Diane Sills and Grace Grace is a 2 year old Pomeranian. Grace was very shy when she began her training. Through the work of the USA TD trainers she was able to overcome her fears and now loves being with others and is an excellent therapy dog. Through personal experience I realized the importance of therapy dogs and I wanted to have one. I was in an auto accident and hospitalized for 3 months. I lost memory and cognitive skills. I was un-responsive, yet very agitated in my actions. My mother said that she would put my hand on the dogs and stroke them. She said after the visits I would be less agitated and sleep, which then gave her a needed break so she could leave the room for a while. As time went on and I became alert, I looked forward to the visits and it helped me to get my mind off of myself. It gave me joy and happiness that I needed so very much. There are benefits to the people who seem non-responsive in addi-tion to those who are alert and responsive, so remember that when visit-ing. Thank you USA Therapy Dog, Inc., trainers and staff for providing the service so we and our dogs can provide support to those in need.

Sherrill Natzke and Teddy Our golden retriever, Bear, had been with our family for nearly 15 years and had passed away after a long and happy life. He was indeed special but the hurt of losing him was devastating and I swore to never go through that pain again. After a few months I wanted to fill that void in our lives since my sons were through college and had homes of their own now. My husband and I carefully decided on a mini-golden doodle we named Teddy. Teddy is extremely smart (like a poodle) and so loving (like a golden). He was a hit wherever we took him. He loved being around people and learning new things came easily for him. It seemed selfish to keep Teddy all to ourselves since he seemed to have a special gift for making people want to be around him. We met an extremely talented trainer named Gerri at a local pet store where Teddy was in classes for learning new skills. Teddy and I very much looked forward to our days with Gerri. Gerri told me that she thought Teddy would make a great Therapy Dog and proceeded to tell me more about it. And to make a long story short, we came to a meeting and it's been one of the best things we've ever done. After graduation, Teddy was a regular at Central Elementary in Davison. He loves working with children and seemed to be drawn to those who had learning disabilities. I am marketer for a large pharmacy and Teddy often went to work with me. He spent a lot of time in my office with patients visiting. He went on regular visits to several group homes and assisted living facilities that I went to for my job. I always told my boss that Teddy needed a pay check since he brought in so much busi-ness too! Teddy and I moved to our Florida home last summer where I still work in the same field, as does Teddy. While I truly miss our USA Therapy Dog family, Teddy is even more popular than ever here and has really grown into his role as a therapy dog. We visit many homes here and are regulars on Saturday mornings at our local clubhouse for "Teddy Time" after break-fast is done. He regularly attends concerts where he thinks everyone has come to see him...especially when they clap :-) I'm currently working on a series of books called "Teddy Time" that will not only help children learn more easily but inspire them to read more often. The monies from these books will be donated in to children's organizations and causes. Teddy will also soon have his own FaceBook Page too, so stay tuned. Thanks again to Gerri and all the wonderful USA Therapy Dog volunteers who bring so much joy to everyone. Teddy and I will be forever thankful~

Mindy Winter and Posh Posh is a parti-colored standard poodle whose main purpose is to find someone to snuggle and love on. She comes from a long line of therapy dogs in her background, and it‟s just part of who she is. Both Mindy and Posh enjoy working with people of all ages and are currently one of the active teams at a local hospital. They both enjoy spending time with the other dog members in the household and giving a little comfort to others along the way

