FROM ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE...DO YOU WANT THE GOOD NEWS OR THE BAD NEWS?

OK, Tell you what I can mix them together and you can determine if itsgood or bad news. We are getting EXTREMELY busy! Every spring, theseason gets here faster and faster. (That doesnt have anything to dowith me aging, does it?) As a unit, our region is on fire with activity. And fortunately, John Schlegel had those fire bottles repaired andrechargedso were ready to go! Scott Stout has put together a greatNew Member questionnaire to help us highlight our new members witha brief newsletter profile. From there, were counting on you, the sea-soned professional, to take note of their particular area of interest andtake the time to make them feel welcome. Remember, this recruit needsto be asked to play. Do you remember the first meeting you went to?Do you remember the first event you participated in? Your first Solo?Where you were scared that you were going to embarrass yourself bygoing off course the first run? Then, someone came up to you and asyou confessed your fear, they laughed and told you that everyone doesit! Dont worry about it! Then, as you lost your way and came

Driving back red-faced, you see they are clapping and giving you thethumbs up. Its OK and you go out again to humiliate yourself Sundayafter Sunday after Sunday. Remember your first race? You spun on thefirst lap, got off into the rough and broke a tie rod. Your significantother abruptly reminds you of the amount of money that just wentdown the toilet. You didnt even get a chance to clear that lump fromyour throat. That thrill that grew and grew from the time that yousigned the waiver at the gates. And enlarged to cold sweat as you sat onthe grid waiting to go out. The second that green flag dropped and yourpulse overtook your every sense. Gone. After one spin. Then, anotherdrivers suit walked up and asked if you were ok. Not only that, theymay have some spare parts, if you want to borrow something for theweekend. But if you need something else, they will be glad to show youwhere to get it in town. They had to get parts here one weekend undersimilar circumstances. That was years ago. Now, you offer the spareparts. Because you want people to run against and with. And someonedid it for you. IF YOU ARE THE KIND OF PERSON THAT CAN HELPUS MAKE FIRST CONTACT, WE NEED YOU. Scott can not be at allof the events where the opportunity exists for us to welcome our newmembers. If we can get four or five committee members to assist, one ortwo phone calls per month and an event once in awhile we can makethis family grow. How many of you are members because your parentswere? We are a family. Just as strange and varied as any other. We havearguments, financial problems, loves, disappointments and triumphs.ON WITH ANOTHER TRIUMPH..

Nick Folger has been recuperating, but if this is what he can do whilesick or injured, Im scared to see what hell do at 100%! Hes been work-ing on a RallyCross Program that has tremendous potential for puttingWOR in the public eye and providing our membership with some excit-ing afternoons! Be sure to check out his plan of attack and plan onbeing there. Theres revenue in that schedule! I would be remiss if I

MY MOST HUMBLEFORMAL APOLOGYAs we age, we tend to forget thedetails of recent events. Ourminds haze and arent quite assharp as they once were. In myexcitement and delight with theaccomplishment of ChristieMildon and her work receivingthe SCCA National Award forthe medium large regionalpublication I mistakenly statedthat this award had previouslybeen won by the Edgertons. Ifyou remember the beautifulwork that Nancy and Mike didon this publication you willunderstand how I easily couldhave made such an error. How-ever, it was the Lanes, PAULAND MARGE LANE, who mostrecently won this prestigiousaward. Forgive me, please. Andif you dont go to the F1 race, will you work Drivers Informa-tion at the WOR Games?

With Pauls wit and Margesattention to detail I m notsurprised. Who will win it forus next? Christie will retire atthe end of this year. Startlearning the ropes nowavoidthe rush!

suits, on and on and on. If one of our members sells what we need tobuywe will buy it from them. Why doesnt that make sense? I believethere are more businesses in our 400 + membership than WheelSource,Foreign Exchange, and Xwheels. You need to let us know who you areso that we can patronize your place. I promise well behave! ( Most ofus anyway!) Maybe a free trial will demonstrate how beneficial it can beto advertise in our National Award Winning Publication! IMPORTANT THE AD MUST BE RECEIVED BY MAY 15TH. IT CAN NOT BELARGER THAN A STANDARD BUSINESS CARD AND IT MUST BECAMERA READY OR ON A DISK (IBM). IF YOU HAVE FURTHERQUESTIONS, CALL CHRISTIE MILDON, EDITOR.

