents before slipping a pass through to Rooney, who adjusted his feet sharply and poked the ball over the advancing Sinan Bolat.

It was his first goal in a United shirt since April 4.

The game already looked up for Club Brugge’s injury-ravaged squad and in the moments before half-time they squandered a sequence of increasingly presentable chances.

De Sutter saw a shot parried by Sergio Romero, Davy De fauw hooked a volley across goal and wide from a Vazquez corner and Abdoulay Diaby was then sent

clean through, only for Romero to save at his feet. (AFP)
