STEVE PENNV USA GYMNASTICS

PRESIDENT

Dear USA Gymnastics Members:

The first big event of the year has taken place and we are underway with the new FIG Code of Points. The Tyson American Cup showcased some of the best gymnasts in the world. Needless to say, the results for USA Gymnastics were fantastic as our athletes demonstrated their commitment to remain among the top countries.

Congratulations to Nastia Liukin and Jonathan Horton on their all-around victories at the Tyson American Cup, as well as Shayla Worley (2nd) and David Durante (3rd ). The performances of these athletes as well as the other USA Gymnastics team members were outstanding.

While there is certainly going to be an adjustment period to the new FIG Code, it should not deter anyone's enthusiasm for being a fan of gymnastics. What truly matters is the amazing performances of the athletes, and their correct placement at the end of the competition. The challenge lies in developing routines to maximize

each gymnast's score through careful balance of the difficulty and the execution of the elements. USA Gymnastics is poised to address this challenge with some of the most qualified coaches and most talented athletes in the world.

It is exciting to welcome Tyson Foods and AT&T to our family of corporate sponsors. Both of these companies offer limitless possibilities for partnership in marketing the sport of gymnastics and growing its popularity.

Tyson Foods returns to partner with USA Gymnastics as the title sponsor of the Tyson American _ Cup while expanding other • grassroots initiatives with a particular emphasis on nutrition

and fitness . You may have noticed the gymnastics-themed television commercial that aired during the Tyson American Cup. Tyson also conducted a promotion that allowed some lucky winners to sit on the competition floor during the last rotation of the Tyson American Cup with World Champion Chellsie Memmel. USA Gymnastics is proud to be powered by Tyson Foods as we head into the next few years.

AT&T has been a long-standing U.s. Olympic Committee sponsor and provides outstanding resources in the area of telecommunications. We look forward to using technology that benefits our members in cooperation with AT&T.

As we head into the Junior Olympic regional and national championship season, I want to wish all of the athletes and coaches the best of luck as you prepare for these important events. These annual showcases of the top competitors in the United States are significant opportunities for many athletes.

Please mark your calendars for April 16, Easter Sunday, when NBC Sports will televise the Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships from Honolulu, Hawaii.

See you in the gym,

Steve Penny President

food is yummy, you'll come back! But that tends to add up to a lot of extra calories you weren't counting on.

And speaking of extras, how about all those extra nibbles: appetizers, warm bread with pots of cool butter, beverage specials? Most families simply don't have all those extras with regular home meals.

Yet those extras can have even more calories than your meals! An order of buffalo wings with blue cheese dressing? That's a tidy 1,010 calories before dinner. For a fried onion blossom with dip, figure around 2,000. Even a basket of garlic bread is about 800 calories.

Cf)l~rI~~Thgen YIOU get to the main ~ attraction, and the

major problem with dining ou tportion size!

~;;;;;;;;~;;~~::::=::;~~~~~~~~~~ Restaurant meals

With two

out of three

Americans

overweight today,

it's getting harder

to believe that all this

extra fat is a simple problem of self

indulgence or poor personal discipline.

In fact, researchers and clinicians from various sciences say unequivocally that it's not. Certainly adults are responsible for what they put in their mouths. But when so many are affected, from across the entire American demographic, we also have to look at what's going on in our culture at large.

One thing is there's a lot more going out. In 1978, just 18 percent of the calories Americans consumed were eaten away from home. But by 2003, that was up to half. Why should that even matter? A calorie is a calorie, right?

At the bottom line, yes. The trouble is that when we eat out, we simply have much less control over what ends up on our plates, and from there, on our bottom line. That shows up in a variety of ways. Nutritional research indicates that for almost any given dish that you might choose to prepare at home, when it's compared to a restaurant dish of the same name, it's often not the same thing at all. So even trying to consciously select what looks like the healthiest choice on the menu might not do you much good.