We hope you will take advantage of this offer and let your fellow mem-bers in on what you spend the rest of your week doing. For the rest ofthe membership those ads help pay for this publication. Mention thatyou heard about their business in the Rev Record.

I believe that I have gone on for quite long enough now. Except totease those Solo folks who wont go out and play in the rain Seri-ously, I am sorrythat the God ofThunder andSnow wouldntlet you go out inMarch. I know itwas a wise deci-sion for the safetyof our driversand workers.Even thoughpoor Phyllis, andmany others, have been wait-ing patiently allwinter to get outto that track. Itwont be long.Honest.

Until the nextevent, drivesafely and havefun!

didnt mention that Nick has had a little help, aside from Mom andShirley. Chris Watson has expanded his successful Mud Run ventureand lend his expertise to the program. As you will read elsewhere in thisissue, Chris will be running thin this year. (He didnt have all that muchto spare!) That means there is an opening on the Rally Cross Commit-tee, Eric, where are you? Nick will need more than a couple of goodmen (whats that Chinese invention that does the work of 100 men?Oh, yes, one woman.) Back on taskChris has accepted my request tobe the WOR Games Chair this year. (He is apprehensive, to say theleast.) I have assured him that he will have volunteers coming from thewoodwork to assist us in making this another- grand- and-glorious-worthy- of- WOR race, (despite that Formula thing going on). We are offto a good start with a few new faces mingled in with some of the oldiesbut goodies this year.

There is always room for more!

You will read in the minutes of the March general membership meetingthat we voted to support the Incorporation of the Central Division. Isupport this decision. I believe it a preventative measure and a positivestep in securing the funds that our regions generate.

The proposal that we printed in the Rev last month outlines the details. The final copy that I received the first week of March is very similar. When the Incorporation is complete, we will publish the adopted By-laws.

The WOR website committee met March 2nd at Frickers and reviewedour plans for further development of the Web page. Tracy has set somebig goals and is working towards helping our page actively recruit, advertise and update our members. We have decided that WOR willpost the Rev Record and its advertisers monthly. For this year, there willnot be any additional charge to those who advertise in the Rev, (eventhough, its now a National Award Winning Publication), and they willget the added exposure on the Website. We recommend that, we put acounter on the site so that we can present the number of hits we get aspart of the sales package next year as we review rates.

This should be an attractive package to sell ads, as it is an excellent buyfor the circulation that the ad will get. Our goal is to supplement theannual cost of the Rev Record with an increase in advertisements. Wecurrently spend close to $10,000 per year for the Rev and approximately$100 on the Website. We hope to utilize one to benefit the other andserve more of our members more effectively. Its gonna take a little time.We are working on it and will accept volunteers. Like how I alwayscome back to that line?

Speaking of advertisements we have also decided to make a one timeoffer. For the June Rev Record we will offer one free business card sizedad to any Western Ohio Region member. WHY? We, as a unit, orderthings all the time. We have to go to printers, we buy flowers, we orderpens, subs, pizza, pop, blank discs, paper, ink cartridges, trophies, t-shirts, tires, car stuff, fire bottles, safety stuff, orange gloves, white rain

NOTICE: This classified section isFREE to SCCA members. Yourad will be printed three times.*** indicates that your ad has appearedfor the final time.Nonmembers may advertise at the rateof $5.00 per month.

The SOLThe SOLThe SOLThe SOLThe SOLO II TO II TO II TO II TO II TechnicalechnicalechnicalechnicalechnicalInspection ProcessInspection ProcessInspection ProcessInspection ProcessInspection Process(Another what you always wanted to know, but ~)

With the Solo II season off to aslow start this year, its beenrather boring on the weekends. So, Ive had time to read thehandbook twice and evenshanghai someone into helpingme set up my suspension. However, thats not the reasonfor this article.

Let me introduce myself before Iget too carried away. I am GregStephenson, the Chief TechInspector for Solo II events herein the WOR. Im easy to find atautocross events, just look forthe big guy in the blue Neon, #72 ES. Ive been competing inSolo events for a relatively shorttime, this being my second year, but have previous experiencecompeting in Motorcross events.Although these two forms ofcompetition are worlds apart, they have one thing in common.Participants must have theirequipment inspected beforeeach event. This inspection canbe quick and painless ordownright annoying dependingon how the process works. Iwant to avoid the later byexplaining a bit about what toexpect at a typical Solo II techinspection. I will discuss howthe process can vary from oneevent to the next, and how Ihope to avoid these pitfalls soeveryone knows what to expectat every WOR Solo II event.

