The [atter firmoperatecl thc Ed<Iystone Arsenal atEddystone, Pa., which was ownecl bythe Baldwin Locontotive Worki. OnSept. 21, t916, after l considerablenumber of rifles had been tleliverccl,thcse contracts werc cultccled bv the

Upon final termination of thesecontracts on Nov. 9, 1918, a total of2,193,429 Moclel l9i 7 Enfield rifleshad becn produced. After Wolld War l, Model 1917 En-fìcltl rifles were stored in war reserveancl large numbers were subsequentlysold to NRA members through the Di-rector of Civilian Marksmanship. Dur-ing the early, part of Wort<t War IIlarge quantities of these rifles we¡e firstsold and then lend-leased to our Allies.

Receivers and bolts of the Model1917 Enfield rifle were ma,Je of 3/zo/onickel steel by all 3 manufacturers. Inmodifying the cal..303 Pattern l9l4rifle for the .30-'06 cartridge ,it wasneccssary to change the rifling specifica-tions. The 5-groove, Ieft twisi Enfield

rifling rvas retained, but bore diameterwas reduced to .300" with groove depthof .005". Magazine capacity is 6 car-tridges and the receiver has clip slotsfor reloading with a 5-round Model1903 Springfield clip.

The aperture-type folding leaf rearsight is adjustable for elevation only,and is a superior battle sight to thatof the Model 1903 Springfield. Windageadjustments in the Model l9I7 aremade by tapping the front sight to leftor right in its dovetail. The cock-on-closing action of the Model l9l7 riflehas been the subject of some criticismby Americans accustomed to the cock-on-opening Model 1903 Springfleld andMauser 98 rifles. Actually this featureis a very sound one for a military rifle,in which the chamber may become so

hot that extraction becomes diificultdue to sticking cases, and thus adds tothe effort required to lift the bolthandle. Those who become proficientwith cock-on-closing rifles are not awareof any handicap by virtue of this modeof bolt operation.

During World War II it was foundnecessary to produce additional barrelsfor the Model 1917 rifle and these weremade by private firms. The High Stand-ard Manufacturing Corp. produced 4-groove barrels and Johnson Atttomaticsproducecl 2-groove barrels, both withright twist and to Model 1903 Spring-field rifling specifications. After WorldWar II a few NRA members who hadpurchased rifles through the DCM com-plained that the receiver rings of theirrifles were cracked. The majority ofthese rifles were of Ed<Jystone ntanu-facture and had been rebarreled duringthe World Wal lI period. In some in-stances the cracks were not clearlyevident untiI the receiver had beenpolished and blued.

Faulty receivers werè at one time ex-changed gratis by the DCM but supplyof this part is exhausted.

Seating and aligning band-type frontsight base is best done before short-ening barrel. A sporting-type front sight andfully adjustable aperture rear sight arerecommended. (A variety of such sightsis available in a wide price range.)

Sporting stocks for the Enfield areoffered by several makers in variousstyles, degrees of completion, andgrades of wood. These range from thecompletely finished stock requiring verylittle inletting to install the barreledaction, to the roughly turned blankwith only token action inletting. Studyof manufacturers' circulars and catalogsis advisable before ordering the stock.

The Bishop stock used for the rifle

shown required only minor inletting infitting the receiver and trigger guard,and inletting the barrel channel was notdifficult. The type of stock chosen is

necessarily related to the variety of in-letting and shaping tools required.

A set of stockmaker's hand screwswith T-handles will prove helpful ininletting the barreled action into thestock, Their use saves much time.

A shallower and more attractiveaction profile is obtained by straighten-ing the front tang of the trigger guardand by reducing the depth of the nraga-zine box about /¿". Removing the stepfrom the front trigger guard tang re-quires that it be cut off and then weldedback to the body of the guard. A fixtureis needed to hold the parts in place andit is recommended that this job be givento an experienced gunsmith,

Many professional gunsmiths havealtered quantities of these rifles and havethe necessary fixtures and knowledge.