Diane Noblett Rueger and Roxie

From the minute Diane received Rueger as a gift from her husband she knew he would make a great Therapy Dog. Rueger was a comfort to Diane while she was going through the long process of medical testing before being diag-nosed with Multiple Sclerosis. When Diane was asked why she wanted Rueger to become a therapy dog, she simply stated “I want other people going through physical challenges to receive the comfort and joy I do with Rueger”. Rueger is compassionate and senses the need to comfort someone who is not well. He also loves to show off his cute little tricks while visiting. Rueger is 9 1/2 years old and is also trained as a SERVICE dog for Diane. Roxie has a totally different personality than Rueger. Diane wasn‟t sure if she would be a good therapy dog, but went through the USA TD program to see what would happen. What a delightful outcome and a blessing to so many people. Roxie LOVES everyone. She makes the cutest little faces...like chomping her teeth (smiling) at everyone. She is always HAPPY; wiggling and wagging from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail. All Roxie wants is to love, it doesn‟t matter to her if you are sick or healthy, sad or happy, can read or not read, Roxie just knows how to love. She doesn‟t do tricks and isn‟t a show off like Rueger, but she sure has a way to make people open up and feel like the world is a wonderful place no matter what their circumstances. Roxie is 6 1/2 years old and has visited children at Long Meadow Elementary School in Rochester Hills, Central Elementary School in Davison, The Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders in Farmington Hills and has participated in the Less Stress Fest at Oakland University. Both Rueger and Roxie have gone on visits at McLaren in Flint, Suncrest in Lapeer, Stonegate Assisted Living in Lapeer. Diane volunteers to serve as Vice President and Communications Coordinator for USA Therapy Dogs, Inc.

Veronica Zador and Lily Lily is the only dog that lives in our household. Every day Lily visits our oldest daughter, Liza, her husband, Jason and their three children Andrew and Alexander (twins, age 8 ½) and Chloe (age 2 ½). Lily joins us when we drive to visit our youngest daughter, Lara, her partner, Erica, their dog, Paco (age 8) and two cats, Pinky and Lulu (age 4 and age 2, respectively). Lily loves her whole human and animal family and takes good care of everyone. She plays gently with the babies and we believe Lily feels all the children are actually her own. Lily responds to a firm „No‟ and we have never really had to discipline Lily with much more than that. One day, our daughter, Lara, spoke to us about the USA Therapy Dog organization. Lara is a physician in a hospital and noticed how visits from dogs made such a happy difference with her patients. Of course, we all thought how perfectly suited Lily would be for this job! And she is! We have so much to thank everyone involved with USA Therapy Dogs for their pa-tient, professional and courteous training. Lily and I learned so much about each other. We had wonderful classroom leaders to help us every step of the way. In the beginning, for example, Lily needed to learn how to adjust to other dogs in the room. After lots of practice and lots of patience we passed our final exam with grace. Graduation day is something we will always re-member with profound respect for the USA Therapy Dog teacher training team. THANK YOU!! One of Lily‟s favorite activities is visiting the residents and staff at Regent Street Senior Living Center / 4460 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield, MI 48323. Occasionally her friends bring special dog cookies and, of course, Lily remembers to say and extra Thank You with a handshake and a doggie kiss. Lily also enjoys her visits to meet people and make friends at Integrated Therapies (IT) / 30445 Northwestern Highway Ste. 330 / Farmington Hills, MI 48334. We are so happy to be a part of Lily‟s life. Having so many adventures with Lily is wonderful because it is a way to experience our love and respect for each other. Best of all, we make each other smile.

Barbara Horton-Wright and Allie I'm Barb, I'm married and have three grown children. I'm retired from General Motors. I work part-time in home health care. I love gardening, crafting, and spoiling my grand-daughters. Allie is a 5 yr. old Shih Tzu. She loves to play ball, run, and will do just about anything for cheese. I became interested in Therapy Dog handling a couple years ago. I have been working in home health care, and noticed clients really missed their animals. I knew Allie would be a great therapy dog because she was calm, friendly, and was a very quick learner. Allie was always a welcome site to several of my cli-ents. When two clients were put into care facilities, it just seemed like the time was right for getting certified. Then Allie and I could bring joy to more people. I'm very glad I chose USA Therapy Dogs, Inc. to certify. The people are great, the instructors do a good job, and I love the dogs too. I stay pretty busy but, I'm trying to organize my time so I can contribute more time to the events USA Therapy Dogs puts on. The organization feels like family. Thanks

Mike Binder w/Treasure & Diva Mike Binder loves working with the Saints and has been a USA member since Nov. 2010 with first dog, Treasure (on the left) Treasure is also an AKC Show Dog Champion in confor-mation. Mike then went thru program with second dog Diva (on the right) in 2011. Diva loves working with children. Both dogs love being therapy dogs and Mike likes helping out at events.