To accomplish this, let me firstexplain a bit about what a Solo IItech inspection involves. In theSolo II handbook, there areseventeen points that a Techinspector must look at to deter-mine the eligibility of any ve-hicle to compete. I wont re-print this list. You can find thechecklist in section 3.3.3 of the2000 Solo rulebook. In short, the

tech inspector checks to makesure the vehicle and driversafety equipment are in goodcondition and will performsafely and effectively in case of amishap. The checklist shouldalways be followed at a local, divisional, or national SOLOevent, regardless of where it isheld. As with any list followedby any individual, the way atech inspection is performedmay vary greatly from region toregion even event to event. For example, some people preferto line vehicles up in a singlelane, some in two lanes. Someregions have a sign denoting thetech area, some dont. Ive evenattended an event where thetech area was wherever Jim isstanding, whoever Jim was. Allof this can lead to confusion fora new driver or a visitor fromanother region.

I want to avoid this and geteveryone in and out of the techarea as quickly as possible soparticipants can enjoy the racemore and worry less about themechanics of the event. Thisshort list will help get you inand out of tech faster. It willalso earn you the admirationand eternal gratitude of everytech inspector you meet.

Clean out your car the nightbefore. If you remove the loosechange, the tapes and CDs thenight before, you wont have toworry about where to put it atthe track.Make sure to remove the floormats and other stuff youbrought for your day at thetrack from your vehicle beforeyou report for inspection. If you have your own numbersput them on before you come tothe tech area.Register for the event before youpull your car into tech lane.Make doubly sure you bringyour helmet with you for in-spection.

Pop your hood latch and trunklatch as soon as you get to techlane.Put your helmet in the driversseat and your inspection formunder it.

Those seven little things willmake the most of your time andultimately add to your enjoy-ment of the event.

Having said that, here are a fewthings that we will do at eachSolo II event to help speed upthe process:At registration time, you willreceive a tech inspection card. The tech inspector will use thiscard to sign off on your vehicle.Shoe polish or similar non-permanent marking materialmay be provided to participantswithout numbers or class identi-fication in a separate markinglane.A worker will be available toassist participants with anyvehicle classification or techquestions at all times during theinspection process.A colored sticker will be placedon your helmet and vehicle onceit has passed inspection toidentify approval. This will bedone at each event.Any vehicle without properpreparation, numbering andclass identification will not beinspected and will be requestedto exit the tech lane until it isproperly prepared. The tech lane will be wellmarked.

I hope I havent put you to sleepwith my rambling. If we all putjust a bit of effort into this, wecan have a smooth pre-eventprocess and ultimately moretime where we want it to be on the track!

RACING REALMRACING REALMRACING REALMRACING REALMRACING REALMWell I guess the first formula 1race has come and gone and bythe time you read this article thesecond will have been run also.In the first race who would havethought that McLaren wouldhave had both cars go out beforethe midway part of the race. Itall goes back to car prep andknowing what forces are goingto act on the car as my lastinstallment eluded . Dont getdown though, while McLarenhas millions to spend on cardevelopment and comes upshort at times doesnt mean thatyou will fail in your quest toimprove your cars abilities. AndI would say that McLaren willmake that pneumatic systemcorrection by the second race.Dont give up, is the only credothat works.

My intro does not get to thematters at hand though. First Iwould like to invite you to theannual tech at the ForeignExchange on April 15 from 10AM to 2 PM or until the last caris done with their inspection.Denis Powell will be there, withbells on, to provide you with allthe latest tech updates and 2000helmet stickers. Please plan onattending, even if you do nothave a car to be techd Im surethere will be some bench racinggoing on to learn something . Asyou have heard there will be abreakfast Rally to run on SundayJune 4th. It will be approximately60 miles long(about 1.5 hrs.) andwill be in a very scenic part ofthe Miami valley. Registrationwill start around 7:30 AM firstcar out will be around 8:15 AM.Breakfast will be about 10:00 AM.I still need some volunteers forcheck points and such. Give mea call or E-MAIL me if you

would like to help and do thesame if you plan on running orattending just to eat. Ill havemore on the menu and the feesat a later time and with any ofyour responses.

