2015-16 BOARD AND COMMITTEE ORIENTATION
NOT JUST FOR NEW BOARD MEMBERS!
On Wednesday, June 10th, 7:00 p.m., Rev. Mimi Biedron will
introduce the coming program year’s theme, review highlights and special events that
are on the calendar, and share other news important to ALL BOARD AND COMMIT-
TEE MEMBERS! Business Manager/Program Director Danny Hawkins will review
several processes, and we’ll distribute this year’s North Church Handbook, hot off the
press, with lots of important reference information about roles, practices, policies, and
more.
PLEASE PLAN TO COME TO THIS IMPORTANT HALF-HOUR MEETING,
even if you aren’t a newcomer to North Church leadership or your board isn’t meeting
that evening! Sign up outside Fellowship Hall or by email to Danny Hawkins at
“Worshiping God, Serving Humanity”
We are gathered for worship of God and service to humanity.
From the Minister… I’m writing this letter a couple of days
before I go down to Delaware, Ohio, to graduate
from a six year program at Methodist Theologi-
cal School in Ohio with my Doctor of Ministry
(D.Min.) degree. It’s been a long and challeng-
ing experience, and I’ve learned so much that I
have already put to work in the life of the church! My doctoral topic was decision
making in the church. The project which formed my thesis was the design of a ro-
tating discussion model which allows a church to gather, consider where God has
led us, and invite the Holy Spirit to take part as participants approach important
topics in a series of conversations. The results of these collaborative conversations
are gathered to provide a field of responses and thoughts ahead of the formal pro-
cess, so that the whole church can contribute insights to be used by leadership in
approaching important decisions. Last June, North Church members took part in
the first test of this process; this year, I’m preparing it for other Congregational
churches to try so that I can further refine the method. A copy of my doctoral thesis
will be in the church library for those interested in seeing the project in its full re-
search context.
I cannot thank you, the members and friends of North Church, enough for
your support, encouragement, and help in this process. I see this, in important
ways, as OUR achievement, not just mine alone. The process I developed will ben-
efit other congregations, but it was originally created very intentionally for this
family of faith. As we approach the ministries, missions, and decisions of the com-
ing program year, I look forward to the collaboration that has always been a dis-
tinctive feature of the Congregational Way. Even more importantly as we begin the
month of June, I’m looking forward to a party! Hope to
see many of you there.
With lots of love and gratitude,
Rev. Dr. Mary E. Biedron
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CONGREGATIONAL CHRISTIAN CHURCHES’
2015 ANNUAL MEETING AND CONFERENCE
June 20-23, 2015 is the date and Salt Lake City is the place for this year’s annual
gathering of delegates and members of Congregational Churches from all over the Unit-
ed States. The business portion of this meeting will review and renew support for minis-
terial students and missions, welcome new congregations to our fellowship, and hear
reports from the Ministry Councils that provide services to our churches: Vitality,
Missions, and Growth. Missionaries from many of the worldwide programs supported by
the NACCC will be present, as will representatives of affiliated organizations such as the
Congregational Library, Olivet and Piedmont Colleges, and more.
Our North Church Delegate to this meeting (and year-round delegate as well) is
Dottie Kendall; she will be joined at the meeting by Alternate Delegate Dave Pniewski
and Mimi Biedron; Judy Campbell will be present in her role as the Secretary of the
NACCC. To learn more about the NACCC, to read reports from the meeting and see any
live streams, see the website, naccc.org.
We will be watching this meeting closely, as the Southeast Michigan Association of
Congregational Churches (of which North Church is a member) is the host for the 2016
Annual Meeting and Conference to be held in Dearborn on June 25-28, 2016. There
will be lots more news to come on that topic, and many opportunities to volunteer!
We will celebrate Communion on Sunday, June 7th.
RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS
On Sunday, June 7th, we’ll be welcoming new members into our fellowship.
This is always a joyous occasion! If you are interested in joining in the covenant
of North Church, or knowing more about church membership, please speak with
Rev. Mimi Biedron, and plan to be present on June 7th!

another book in the July newsletter & plan to come discuss
them all on Wednesday, August 19th at 1PM.
