Dear Dr. Lade:

.. ".,

Subject: Revised Label Text - Master Label Treflan M.T.F. EPA Registration No. 62719-116 Your Sub.ission Dated May 14, 1991

2) Due to new EPA policy, part of the Environmental Hazards section has been changed. To comply, change the sentence "00 not apply to water or wetlands (swamps, bogs, or marshes)" on both the container label and the product label literature to read "Do not apply directly to water, to areas where surface water is present or to intertidal areas below the mean high water .ark."

3) Make the following changes under the Mixing Directions:

a) At the end of the Mixing - Treflan M.T.F. Tank Mixes section, add the statement "precautioD: 00 not allow water or spray mixture to back siphon into a water source."

5) within the directions for Soybeans, under the section for Treflan/Co .. and/Lexone or Treflan/Co .. and/Sencor, reinstate the following 8tat~ents under Precautions as per the 8uppl .. ental labsl accepted on March 6, 1986:

"Following application of Co_and do not plant wheat, oats, barley, rye or alfalfa in the fall of the year of application or in the spring of the year following application as crop injury .ay occur. a) The second U.S. Patent listed on both the container label and the product label literature should be corrected to read "4,226,789."

b) Under Small Grains - Barley, Durum and Wheat, throughout the section for Special Precautions for Use of Treflan on Small Grains, the product is mistakenly referred to as "Treflan E.C." rather than "Treflan M.T.F. n This should be corrected before the final printing of the label.

A stamped copy is enclosed for your records. Please submit five (5) final printed copies for the referenced label, incorporating the above changes.

Trellan M.T.F. may be applied in lKJ.Iid sprays 01 water or Iiqu~ lerI~iZer, or ~ted on dry buk lertlllzer. To prevenlloSS 01 herbicidal activity, Trellan IIIJst be IOiI incorporated within 24 hours after ~n. Trellan may be tank-mixed or lollowed by overlay or posterneP,jence treatments with other herbicides to improve the spectrum 01 weeds controled. Trellan controls weeds by disrupting growth processes during germination. Trellan does not controt established weeds.

General Use Precautions

• Applied according to directions and under normal growing conditions, Trellan wiH not harm the treated crop. Overapplication may result in crop injury or rotational crop damage lrom soil residue. Uneven application or improper incorporation 01 Trellan can result in erratic weed co~rol or crop injury. SeedUng disease, cold weather, deep planting, excessive moisture, high salt concentration or drought may weaken crop seedlings and increase U08 possibility 01 damage lrom Trellan. Under these conditions, delayed crop development or reduced yields may result.

• Do not apply Trellan to SOils that are wet or are subject to prolonged periods oIllooding as poor weed co~rot may result.

Mixing Directions

Mixing • Trellan M. T:F. Alone: Trellan may be miYed with water or most liquid fertilizer materials. Prior to rruing Treflan in liquid fertilizer, refer to the label section entitled "TESTING FOR COMPATIBILITY IN LIQUID FERTILIZERS· for tesling procedures to determine con~atibility with the liquid fert~izer product to be used. The combination of Treflan with solution and suspension-type fertilizers provides weed and grass control equal to water sprays.

Fin spray tank 113 to 1/2 fuR with clean water or liquid fertilizer. Start agitation. Add correct amount 01 Trellan and continue agitation while filling tank to required spray volume.

PrKaUtlon: Do not allow water or spray mixture to back siphon into a water source.

Mixing • Trellan M.T.F. Tank Mlxe.: Treflan may be tank mixed with other products and applied with water or most liquid fertiHzer materials. Prior to mixing Trellan tank mixes in liquid fertilizer, refer to label section entitled "TESTING FOR COMPATIBILITY IN LIQUID FERTILIZERS· for testing procedures to determine tank mix ~ibility with the liquid fertiliter product to be uSed.

Vigorous, COlttooous agitation during mixing, filling and ttvouohoUt application is required for all tank mixes. Sparger pipe agitators generally provide the most effective agilation in spray tanks. To prevent foaming in the spray t... aid stirring or splashing air into the spray mixture. To prevent foaming during filling, kat'. . ". fill pipe below the surface of the liquid in the spray tank.

MIxing Order: FMI the spray tank to 1/4 to 113 of the total spray volume required. Start agitation. Add different formulation types in the order indiCated below, allowing time for co~te mixing and dispersion after addition of each product. Allow extra mixing and dispersion time lor dry llowable products.

Add different formulation types in the following order: Dry lIowables (OF); wettable powders (WP); aqueous suspensions (AS), floWabies (F) and liquids (L)

Maintain agitation and fill spray tank to 3141)f total spray volume. Add Trellan M.T.F. and other emulsifiable concentrates (Ee) and any sokltlons (S).

Finish fUling the spray tank. Maintain contlru)Us agitation during nixing, final filling and throughout application. "spraying and agitation must be stopped before the spray tank is empty, the materials may settle to the bottom. Settled materials must be resuspended before spraying is resumed. A sparger agitator Is particularly uselulfor this purpose. Sattled material may be more diIIicul to resuspend than when originally rnixed.