The same holds true for alterationof the receiver bridge, which involvesremoving the protective wings and con-touring of the bridge to the same heightand radius as the receiver ring. Profes-sional gunsmiths usually do this by mill-ing or grinding. The amateur gunsmithcan do a creditable job using files alone.First step is removal of the military

rear sight assembly. The ears are thencut off with a hacksaw, after which thetop of the receiver bridge is filed flatand level with receiver ring. Flat sur-face of receiver bridge tilts downslightly towards the rear so that use ofa straightedge to span receiver bridgeand ring is required to effect preciseleveling. After filing the receiver bridgeflat, file excess material from thecorners, taking care that surfaces aremade parallel with the long axis of thereceiver. A power grinder will proveextremely helpful in removing excessmetal. A cardboard or metal templatecut to the same diameter as receiver ring(1.37') serves as a guide in filing andin final shaping of receiver bridge. Thisis used in conjunction with the straight-edge so that surfaces of receiver ringand bridge are made parallel. Somemetal can also be filed off the left rearside of the receiver bridge to give a

more pleasing profile. -+

Receivers of Winchester and Eddy-stone manufacture usually have a deepelliptical mortise in the receiver bridge.This can be covered with a thin metalplate formed to the contour of thebridge, or a fillet of steel can be weldedin to fill it. Such welding is best doneby an experienced gunsrnith as it isnecessary to shield the forepart of thereceiver from high tenlperature.

Receivers and bolts of these rifles areof nickel steel, and the receivers inparticular are always tough and some-tinres quite hard,. High-speed hacksawblades ancl gootl quality files are there-f ore neces,sary.

The barrel is shortened by cuttingoff the excess with a hacksaw. If asleeve-type ramp sight assembly is to beused, it is best to remove the militaryfront sight assembly and polish the last6" or so of the barrel before installingthe sight and shortening the barrel.

The ramp sight is then driven on thepolished barrel and aligned on thespline cut of the Service sight. This canbe done quite accurately by eye, using2 short straightedges placed alongsidethe sight ramp. Gentle taps with aplastic- or brass-faced hammer willrotate the ramp into precise position.After the ramp sight is in position, adetent for its locking screw is drilledthrough the hole in the ramp into thebarrel using a No. 31 drill. Depth ofhole in barrel should be at least 7/76",so that the sight locking screw h¿¡s afirm purchase.

The barrel can now be cut off so thatnot more fhan 1A " extends beyond the

ramp band. A fine mill Iìle is used totrue the end of the barrel, after whichthe cut surface can be stoned and thenpolishecl with fine abrasive paper. Sharpontsi<le edge of the nruzzle is brokenwith the stone or a needle file.

Crowning the bore to renrove burrsand sharp edges is done with a round-head brass or iron screw and coarseautomobile valve-grinding compound.The screw can be chucked in a hand orelectric drill.

It will be noted that the barrel wasnot shortened to desired length beforefìtting the ramp, and that a section ofthe barrel near the n¡uzzle was polishedbeforehand. This procedure is advisablebecause one cannot estimate preciselywhere the ranrp will Iodge when drivento a firm fit on the barrel. The rampmust fit very tightly or it nlay shift fromthe shock of recoil-even when securedwith'a locking screw. Pre-polishing thebarrel in the vicinity of the ranrp is atl-visable since it is difficult to polish thebarrel with ramp in place.

The above procedure is unnecessaryif a bandless sweat-on or screw-onramp is used.

Mounting receiver sightThe receiver sight can be mounted

using its base as a drill fixture and asmall machinist's or carpenter's squareto orient the base in relation to flats onthe bottom of the receiver. The baseshould be clamped in place on the re-ceiver and its alignn.rent re-checked be-fore drilling the first hole. The initialhole drilled with a No. 31 drill is then

tapped with 6-48 tap lubricated withturpentine or tapping lubricant. Thesight base is then unclantpecl frorn thereceivcr and the burrs rcrrovcd fronrthe edge of the hole with a finc stone.The sight base is then secured to thereceiver with mounting screw and align-nrent re-checked with a square beforedrilling and tapping the other hole.