PILGRIM FELLOWSHIP
We’re planning two service projects for this
summer: South Oakland Shelter and construction of
a park from an empty lot in Pontiac, in cooperation
with several other church youth groups.
It also just wouldn’t be summer without a trip to Cedar Point; please let
Rev. Mimi know your availability – weekday or weekend? Which dates
are out?—so that we can make plans!
PARK PROJECT: Several times this summer, we will join students from
First Presbyterian Church of Farmington and Pine Hill Congregational
Church to transform an empty lot into a park in downtown Pontiac! Partici-
pants will help to till the ground, lay out the park design, plant, and weed.
We’ll work for 2-3 hours each time.
OUR FIRST OUTING WILL BE THE MORNING OF SATURDAY,
JUNE 13, meet at the church at 8:45 a.m. and head up to the site at 9; we’ll
be back at the church lot at noon. Get up early and help make a difference!
PLEASE SIGN UP FOR THIS ACTIVITY; WE WILL NEED A PER-
MISSION FORM SIGNED BY THE STUDENT AND A PARENT/
GUARDIAN. Questions? Contact Rev. Mimi at church or by email.
SOUTH OAKLAND SHELTER: North Church is hosting the clients of
SOS August 23-30. There will be work to prepare to welcome these fami-
lies and individuals to our church, as well as during the SOS week. Watch
for more or contact Danny Hawkins to find out about volunteering; this is
an all-church project for North, with early morning and evening time slots
(clients leave the church during the daytime). Help us help!!

A BIG CROP HUNGER
WALK “THANK YOU!”
Our 2015 CROP
Hunger Walk featured
226 walkers who raised
over $26,000 on walk
day, with more dona-
tions coming in online
and as post-walk donations. North
Church had 15 walkers and a walk
day total of $1,420; we have already
raised more than that, and it’s not too
late to make a donation online at
crophungerwalk.org, or by dropping
off a check at the church office made
out to CWS/CROP .
Funds raised by this walk are
managed by Church World Service,
and are divided among national and
international hunger and emergency
relief projects, with 25% of the total
from the Walk coming back to our
local hunger relief agencies: the
Baldwin Center in Pontiac, Neigh-
borhood House, St. Alexander’s
Food Cupboard, the Salvation Army,
and Yad Ezra Kosher Food Pantry.
Thanks for helping hungry peo-
ple around the world and in our part
of the world!!

MICHIGAN CONGREGATIONAL SUMMER CAMP
Camp Copneconic, Fenton, Michigan
Sunday, July 19 - Friday, July 24
When kids go to Summer Camp, everyone wins!
Parents win!
You'll know your kids are having a blast AND they're safe at the same time.
How often does that happen?
Kids with strong morals are more likely to take care of you when you're old.
Quiet time. Remember quiet time?
Camp lets kids test their boundaries and grow into their uniqueness.
Kids win!
It's fun!
You'll make friends for life.
You'll learn stuff that matters.
You'll get to do things you never get to do at home.
Did we mention that it's fun?
Things you will experience at camp:
Good food... with dance breaks!
Interesting Bible lessons
Crazy activities: ropes course, zip line, swimming or sailing, sports & games
A chance to connect with God
Nightly campfires
Mosquitoes. (Hey, it can't all be awesome or you'd never leave.)
Things you won't experience at camp:
Lectures
Old, dirty cabins
Television
Boredom
Camp Goals Our purpose is to help campers develop, through the Christian camping experience, a
knowledge of God, the Bible, and the life and teachings of Christ. Campers learn to live
together as Christians, growing in Christian responsibility, citizenship, and fellowship. It is
our prayer and hope that the lessons learned at camp will affect the lives of the campers
beyond their camping experience.
For more information and registration forms go to: MichiganCongregationalSummer-
Camp.org. Or ask for a paper copy from Danny or Rev. Mimi. North Church will provide
a $75 subsidy per camper making the net family cost $240 per camper, if registered by
June 1st.
North Congregational Church and the
2015 Greater Farmington Founders’ Festival
The Communications Committee has launched an initiative to have a North
Church presence at the 2015 Greater Farmington Founders’ Festival, which runs
July 16 to 19. The Founders’ Festival is a popular, family-friendly event. Our aim
is to continue to have an active presence in the community and share our mission
and values.