Premixing: Dry and fiowable formulations may be premixed with water (slurried) and added 10 the spray tank through a 20-35 mesh screen. This prOCedure assures good inkial dispersion of these products in liquid fert~izer or water.

Line screens In the spray tank shook! be no finer than 50 mesh (100 mesh is finer than 50 mesh).

Testing for Compatibility In Liquid Fertilizers

Treflan alone or in tank nix combination with dry flowables (OF), wettable powders (WP) , a<JIBOUS suspensions (AS), llowables (F), liquids (L), or solutions (S) may not cormine properly with some fluid fertHizer materials. SmaU quantities shouk! always be tested before lui-scale mixing. Follow the lesting procedure below to determine if a compatibHIty agent Is needed and which one works best In your herbicidelfertilizer mixtun;. '"11e seven compatibility agents listed at the end of this section have been thoroughly tested. C .ner sufaClants commercially available mayor may not be St,itable for use with liquid lertilizers.

Te.Ung Procedure: 1. Add 1 pint of the liquid -ftIrtilizer to a quart jar. 2. Add 1 to 4 teaspoon(s) of the OF, WP, AS, F, or L formulation (depending on mixing ratio

raquired) to the liquid fertilizer. Close the jar and agitate until the materials are evenly dispersed in the liquid fertilizer. If the materials do not disperse well, it may be necessary to slurry the chemicals in waler before adding to lhe fertilizer.

3. After dispersing the materials (step 2) add 3 to 4 tuspoons of Treflan to the jar and shake well. Add solution herbicides to the mixture last and agitate. Observe the jar for about 10 minutes. " materials rise to the surface and form a thick layer (oily curdS) that will not redlsperse when agitated, a compatibility agent is needed. "the mixture is easily redispersed with slight agitatiOn, a compatibility agent is not required. Good agitation, however, must be provided to maintain dispersion in the spray tank.

4. If lhe need for a compatibility agent is demonstrated (Slep 3) the following prOCedure ic; recommended: Using a clean quart jar repeat step one above and add 112 teaspoon 01 the compatibility agent to the liquid lert~izer. Mix weH and then repeat steps 2 and 3.

An effective ~1biIIIy agent will cause the mixture to remain uniformly dispersed with lillIe or no separation (011 ttsing to the surface) for one han hour or longer. n slight separation occurs, 2 to 3 inversions of the jar shook! be sufficient to un~ormly redisperse the mixture. "oily curds form and wiU not redisperse, additional compatibility agent or an alternative compatibility agent shouk! be tried.

Use a clean jar lor each test A ~tible mixture wil have a uniform appearance and wil be relatively easy to redisperse with gentle agitation of the jar.

Compatibility Agents: The phosphate ester-type surfactants listed below are designed for use with liquid lertHizers and can be nixecl at rates as low as 1 112 to 2 pints per ton 01 liquid fertilizer. Add the compatibility agent just belore adding pesticideS.

Fall Application: Fall application can be used lor all crops for which Trellan is recommended as a preplant incorporated treatment. Reier to "APPROVED CROPS" section lor any crop-specific tall application instructions.

In the states of Callomia. North Dakota. South Dakota and MiMesota. apply and incorporate Trellan any time between September 1 and December 31. In an other states, faU apply Trellan between October 15 and December 31.

Ground may be bedded up over winter. On bedded ground. reduce beds to desired height before planting. by moving some treated soil from beds into furrows. Where soil is left flat over winter, care should be taken not to tum up untreated soil during spring bedding operations. Destroy established weed!; during seedbed preparation. Weeds established in furrows as a result of exposing untreated soU shOuld be destroyed before planting. FaU application 01 Treflan is not recommended on fields which remain wet or are subject to periods 01 flooding.

Preemergence Application Immediately After Planting: Apply and incorporate Trellan immediately after planting and prior to crop germination. Adjust incorporation equipment so as to not disturb planted seed. ReIer to the "APPROVED CROPS" section 01 this label lor crop-specific inStructions.

Postam, rganca and Layby Application: Apply and incorporate Trellan at the recommended rate to the established crop at or belore the last cultivation. Required preharvest intervals lor Trellan treatments for certain crops are specified in the "APPROVED CROPS" section 01 this label. Crop oover may preVErnt unil.,rm soil coverage from over-the-top sprays. To avoid this problem. use drop nozzles or directed sprays to achieve unilorm soil cover::~.

Tr.flan Incorporation Directions

Soli Preparation and IncorporatIon Ground cover. SUCh as crop residues or existing weeds. can interfere with uniform soil incorporation 01 Trellan. A manageable level ot ground cover will allow uniform incorporation into the top 2 to 3 inches of soU. Ground cover and crop residues, if excessive. shOuld be reduced by appropriate soU tillage prior to application.

Break up clods using tiDage equipment prior to Trellan application. Trellan rrust be incorporated within 24 hours alter application. W~h most equipment and methods 01 application, a seoond incorporation is required and may occur any time before planting. The second incorporation shOuld be In a dIIIerent direction. and to avoid bringing untreated soil to the surface. should not be deeper than the first.