As promised in the last install-ment I will discuss car prepara-tion and try to answer anyquestions that are forwarded tome via E-MAIL or calls, lettersETC. I have not received anyquestions yet on what I dis-cussed last month or any newitems, so I will continue todiscuss basics of car preparationas I see them. I guess the nextsubject I would like to broach isbasic car handling and possibleremedies. So, you say your carundersteers or oversteers ordoesnt stop well or doesnt havegood traction out of the corners, orthe list goes on and on.The first step I would take is toset up a basic test track. A placethat you could make changes toyour suspension and see whathappens in a controlled environ-ment. A few people will sell yousome software to accomplishthis and I have used some ofthese to determine and definecertain characteristics of mysuspension. But, you do nothave to go to these lengths yet toget some very good repeatabledata. Setting up and using a skidpad can reveal most of yourcars true steady state handlingcharacteristics and give yourepeatable data without buying a$5000 data acquisition system.First, get yourself a flat uniformsurface piece of blacktop about300* 300 and draw a 100 radiuscircle that you can see whenyour driving. This gives you a200 diameter circle that is largeenough as not to induce slipangles on your tires that giveerroneous results and long

enough times around the circle tomeasure times accurately. Driveyour car around the circle as fastas you can keeping the centerlineof the car centered on the linethat you made. Time how long ittakes to go around the circle andcalculate your lateral acceleration. This is done by using this for-mula.LATERAL ACCELERATION=1.22* R/ LAP TIME SQUARED.Where R= radius measured infeet and time is measured inseconds. Now remember to goas fast as you can keeping thecar centered on the line. At somepoint your car will either under-steer off the line or oversteer offthe line and this will tell youwhat your car in a steady statewill do normally. So, lets say thatyou took 15 seconds to goaround the circle as fast as youcan. With the formula above youwould know that your car cangenerate .54 Gs of lateral accel-eration. Now this is not veryhigh( remember the higher theGs the better your car is han-dling), but you have learned agreat deal from this one test.Lets say that when you reachedyour maximum speed aroundthe skid pad your car went offline in understeer (push). Whatcould you do to make your cargo faster before it understeeredoff the line. This is where thingsget to be quite challenging tomost novices and to someveterans. The trick is to makechanges to your car that willimprove its performance whilenot choosing a change that willhamper its performance. Ill tryto clarify that statement. Lets sayyour car is understeering, oneway of making the car udersteerless is to put more weight on thefront tires and one way to dothis is to raise the rear of the car

OK! Who the heck is asking for all this rain? I realize this small segmentof the earth may need the moisture, but does it have to always arrive onSunday?

I was really hoping to report on the first autocross of the year in thisissue but the race gods are against me. The first, original Test and Tuneevent scheduled for March 12th was snowed out following a week ofglorious spring like weather. Thinking I could fool those devious eventgremlins, I quickly rescheduled the gathering for the following week,March 19th. I crossed all my Ts and dotted my Is but to no avail. Ieven begged Christie to hold the Rev publication until Monday the 20th,just so I could get in a positive report. Unfortunately, when Sundayrolled around, it was solid rain with cold temperatures just for spite. By9AM only a handful of cars had arrived. In all honesty we didnt haveenough people show up to work the event, so sadly, we cancelled again.A few diehards went to Perkins for breakfast and managed to have adecent, fun time in defiance of our enormous disappointment.

Despite having to report the unfavorable news of cancelled events; thereis fortuitous information. Our Web pages are progressing nicely and theLISTSERV mail group on Topica.com has grown to 36 subscribers. Infact, there were four individuals, new to autocross that braved theweather for a chance to join us at KilKare for the Test and Tune. All theinformation they received about our program came from the messagespassing back and forth on the mail list. Please continue to pass the wordabout this group. It is the best way to get information about events andto stay updated for last minute changes. To subscribe, send a blank e-mail to:[email protected]. The server will respond auto-matically with a confirmation mailing. You MUST reply to this mailingto be added to the list.

While on the subject of race information, getting the word out at the lastminute is difficult at best. Greg and Tracey Stephenson have done awonderful job updating the Web page and posting messages to the maillist at the very last minute. In the future (actually I started it with the2nd cancelled Test and Tune event), I will have a voice mail message onmy cell telephone with the absolute latest information on the event. Thismessage will only be there the day of the race; however, if you have anyquestions as to the status of the event, call (937) 604-1671.

I am hoping that by the time you read this article, the Drivers School, and first points event at the Veterans Administration Center will behistory with a gratifying turn out of participants.

Beside this article you will find changes to the Supplemental Regulationspublished last month. As Murphy always predicted, we proof read thedocument many times; however, once it went to print, we discoveredthings needing changed. Please note the changes as some are important, while others are clerical in nature.