Diana Binder w/Daisy & Magnum Diana Loves spending time with all her Saint Bernards; became a USA member in November 2010 with Daisy (on the right) Daisy is also an AKC Show Dog Champion in conformation. Diana then went thru the USA TD program in 2011 with Magnum (on the left). Magnum is also a certified service dog, a retired show dog and a greeter for people who purchase their Saint Bernard puppies from West Wind Saints

Loki Malkowych & Alice Loki is a shepherd, chow, retriever, mix, who we adopted on September 20, 2003 through Animal Resource Network, Inc. out of Lansing MI. We chose him after searching through several pups on Petfinder.com. He was probably only about 6 or 7 weeks old at the time, but a big and lovable puppy! He took well to crate training, and subsequently, in January of 2004, went to „Boot Camp‟ at Common Scents Training Center in Or-tonville, under the direction of Steve Robinson. He enjoyed his stay there, and has since returned there several times for refresher obedience classes and just-for-fun, Agility classes. He still sleeps in his crate, although we‟ve taken the door off! When Loki first joined our family, he joined an aged, blind cocker spaniel. He soon grew much bigger than she, and even though much younger, he began to „foster‟ and guide her. When she passed, he was clearly saddened, and ironically, we feared he too might go blind! (for other reasons). We then adopted a white lab mix, who now is his best friend and playmate! I am happy to say, that Loki‟s eyes have been given a clean bill of health, with no concerns! His love and kindness is abundant amongst children, and elders alike! He makes regular visits to Martha T Berry Medical Facility in Mount Clemens, and often visits pa-tients in various hospitals. Some of his favorite hobbies, are hiking in the woods, playing with his friends, getting dressed up to go out J , playing on kid‟s jungle gyms, work-ing out, and most of all: being a USA THERAPY DOG !

Delena Austin, Cowboy and Wisdom Ranch My experiences in USA Therapy Dogs and with Animal Assisted Therapy have been life altering. My name is Delena Kay Austin. I‟m a professor at Macomb Community College in Health Science and Technology. I have a great job but something was always missing. I know I contribute to the lives of my students but it just didn‟t seem to be enough. I wanted to lift people up and to assist them on a more visceral level. And so, when I learned of USA Therapy Dogs at the Dog Bowl in Frankenmuth I was eager to sign up. Cowboy and I were in the first class that USA Therapy Dogs held in September of 2010. Cowboy is a funny golden retriever. He is somewhat overwhelmed in some situations but he is getting a lot more comfortable in his role as a therapy dog. I plan on bringing his brother, Scruffy (Toy Poodle), through the program soon to give him a bit of a break. Cowboy would rather be found by the pond with his tongue lolling or a stick in his mouth. Although he loves going out places with me I think that Scruff will become my go to therapy dog. As a therapy team Cowboy and I have been to hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. Overall Cowboy seems likes the reading program at John F Farrell Elementary the best. He loves kids and it is a mellow event that we attend every Wednesday from 3:35-4:25pm. I have been told that the kids reading test scores have improved since we have been coming. That is very gratifying to me as a teacher. I have had students that test at a third grade reading level come into my college classes. It is heart breaking to see them struggle without a basic education. If I can help kids escape this fate I am excited to do so. I am also new to the board of USATDs and am proud to serve the organization as the Marketing Coordinator. I really just wanted to make a difference in people‟s lives and to do something fun with my dog. I had no idea what kind of transition that this organization would cause in my life. I believe that there are times and events in your life that can change the path you have been going down as easily as a red light can turn green. Shortly after Cowboy and I became certified as the therapy team, I entered into the Animal Assisted Therapy Program at Oakland University. I graduated from the program last year. While in the program I started a non-profit organization called Wisdom Ranch-- Animal Assisted Education and Therapy Center (www.mywisdomranch.com). We are in operation in Imlay City, Michigan. Our first class was last summer and we had about eight kids from 7-13 years old. One little girl was adopted from China at two years of age and has a lot of sensory integration problems. Being at the barn was very overwhelming for her but when she was engaged in the ac-tivities with the animals she would sometimes forget to be afraid of the flies, the wind in her face, the ever present dirt and, of course, ma-nure. It was amazing to see her at peace for a few minutes as she ran around the horse pasture. That moment did not last for long but it was there. For a moment in time that she could just be another kid at the farm. She was relaxed and smiling and running through horse manure! Ordinarily these stimuli would send her into a serious melt-down. Of course this precious girl has a long way to go but we look forward to giving her more moments of freedom. I‟d love to tell you about our other students as they all are special to me but I know this is for a newsletter and not a novel! As we get closer to warmer weather I look forward to having USA Therapy Dog members out to the farm for an introduction into the world