Minor misalignntent of rear sight canbe corrected by filing the base, orthrough use of thin nretal shims betweenthe base and the receiver bridge. Drill-ing and tapping sight rlounting holes isbest acconrplished using a drill press.More precise sight nrounting can bedone using a surface plate, V-blocks,machinist's squares, or a fixture asshown. Purchase of such itents is notnecessary unless one intends to do con-siderable sight mounting.

A very creditable polishing job onbarrel and action can be done withabrasive cloths and papers plus son-restoning and filing to renrove light stanr¡rmarks, nicks, and dents. lnitial polish-ing on the bnrrel is done with strips of2/O entery cloth about l/+" wid,e, tornfull length of the sheet. These are usedto rough polish the barrel using a mo-tion akin to shining shoes.

After the barrel is rough polishedwith enrery cloth, it should be polishedlengthwise using emery cloth and thcnsoft-back silicon carbide papers of suc-cessively finer grits (400 and 600) to re-nlove scratches left by the coarserabrasives. Final polish is inrparted with

ló Inletting barreled action is done afterinletting trigger guald. Barrel chan-nel may have to be roughed in withgouge so stockr¡akcrs screws can beusecl. This is done by placing barreledaction on top of stock, taking care toseat it in approximately correct loca-tion. Outline of barrel is then scribedor penciled on stock. Pencil or scribeshould be toed in slightly to avoidpossibly overcrìtting channel. Beinglonger, real handscrew can be usedin front guard screw of receiver dur-ing initial phase of inletting. Spottingcolor is applied to both balrel andreceiver, and coating must be replacedbefore making each impression. Blowswith rubber mallet on receiver andbarrel will give better color impres-sions. Balreled action mrìst be inlettedevenly and square with stock. Heavytension on handscrews may wedgestock apart and result in splits throughaction mortise. Clamps across re-ceiver bridge and receiver ring areas

will prevent this

crocus cloth. All polishing after theinitial emery cloth treatment should belengthwise and the barrel should bewiped clean when changing to a finergrit abrasive cloth or paper.

Polishing actionPolishing of the action assembly is

,accomplished in. the same manner, butpreliminary polishing is done using a

medium grit triangular or half-roundCarborundum or India stone. Suchstones âre extremely efficient whenused with plenty of light oil to preventglazing. A fine-cut half-round Swiss-pattern needle file is desirable for clean-ing up areas inaccessible to the stones,and for final profiling of the triggerguard loop after it is roughed to shapewith the round file. All filed surfacesshould be stoned and then they can bepolished with abrasive paper. On manysurfaces a better polish can be achievedby backing the abrasive paper with asmooth-cut mill file.

No attempt should be made to re-move deep inspector's or proof mark-ings on the barrel or bolt as this willresult in unsightly flats. Serial numbermarkings should not be removed frornthe receiver ring as this is in violationof Federal law.

Rough polishing of the barreledaction should be completed before in-letting it into the stock. This insures aclose fit between wood and metal which

might not be obtainable if nretal partswere cleaned up and polished after in-letting. Friction between nretal partsand the stock tends to abrade sides ofthe barrel and receiver, so final polish-ing should be done upon completionof inletting.

Some form of coloring agent must beused to transfer impression of the metalparts to the wood. This can be lamp-black and oil, or oil-base tinting colorssold by paint stores. The coloring agentis best applied with cloth patches tosecure a unifornr, thin coating. Pressureof the metal parts against the woodtransfers color to high points, which arethen cut or chiseled away. The processis repeated again and again until partshave been inletted to full depth.

Inlet trigger guard firsr

The trigger guard should be inlettedfirst, as it establishes relationship ofthe receiver with the stock recoilshoulder and allows use of the stock-maker's hand screws to pull the bar-reled action into the stock.

In most instances the original bar-rel channel in the stock will be toonarrow and shallow to allow use ofthe stockmaker's screws, This channelmust be enlarged with the gouge anddeepened to the point where the rear,or long, stockmaker's screw will en-gage front guardscrew hole in the re-

ceiver. A headless guide screw isobtainable from gunsnriths supplyhouses for the purpose of aligning re-ceiver with guard screw hole in thetrigger guard tang. While not abso-lutely necessary, this guide screw ishelpful when working with semi-in-letted stocks as it assists in accuratepositioning of the receiver recoil shoul-der in the stock.

