Evolution
Industrialism
• Technology, in the form of railroads and other innovations that increased efficiency and communication, drove industrialism. Industrialism, in turn, created the wealth and impetus that drove the need for better technology. Technology became essential to American economic success.
• Industrialism attracted rural Americans and many European immigrants to cities in the United States. As a result, the U.S. shifted from an agrarian to an urban society. Immigration became a key ingredient in the success of industrialism, since immigrants were willing to work as cheap labor.
What USA used at that time?• The United States originally used horse-powered machinery to power its earliest
factories, but eventually switched to water power, with the consequence that industrialization was essentially limited to New England and the rest of the Northeastern United States, where fast-moving rivers were located.
The first cotton mill in America
• Thomas Somers and the Cabot Brothers founded the Beverly Cotton Manufactory in 1787, the first cotton mill in America, the largest cotton mill of its era, and a significant milestone in the research and development of cotton mills in the future