of equine assisted education and therapy. I also will likely have need of dogs and handlers this summer to assist in our summer classes.

Please be on the lookout for an invitation and I will see you at the ranch!

Tony and Suzanne Hock with Tanq Tony and I were faced with the prospect of an empty nest so that is when we did the logical thing and that was to buy a puppy! We both wanted something to do to “give back”. We have been so blessed in our lives. We both loved the idea of the human animal bond and our new puppy turned out to be the key for us to get involved in a great program! As our puppy Tanq grew and went through training we discovered that he was a wonderfully sweet and calm dog that loved people. In our training classes he proved to be obedient and as we tackled agility training he loved it so much his tail wagged the whole time however, on his third time around he went over the jumps one paw at a time looking at us like he was saying “really” you want me to do all of this hard work yes Tanq is a lazy dog! That is when the instructor ap-proached and suggested that he would make a great therapy dog. And that was so exciting to Tony and I. It was our chance to work

with people and animals together and to give back. So we attended

USA Therapy Dogs became co handlers and have really enjoyed our

experiences. There isn‟t a hospital visit that we go on where we don‟t

see big smiles. And the stories have been so amazing. We also take

Tanq to the local library and the kids can‟t get enough of him! The

funny thing is people are always saying Bless you for the work you do

but really we are the ones getting the most out of the visits.

JULIE AND MACI AT STONEGATE, LAPEER FEBRUARY, 2013—MACI GIVING

JULIE A “HIGH FIVE”

Julie Allen & Maci Julie is a stay at home mom to three children in Davison, MI. Maci is a 5 year old Labradoodle. Julie was inspired to put Maci through therapy dog training because she wanted to be able to do something worthwhile with her free time while her children were in school dur-ing the day. She also had been told by a few friends that they felt Maci would make a great therapy dog because of her personali-ty. Julie and Maci graduated in November of 2011 and jumped right in to lots of visiting. They were able to log over 170 hours in 2012. This year they have two regular sites they are visiting so far. Maci enjoys visiting a 1st grade class at Central Elementary in Davison each week. She gets to lay on a blanket and let the children cuddle up next to her and read to her. She usually falls asleep while they are reading. They also visit Stonegate Assisted Living in Lapeer every other week. Maci loves letting the seniors pet her and Julie loves chatting with them. Julie has found that being a therapy dog handler is such a great opportunity to really help people. She also loves that Maci can have a purpose and give such joy to other people.

The same sheet can be used for both AKC visits and USA TD hours, just make sure the hours are stated on the form when sending to Diane Noblett at [email protected]. It is the Handlers responsibility to send in all the pertinent information to the AKC for their visits. All information is on the forms/guidelines. You can see USA Therapy Dogs, Inc. listed on the AKC website at: http://www.akc.org/akctherapydog/organizations.cfm