We will have a booth in the non-profit area at the Festival, which is behind the
Masonic Lodge. Working with the Festival Committee, we will be running a chil-
dren’s coloring contest. Dave Pniewski has been busy getting local businesses to
donate prizes, such as family meals, tickets to the Civic Theater, and passes at local
family entertainment venues. He has secured seven prize donations thus far with
more to come.
Judging of the entry drawings will be done by members of the Farmington
Hills Arts Commission and the Festival Committee.
North Church’s role, in addition to organizing the contest and prizes, will be to
staff our booth during the Festival. Children will be able to create and submit their
entries at the booth. We will have copies of our welcome brochure and our volun-
teers will be adorned in North Church tee shirts.
It should be a great event, in the tradition of our participation in the duck race.
Keep an eye out, we will be asking for volunteers to help with preparations and to
staff the booth during the Festival.
For more information (or to volunteer to assist) contact Kevin Gromley,
[email protected] or 248-474-2791.
Electronic Newsletters Update Our monthly newsletter is an important means of communicating with our members. We want everybody to have access to it. That said, printing and mailing paper copies takes considerable effort and cost. Our office staff takes about 4.5 hours each month printing, stuffing and mailing the newsletter (this is in addition to the many more hours creating the newsletter). The paper, printing and mailing costs are about $ 1935.00 annually. The Communications Committee’s social media survey showed about two thirds of the respondents indicated that they would be fine with an electronic copy. Consequently, we have decided to transition away from the bulk mailing of newsletters to every parishioner’s home, with the last bulk mailing being the August 2015 Newsletter. If you prefer a printed copy of the newsletter be mailed, first class, to your home, please indicate that preference in one of three ways.
1. Email Danny Hawkins at [email protected] 2. Phone the church office, 248/848-1750 3. Complete the form below, then mail it to, or drop it at, the office
NAME: ____________________________________ Please mail me a copy of the newsletter each month
You will also have the option of picking up a printed copy at church whenever you are in the building.
The Music of the Music Man The May 1st Music fundraiser dinner and a show raised a total of $5,281.90
for the Music Restricted fund which is used to supplement the music budget by pay-
ing for special items such as the brass ensemble which accompanies the chancel
choir on Easter. We hosted 120 people for dinner where 24 items sold in the silent
auction for a total of $3,643.00. The show, enjoyed by 170 paid attendees, featured
the Chancel Choir, ensembles and soloists from North Church celebrating the music
of the Tony winning Broadway play “The Music Man” by Meredith Wilson. This
year’s show was the most successful music fundraiser to date, raising 33% more
money than last year’s show.
Special thanks to these people who donated items (some more than one) to
the Silent Auction for the Music Fundraiser.

NEWS FROM THE
BOARD OF RELIGIOUS
EDUCATION The Board of Religious Education
has some exciting news. We would like
to welcome our new inductees, Pam
White and Celeste Schwartz, to our
board. We look forward to your many
wonderful ideas and input to continue to
grow our education foundation for North
Church.
We would also like to announce that
the BRE has added Abby Turner as a
junior board member. Abby will be our
first representative in this capacity. As a
junior member, Abby will sit along side
other members in monthly meetings and
contribute as a full member with the posi-
tion being a 1-year term only. We are so
excited to welcome her and look forward
to this new perspective, and all the great
ideas she will bring to our already won-
derful committee. We also want all other
confirmed Pilgrim Fellowship members
to know that this is an open position and
we look forward to working with others
in the future.
If you would like more information
on how to get involved, please contact
any BRE member. We would be happy
to get you more information.
BUILDING
MAINTENANCE
Your help is requested!
All buildings have mainte-
nance issues that arise from
time to time. Our church build-
ing is no exception!
Please advise us when you
notice something
broken, leaking, or if
something has fallen
off, needs to be re-
paired or replaced, or
isn’t heating or cooling, or
closing...by writing it down on
one of the maintenance report
slips and returning it to the
church office.
The report slips may be
found on the Information Table
outside Fellowship Hall, on the
main table in the Sunday
School Wing, and in the Re-
source Room in the office.
