Imperfect: Habitual Actions

Used to describe habitual or customary actions

It’s often used with expressions such as:

todos los días

generalmente

siempre

muchas veces

De niño,jugaba fútbol americano todos

los sábados.

Imperfect: Tell time

Used to tell time in the past Use with a time expression

Eran las seis y cuarto, cuando me desperté.

Imperfect: For Age

Used to express age in the past

Cuando tenía cuatro años, jugaba con mi osito de peluche.

Imperfect: Continuing Actions

Past actions seen as continuing or in progress

Hablaban mientras caminaban.

Imperfect: Ongoing Situations

Used when describing an ongoing situation.

Generally, possession and physical location are considered ongoing situations.

Tenía muchos amigos.

La bola de fútbol americano estaba en el jardín.

Imperfect: physical ,emotional or mental statesused when describing physical, emotionalor mental states.

Tenía dolor de cabeza.Yo lo amaba, pero el ya no me quería.

Estaba aburrido.

Imperfect and Preterite

The imperfect is frequently used to provide the background for other imperfect or preterite actions. It describes what was happening before other actions began.

Preterite vs. Imperfect

Sometimes you will need to use the imperfect and preterite in the same sentence.

hacía- use the imperfect to tell what was going on in the background.

sonó-use the preterite to describe the interrupting action or main event.

Yo hacía la tarea cuando sonó el teléfono.

Preterite Remember the preterite is used to express past

actions viewed as completed. Is used to focus attention on the beginning or the

end of a past action. Words which specify a limited time period are

frequently associated with the preterite like ayer el lunes el fin de semana pasado un día una vez
