TYPESFRAGMENTATION HANDGRENADES containing a high-ex-plosive charge in a metallic bodywhich is shattered by the explosionof the charge.OFFENSIVE HAND GRENADEScontaining a high-explosive charge ina paper body, designed for demolitionor lethal shock effect.CHEMICAL HAND GRENADEScontaining a chemical agent whichproduces a toxic o r irritant effect, ascreening smoke, incendiary action orany combination of these actions.PRACTICE HAND GRENADEScontaining a reduced charge; simulatefragmentation grenades.TRAINING HAND GRENADESused in training troops; do not con-tain explosives or chemicals.

The filler in a grenade may be a power-ful explosive, a gas, a smoke-producingor an incendiary agent. The filler infragmentation grenades is either TNT(trinitrotoluene) or EC Blank Fire Smoke-less Powder. The latter is used in loadingblank ammunition for small arms weapons.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FILLERSEC powder is less powerful than TNT

and usually is exploded by a.11 gnit, ingrather than a detonating agent. Grenadesloaded with EC powder are issued fuzedand ready for use. They are not suscepti-ble to mass detonation.

The standard filler for offensive gren-ades is pressed TNT.

Fillers in chemical grenades consist of.various chemical mixtures and solutions. The manufacturing, storage and issue ofChemical Grenades is a function of theChemical Warfare Service.! NCIasS\FlED A

Practice Grenades contain a smallamount of black powder and are designedto give an indicating puff of smoke whenthe igniting type fuze functions.

TIME AND AUTOMATIC FUZESThe fuze is the device which causes the

grenade to function. All standard handgrenade fuzes (including most of thechemical hand grenade fuzes) are Timeand Automatic types. A time fuzefires the grenade after a lapse of time andnot upon percussion or impact. Grenadeswhich contain an automatic fuze func-tion automatically as soon as the grenadeleaves the hand, provided the safety pinhas been removed and the safety leverheld close to the body of the grenadeprior to throwing. This lever provides asafety feature by eliminating the neces-sity of manually starting the fuze actionbefore the grenade is thrown toward thetarget.

FUZE CLASSIFICATIONHand grenade fuzes are either detonat-

ing or igniting types.A detonating fuze is used when shock

is necessary to initiate the action of theexplosive filler,

Igniting fuzes are used when the filleris one which requires heat initiation. This type of fuze will ignite the filler asthough it had been lighted by a match,

All detonating and igniting handgrenade fuzes have the same generalform and appearance. The fuze assemblyconsists primarily of a fuze body, havinga threaded portion to permit insertioninto the grenade body, a safety leverwhich restrains a striker, a safety pin tohold the lever in place, and a deep cupwhich is crimped to the lower portion ofthe fuze body and extends inside the

grenade body when the fuze is assembThe compound iI1 the cup determinewhether the final action of the fuze be one of detonation or ignition.

OPERATIONThe safety device is a cotter pin w

ring attached which enables it towithdrawn easily. One end of the slever covers the top of the fuze bsealing it against foreign bodies, hooks over a lip in the fuze body. other end of the safety lever extedownward and follows the contour ogrenade.

A grenade should be held with safety lever pressed close to the grenbody by the palm of the hand. thrower must take every precaution withdrawing the safety pin, not to rehis grip on the safety lever,

When the grenade is thrown, safety lever is detached by the releasthe striker spring and the impact ostriker. When no longer restrainedthe lever, the striker rotates abouhinge pin and strikes a primer in upper part of the fuze body.

The primer is a center-fire type simto a shotgun shell primer. The flame the primer charge ignites a delay chwhich in the lM6A3 and MlOA3 consists of a powder column compresin a lead tube. The burning time vfrom 4.0 to 5.0 seconds.

The delay charge ignites a black Powigniting charge in the MlOA3 fuze a tet,ryl detonator in the M6A3 fuze* igniter or detonator initiates the charge. The total burning time Ofassembly is the same as the fuze, namfrom 4.0 to 5.0 sec.

RIFLE, RAGMENTATIObody is filled with 4 ounces of Pentoliteusing the 1~0110~ charge principle. Thetail contains the impact fuze and thestabilizing fin is spot welded on astabilizer tube screwed to the head. Theimpact fuze consists of a firing pin heldby a spring in flight. When shipped, thefiring pin is retained by a safety pin. When the grenade strikes a target thepin moves forward to activate thedetonator and explode the charge. Theh0110~ or shaped charge of this grenadehas remarkable armor-penetrating qual-ities, The bI9Al anti-tank rifle grenadesupersedes the grenade, A.T., M9.

GRENADE, ANTITANK, PRACTICE,MliAl-STANDARD-This is an inert-loaded dummy grenade similar in shapeand weight to the antitank grenade,M9Al. This practice grenade supersededthe Ml1 and JIllAl practice grenades.Tlw JlllA2 differs from the M9Al inthat the fin is replaceable. Extra fins areshipped with each grenade in the eventthe original one is bent or wears out.GRENADE, RIFLE, FRAGMENTA-TION, IMPACT - Ml7 - This grenadeconsists of a fin stabilizer assembly withimpact type fuze similar to that usedfor Grenade, AT, M9Al. The head consistsof a blk. 11X1 hand grenade fuze bodywhich is screwed in the fuze adapter onthe stabilizer assembly. The Ml7 grenadeis used in a manner identical with that o fthe Adapter, Grenade-Projection, -Ml,however, it offers a unit ready for firingwithout assembly in the field as is re-quired for the Ml adapter.ADAPTER, GRENADE-PROJECTION,@-STANDARD---The grenade-projec-tion adapter, Jf 1: was designed to permitthe projection of the Xlk. IIAl fragmen-tation grenade from the rifle. It has a finassembly similar to that of the M9Algrenade. The head of the fin assembly has

four claws which clip around and hold thebody of the 3Ik. IIAl fragmentationgrenade with the S-second time fuze. Oneof the claws has an arming clip whichholds the safety lever of the &Ik. IIAlgrenade. Upon setback the arming clipreleases the safety lever o f the Mk. IIAlfragmentation grenade and the fuze ex-plodes the grenade after 5 seconds. Theadapter with Jlk. IIAl fragmentationgrenade is fired from the same launcherused to launch the M9Al and other rifle.grenades,