Restaurants tend to use more oils and fats, more sugar, and more salt in their food preparations. The reason is simple: if the

28 USA GYMNASTICS MARC~/ADRI L 2006

are often three to four times larger than a normal serving size. Even plates, glassware and utensils

have grown. Very often, the dinner plate you get in a restaurant would qualify as a platter in any home kitchen, but then, they have to be bigger to accommodate those super servings!

It wouldn't be such an issue if we were better at walking away. An old adage about fitness says that the most important exercise to do is "pushbacks," meaning, when you've had enough, push back and get up from the table. Research shows Americans in general tend to be "completers," and many of us were raised to feel a sense of guilt if we left food on our plates.

The truth is, no matter how we're raised or whether we're slim or fat, if more is put in front of us we'll eat more, period. And that's not all. Research shows that as we become accustomed to those mega-sized meals we're presented in restaurants, we tend to prepare bigger portions at home, as well. We may not use all the extra oil, salt and sugar that restaurants do, but we're certainly having more of our main ingredients, and we're eating big and hearty.

The other thing that restaurants have over the home meal is variety. Even the most accommodating home cook typically won't make a different special meal for each member of the family. Again, the nutritional research shows that the more variety you can have, the more you'll eat overall.

United States Department of Agriculture studies show that when offered three varieties of a given food item-say, sandwiches or cookies-people would eat more than if they were offered three items of the same variety. That's part of why those all-you-can-eat buffets are such a caloric catastrophe.

Given the demands of today's busy lifestyles, dining out is not only a pleasure, but a time-saving survival tool. Restaurants may eventually be required to provide nutritional facts for their meals, but even without hard numbers, awareness of the pitfalls can go a long way toward helping us control those calorie counts.

We just need to think about what we're up against when someone else is cooking, so that when we're eating out, we're not taking so much in.

Gymnastics is a sport that I truly love. I like going to the gym and training. It's fun for me to be with my family and friends doing something that I enjoy. Growing up, I never felt that I had to give something up because of gymnastics. I did all the things other little girls do. I went over to friends' houses to play, went to birthday parties and sleep overs (although not on a meet weekend!), swimming, tubing, t-ball, miniature golf, bike riding, etc. In the winter I went sledding, snowmobiling and ice skating. Even now, I still hang out and have fun with my friends. Sure I miss out on a few things because I'm traveling or at camp but it's because I'm doing what I love to do. I get to experience a lot of things most kids don' t get to do like traveling around the world representing my country!

Since I won the all-around at the World Championships, things have gotten a little busier having to add interviews and appearances to my schedule. I just have to work harder at managing my time for school, training, phYSical therapy and social time. It's been really fun since Worlds. I've gotten a lot of community support. I didn' t realize how many fans I really have. I've been a guest of honor at a Milwaukee Bucks basketball game, a Milwaukee Wave soccer game and a Marquette basketball game. I was able to invite some friends along so it gave us an opportunity for a fun night out!

Since I was little, I have always dreamed of being a World Champion. Because my parents own a gym, I have had the privilege to watch and see high-level competition my entire life. I knew I wanted to be one of those elite champions some day. Making the national team at age 10 was really exciting for me. Training at the National Training

Center with my USA teammates is awesome. I not only have friends at home, I have friends all over the country because of gymnastics!

I wouldn't trade my life for anything. Not even the untimely injuries! The way I look at it -injuries are going to happen whether you're a gymnast or not. You could fall off a bike or out of a tree or have an accident. I've learned to look at my injuries as a challenge to come back and be stronger and better; to keep positive while doing my therapy and rehab; and stay focused to keep going in this sport!

I feel that I live a relatively normal life. I go to public school, do homework, hang out with my friends, go to movies, school functions, sporting events and dances. I just happen to be gone for weeks at a time for gymnastics. I feel very fortunate that I can see the world through a sport that I love to do.

Who wants to see another first?

The people of Chevron know about being first. Chevron was the first to be designated

TOPTIER gasoline by BMW, GM, Honda and Toyota. So it makes sense that Chevron has been,

and will continue to be, a proud sponsor of U.s.A. Gymnastics, a team that tirelessly strives

for top tier performance. Their success is inspirational and we wish them all the best.
