Tour Information

Flights Our flights are being still to be confirmed. All flights are subject to change. The operator will provide the group with meals during international flights. Inside US flights have food available for purchase in-flight.

On all flights, our students will be seated together as one group in the economy cabin.

Transport Domestic transfers have been arranged locally, using American providers with a mix of public and private transport.

Where possible, we will use local transport including inter-city trains, local subway systems, harbour ferries, cable-cars and local buses. Not all buses are fitted with seatbelts in the United States as laws vary from state to state. All local transport charges have been included in the tour cost.

Accommodation Our accommodation will be in IHG branded hotels. All our hotels have been chosen for their proximity to transport links, safety, and their suitability for travel with school students. Standards of hotel rooms may vary and are beyond our control. All our hotels will have complimentary WiFi internet connection.

Accommodation will be arranged on a twin-share basis. All rooms will have a private bathroom. Students will be asked for preferences for rooming lists, but this cannot be guaranteed. Students will be allocated a different room-mate in each of the 6 cities to ensure that group dynamics remain positive.

Luggage Students may bring 1 item of checked baggage not exceeding 23kg, and 1 item of cabin baggage not exceeding 7kg. An additional luggage allowance may be purchased directly from the airlines at check-in. Students will be personally responsible for any luggage charges imposed by airlines. Students should ensure that their luggage is lockable and tamper-proof. If a student chooses to lock their luggage they must use TSA-approved locks.

Students will be expected to carry their own luggage at various times during the trip and for this reason we recommend they pack lightly. We recommend that all students pack biodegradable laundry soap so they can hand-wash items of clothing and minimise the weight of their luggage. Four of our hotels have laundry rooms with washing machines.

We expect that most students will purchase items during the tour and will invariably come back with more than they left. Keep this in mind when packing. Students are responsible for ensuring their checked luggage and hand luggage meet with Australian aviation, customs and quarantine laws.

Meals Although we will try to meet special dietary requirements, this cannot always be guaranteed. Every reasonable attempt will be made to accommodate students with dietary requests however from time-to-time this may be beyond our control.

Breakfasts will be provided for all our overnight hotel stays. There will be 6 group dinners included in the tour itinerary, where we will all dine together. Students will be responsible for organising and paying for all of their lunches and several dinners. Most of these meals will be “walkabout meals”, where students will order and pay for their own food in the immediate vicinity of our day activity. We recommend students allow around $350USD to purchase meals and snacks. Students will be briefed on food safety and hygiene before departure.

Insurance Comprehensive travel insurance has been included in the cost of the tour.

Insurance is provided by a third party and parents and students should read the Product Disclosure Statement provided by the Tour Leader.

This insurance policy becomes effective from 5 May 2020.

Spending Money Students should allow a small amount of spending money for local purchases and souvenirs. Australian Visa/Mastercards are accepted in the US, however access is not always guaranteed. Do not rely on cards alone as a source of funds; we recommend a mix of cash and cards. Australian currency (notes can be exchanged at airports and train stations.

Free Time In certain destinations, students will be given free time to explore local attractions for themselves. The students will be given a meeting point and time and be allowed to disperse in small groups to explore the local area attractions.

During free time, a member of staff will always remain accessible to students for any emergencies. We strongly recommend that students bring their mobile phone for emergency use.

Shopping All purchases will be subjected to aviation and Australian customs and quarantine inspections. Students are responsible for ensuring purchases comply with Australian laws. They will be briefed on this prior to the return flight.

Student Wellbeing Students must attend the compulsory pre-departure safety briefing to be held on Tuesday 5 May, 2020.

Although the United States is considered a safe destination and there are no significant risks associated with travel there, students will always need to be mindful of their own personal safety. Staff will take reasonable steps to ensure student safety. Students will be briefed about travel safety prior to departure.

The tour requires a moderate level of fitness as it includes a number of physical activities. Students must be moderately fit, able to carry their own luggage for an extended period of time and be willing to participate in all group activities.

Some students may experience travel illnesses when they first arrive due to a change in diet and climate. We recommend all students be prepared for such an occurrence and bring incidental medical supplies. Such issues are usually short-lived.

Students with allergies should seek medical advice before traveling. Students carrying prescription medication are asked to include a written prescription or Doctor’s note to avoid confusion at customs.

Please be aware that no TSS staff member can administer any type of medicine or drug to a student, including headache tablets. Should a student become unwell during the tour, staff will make a decision as to whether to take a student to local medical facilities. Staff will always carry a first-aid kit for emergency use.

Passports & Visas Students require an Australian passport with a minimum 12 months validity to complete the tour. Students will need to present their passport to the Tour Leader on the first day of term two 2020 for visa waivers to be completed.

Passports will be cared for by TSS staff throughout the tour. Students who do not hold an Australian passport may require a visa to visit the US. This will be the responsibility of the parents/guardians of the student. Student behaviour and conduct This tour is an extension of the normal learning environment of TSS and as such, normal TSS expectations for behaviour and conduct will apply.

Normal TSS expectations on drugs and alcohol will be strictly enforced. Any student whose behaviour fails to meet these expectations will face consequences, up to and including a forced return to TSS. Such an event will occur after consultation with the Deputy Headmaster and will be at the cost of the parents of the student. Please consider that the USA can be a conservative society and that sensitivity needs to be shown towards local culture and customs. Boys will be briefed on this prior to departure.