The next points event is scheduled for April 16th at the VA Center. Seeyou there!

THE ASSISTANTRE REPORTI need your help! Against theadvice and wishes of more thana few of you members I havedecided to volunteer for theposition of WOR Games Chair-man. I have some very limitedexperience as qualifications forthis position. I served asASSistant race chairman of theSpring Workout at IRP to Daveand Sherri Schardt. I did notget a lot of organization experi-ence as they had already doneall the work and very capablytoo I might add. I have raced inmany regional and national clubraces and I know what I like at arace and what I dont like. Iintend to apply what I like tomake this years WOR Games asenjoyable as possible for thedrivers. I like to hang aroundwith the stewards and theworkers as much as possible andhave some idea about what theydo and what makes them happy. However I admit that I needmore input from them to betterunderstand what they thinkmakes a successful weekend. Sowhat I am asking of you mem-bers is to give me as much inputas possible concerning thisyears WOR Games. I also needas many of you as possible tovolunteer to help out at the raceor before the race with jobpositions and organization. Havefun and go fast!

( coilover shocks). While this will help your understeer your total grip willdecrease to some extent because you raised your cars center of gravity androll center. Your times will come down but they could have been improvedmore with some other change. I will not get too technical here because ofspace and knowledge but, if you would have raised your tire pressure inthe rear tires or increased your rear sway bar rate (stiffer/bigger) you coulddo the same thing without hampering the other facets of your cars suspen-sion geometry. So, you choose to put a couple of pounds of air in your reartires (which increases your total spring wheel rate) which increases yourweight transfer by increasing the rear roll stiffness and lowers your timearound the skid pad to 12 seconds. Now you have increased your lateralacceleration to .85 Gs. Thats a pretty big change for a couple of pound offree air and not common, but it gives you the idea of what some changeswill do to your handling. You could do the same thing with changing tiresor sway bars or a myriad of other changes that you can make. All of which Icannot discuss at this time, but suffice to say there are at least 10 changes tomake your car understeer less. Another couple of things to remember. Donot make more than one change at a time, that way you know what differ-ence each change made and in the case of using a skid pad, test the car inboth directions and average the times. Unless you have a formula car theGs you will be able to pull will be different in each direction. This comesfrom the fact that a normal street car will weigh more on one side than theother ( your body weight). Here are a couple of changes, but not all, tomake when your car is understeering.1. Increase weight transfer at the rear by increasing rear roll stiffness.2. Reduce weight transfer on the front by reducing front roll stiffness3. Reduce front toe-in4. Increase front aerodynamic down force on the front tires (wing)5. Reduce aerodynamic down force on the rear tires (wing)6. Use wider front tires

To reduce oversteer the opposite can be done.

This is not a complete listing of what can be done, but it is a start. I guessthats about it for now on this subject but more will follow that ties intothis subject matter and more upon that. For the sport!

CENDIV Workers/Stewards SeminarI attended the CENDIV Workers/Stewards Seminar last weekend inSouth Bend, Indiana. The one thing that I have learned in attending theseminars and conferences is that there are a lot of friendly people outthere sharing our need and desires for more friendly people. The repre-sentatives from OVR and NEOHIO welcomed us into their midst

Let us in on techniques and treasures that they use to run their respec-tive regions. We shared race stories, membership ideas, beer, rallyreviews, beer, dinner, jokes, how to improve this and that stories, morebeer... It was very informative and a LOT of fun. I left the week-endpromising to work races at Nelson Ledges, Mid-Ohio, Grattan andGingerman. Im not sure how that all happened. I think it might havehad something to do with the beer. Anyway, thats how Ill be spendinga portion of MY summer. Sounds like fun and it will help us get a fewmore workers for the WOR games. If anyone is interested in going toany of those events with me, give me a call.

One of the things that I have been working on that I picked up from theNEOHIO folks was a one page pamphlet that gives a brief description ofwhat Western Ohio SCCA is. It is used to present information to pro-spective members at Solo events, races, car shows, etc. I relayed all ofthis to the Board and was reminded that Paxton had put something likethat together some years back. Linda Smiley shared one of them withme and using that and the sample from NEOHIO, I was hoping to haveit done as a pull out for this publication. NOT. I will have it at the nextBoard meeting to review with Noel and everyone for their imput. Weshould be able to get it completed to pass out at the next general mem-bership meeting. If you have comments or suggestions or would like tohelp, give one of us a call.