General SoIl Condnlona: The soU surface should be smooth enough to allow for unifonn application and effiCient Incorporation of Treflan. Apply when soil moisture is suffiCient to allow the breakup of large clods and uniform mixing during the incorporation process. SOW compaction ancUor nonuniform Incorporation may occur If soil Is excessively moist.

Incorporetlon In lidded eunu,.: In bedded cullure, Treflan should be Incorporated to a depth of 2 to 3 inches in the final seedbed.

Appllc.tlon prior to bedding: Apply Treflan and incorporate one time with recommended equipment. The bedding operation serves as the second incorporation. Do not expose untreated soil during post-bedding operations such as planting since removal of treated soM during planting can allow weed germination and establishment in the drill row.

Application after bedding: Knock off beds to planting height before applying Trellan. Apply and incorporate Treflan with recommended equipment that will conform to the shape of the bed. Do not expose untreated soH.

=unlv.tlon After Planting: Treated crops may be shallowly cultivated without reducing the weed control activity of Treflan. Limit depth of cultivation to the zone of treated soli (2 to 3 inches) to avoid moving untrealed soil 10 lhe surface. Exposure of untreated soU may cause loss of weed control.

Incorporation EquIpment Use Incorporation equipment capable 'Jf mixing Treflan uniformly into the top 210 3 inches of the final seedbed. Use of inappropriate equipment or improper use of recommended equipment may resull in erratiC weed control anei'or crop injury. Incorpt":'lion equipment such as a tandem disc wil mix Treflan approximately hall as deep as the equiplilent is set to operate. For example, a disc set to cut four inches deep win mix most of the Treflan within the top 2 inches of soil. Any recommended incorporation implement may be used alone or in combination with any other reconvnended implement. Two incorporation passes are required unless otherwise specified.

Tandem Dlec: Set equipment to cut 4 to 6 inches deep and operale al 4 10 6 ~.

Field eunlv.tor: Sel t':IUipment 10 cuI 3 10 4 inches deep and operate al a minimum of 5 ~. A field cullivator is defined as an implement with 310 4 rows of sweeps, spaced at intervals of 7 inches or less and slaggered so that no soil is len untumed. Chisel points should nol be used.

Combination Seedbed Condnlonera: These implements are defined as three or more Iiliage devices contlined to operale as a single tillage unit. For example, 2 to 3 rows of field cultivator C- or S-shaped shanks with an effective sweep spacing of 6 to 9 inches, (staggered so that no soil is len untumed), followed by a spike-tooth or flextlne harrow, followed by a ground driven reel or basket. Combination implements should be set to cut 3 to 4 inches deep and operated at a minimum of 6 mph. Treflan can be incorporated with one pass when using a combination seedbed conditioner. Two incorporations are required under conditions which prevent optimum soH mixing such as excessive trash, roughness, high clay content or soil moisture.

Roiling eunlv.tor: Set equipment to cut 2 to 4 inches deep and operale at 6 to 8 mph. Generally, rolling cullivators are atMquate for use only on coarse and medium soils. In sugarcane the rolling cullivalor may be used on fine textured soils.

led Condnloner (Do-AlI): Set equipment to cuI 2 to 4 Inches deep and operate at 4 to 6 mph. One incorporation pass is adequate in bedded cullure, while two incorporation passes are required in flal planted cu"ure. The do-all should be used only on coarse and medium textured soils.

Speclll Preclutlon. for U .. of Tratlln E.C. on Sm... Grain.

Carefully follow directions tor use of Treflan E.C. on smal grains to minirr'!e pote .... ial crop stress. Under certain conditions, delayed crop emergence and or stand reduction may occur when Trellan E.C. is applied to barley, durum or wheat. The contJlned effect 01 certain cultural practices and untavoratle soli or environmental conditions may cause excessive crop seedling stress resulting In retarded crop growth, stand reduction and possibly reduced yield. For best results, observe the lollowing cultural practices or precautions:

• Use tiHage methods that provide a uniformly firm seedbed and time tillage operations to conserve moisture.

• Irrigate prior to planting or after germination and emergence. 'Moisture received between planting and emergence may cause crusting, especially on loose, lriable seedbeds.

• Do not exceed recommended application rates for Treflan E.C .. ThiS is particularty importa", on coarse textured or low organic mailer SOils.

• Carefully lollow Incorporation directions. When applying pre~ lant incorporated treatments, operate equipment at recommended depth and speed 10 pIa:e Treflan E.C. into the upper 1 to 1.5 inches of soW. If applied after planting, set equipment so as to not diSturb planted seed.

• Set drills to place seed at a the depth specified in use direct'.)I15. A planting depth greater than 2.5 inches for spring wneat or durum will result in incrtlased seedling stress and decreased emergence.

• Use only high quality seed where Trellan E.C. is to be applied (aVOid use of small seed with low starch reserves). •

• If seed treatments are used, apply at the correct rate and uniformly across aU seeds. Mis~'=lplication may result in reduced germination andlor seedling vigor.

• AVOid use 01 seed varieties known to have poor seedlir~ (emergence) vigor. • Do not lall apply Trellan E.C. in combination with allY other preplant Incorporated herbicide.