The receiver recoil shoulder mustbear firmly against the stock and thebottom flat of the receiver must bein intimate contact with its bed inthe receiver mortise. Lower surface ofreceiver tang must also have full bear-ing against the stock. Slight clearanceshould be provided between verticalsurfaces of receiver tang and the stockto prevent splitting of the stock fromrecoil. Clearance of .005" is sufficient,and resultant gap is not unsightly.

Bedding barrelThe barrel can be full-floated

throughout its entire length, or pres-sure-bedded near the muzzle to givean upward pressure against the bar-rel of from T to 10 lbs. Experienceshows that the full-floated barrel isbest as zero of the rifle will not bechanged by forearm warpage. Clear-ance between barrel and barrel chan-nel sufficient to admit a thick pieceof paper is adequate and is not un-sightly if gap is uniform.

Contâct between sides of the re-ceivcr and stock mortise is not im-portant from the standpoint of thcrifle's potential accuracy, but a goodfit is handsome and is indicative ofcareful workmanship.

Shaping stockExterior of the stock is shaped with

files and rasps. A blockplane or spokeshave will prove handy in trimmingoff excess wood. Many semi-inlettedstocks have an excess of wood in allareas, and especially in the butt.Since metal parts of the Enfield rifleare quite heavy, it is advisable tocut away as much wood as possiblein the interest of reducing over-allweight of the finished rifle. Finishedstock need not be spindly, but shouldnot be clubby.

The plastic fore-end tip furnishedon some stocks is relatively soft andwill melt if buffed with power equip-ment. This part is best filed to shapeand then sanded with abrasive papersto a smooth finish. Final polishing isdone with fine steel wool followedby hand buffing with rough cloth.

Production-type aluminum oxideabrasive papers are recommended tosmooth the surfaces of the stock priorto finishing. Ordinary flint sandpaperis not satisfactory for stock work.

Plane surfaces on the stock are pre-served by use of a sanding block to

Hunting-type telescope mounts for at-tachment to side or top of the receiverare offered by several makers. Wil-liams SM70 side monnt shown forMl9l7 and Pl4 rifles is of lightweightalloy. Ìts base is secured to side ofreceiver with 3 large screws. Ring andscope assembly is readily detachedfrom base by loosening 2 large millednuts under rings. Rings ¿rre furnishedto position scope over bore line, oroff-set to left to permit clip loadingand alternate use of scope or metallicsight. Hinged scope mounts are alsoavailable so scope can be swung aside

back up the paper. Use of a block isespecially advisable with' figured woodas abrasive paper backed by the fin-gers alone will tend to cut away thesofter wood leaving a rippled surfacequite visible after finishing.

The stock can be flnished with lac-quer, spar varnish, plastic finish, orwith one of the drying-oil prepara-tions applied by hand rubbing. Thesevary in waterproofing capability, andthe drying oils with linseed oil baseare undoubtedly the poorest in thisrespect. ÉIowever, oil flnishes are easyto apply and are attractive. They havean added advantage in that minorabrasions suffered during use arereadily eliminated by rubbing on abit of the same oil. Regardless of thefinish used, it is important to followmanufacturer's recommendations.

In humid climates, drying of stockfinishes is accelerated by hanging thestock in a box heated with a 75-watt

light bulb. Such a drying chambercan be made at small cost with a lightsocket and extension cord mountednear the bottom of a long paper boxas used to package screen wire. Acoil of corrugated paper assembledwith adhesive tape will also suffice.Drive a tack into barrel channel neartip of fore-end and suspend stock inchamber with short length of stringheld on a crosspiece resting on topof the chamber. A few holes cut inbottom of the chamber below the lightbulb will aid in circulating warnr airaround the stock.

Bluing of the barreled action inthe home workshop is not suggesteddue to cost of equipment and ma-terials necessary to do a good job.Such work is best entrusted to theprofessional gunsmith. Swab-on chemi-cal blues do not give a durable anduniform finish, although they are ade-quate for touching up worn spots. I
