CHAPTER 2 | WIRING INSTRUCTIONS

Infrared (IR) Strip Connections

NOTE: Prior to connecting the IR strips to the ENV-520USB, verify that the SG-506 power supply is switched off. Failure to do so may cause hardware damage.

The IR strips will be properly connected when the system is received from the factory. Except for adjusting the height of the IR strips, this wiring should not be changed, as the software relies on this configuration to accurately record data. If it is necessary to connect the IR strips to the ENV-520USB Controller, Figure 2-1 shows the labeling used to identify each IR strip. Each IR strip is connected to the corresponding port on the ENV-520USB Controller as shown in Figure 2-3 and Figure 2-4.

Use the Node Number Selector push buttons on the side of the ENV-520USB Controller to select each ENV-520USB Controller’s identification number. This ID number is displayed in the Node column of the ENV-520 Devices Properties screen. See the red arrows in Figure 2-2.

Figure 2-2 - ENV-520Devices Properties Screen

For reference, when looking at the Open Field Activity (OFA) Chamber from the front, the ENV-520USB Controller is in the back, right hand corner. In this position the X transmitter is in the front, the Y transmitter is on the right side in the lower position, and the Z transmitter is on the left side in the upper position. Receivers are located directly across the OFA chamber from their corresponding transmitters.

Connect the IR transmitters to the corresponding connectors on the ENV-520USB Controller using the ribbon cables with white connectors (CAB-ENV-256T for mouse, CAB-ENV-258T for rat). Only the ribbon cables with the white connectors will fit in the IR transmitters.

Connect IR receivers to the corresponding connectors on the ENV-520USB Controller using the ribbon cables with black connectors (CAB-ENV-256R for mouse, CAB-ENV258R for rat). Only the ribbon cables with the black connectors will fit in the IR receivers.

Figure 2-4 - IR Receiver Connections

Adjusting the Position of the IR Strips

The factory set positions of the IR strips may not be appropriate for all applications. Different ages and strains of subjects have different physical characteristics requiring adjustments be made to the IR strip locations.

The closer the IR strips are to the subjects' vertical center (for X & Y strips), the better the data. If the IR strips are too high, the subject may periodically drop below the IR strips, which may cause erroneous data.

The Z-axis IR strips should be placed in the lowest possible position capable of detecting vertical activity while not detecting normal activity on the X and Y-axes. If the Z-axis strips are too high, some rearings may not be detected, or slight "bouncing" while rearing may cause multiple rearings to be detected when only one rearing episode occurred.

To adjust the position of an IR strip, remove the thumbscrews on either end of the strip. Select the proper position for the strip and secure it in place using the thumbscrews. It is important to note that the strips should not be moved from one side of the chamber to another.

See the Hole Board Insert Installation and Wiring section for information on IR strip placement when using the hole board insert.

PC and Power Connections

Use the CAB-USB-AM-BM-15 USB (Figure 1-3) cable(s) to connect the ENV-520USB Controller (s) to any available USB port(s) on the PC. Multiple ENV-520USB Controllers may be used with the DIG-801 four port USB hub (supplied with starter packages or available separately), see Figure 2-5. When using the four port hub, use the DC power supply provided with the hub to power the hub. Activity Monitor 7 will support up to 16 ENV-520USB Controllers.

The SG-506 power supply is connected to the ENV-520USB Controller with the SG-520USB-1 (Figure 1-4) and SG-520USB-2 (Figure 1-5) power cables.

CHAPTER 3 | OPTIONAL HARDWARE

SAC Fan and Light Connections

If the system includes optional Sound-Attenuating Cubicles (SACs), the fans and lights are wired as follows (all cables should be run through the grommet plate on the side of the SAC):

Fan Connections

1. Connect the fan in Chamber 1 to the SG-235PF-6 6’ Y-Cable, as shown below.

2. Connect the SG-235PF-6 6’ Y-Cable cable to the desired power connector on the SG-500T Power Supply. Connectors 1 and 2 are switched outputs and 3 and 4 are always on.

3. Up to three additional Chambers can be connected as shown below using the SG-235PF-3 3’ Y-Cable.

Light Connections

1. Connect the lights in Chamber 1 to the SG-216C Y-Adapter Cable.

2. Connect the male 3-pin Molex connector on the SG-216C Y-Adapter Cable to the female 3-pin Molex connector SG-235PM-6 6’ Y-Cable.

3. Connect the female 2-pin Molex connector on the SG-235PF-6 6’ Y-Cable to the desired power connector on the SG-500T Power Supply. Connectors 1 and 2 are switched outputs that may be turned on and off. Connectors 3 and 4 are always on.

4. Up to three additional Chambers can be connected as shown below using the SG-235PF-3 3’ Y-Cable.

Hole Board Insert Instal lation and Wiring

NOTE: Prior to connecting the IR strips to the ENV-520USB, verify that the SG-506 power supply is switched off. Failure to do so may cause hardware damage.

1. Place the Hole Board (HB) Insert (part number ENV-510HB for mouse, ENV-515HB for rat) into the chamber and adjust the position of the X and Y-axis IR strips so that the animal’s movement can be tracked while on top of the hole board insert. Use the standard X & Y-axis IR strips above the hole board insert. The X & Y axis transmitter and receiver strips are part numbers ENV-256T & ENV-256R for mouse chambers and ENV-258T & ENV-258R for rat chambers.

2. Attach the Hole Board transmitter and receiver strips to the chamber below the Hole Board insert as shown in Figure 2-8. The mouse hole board strips are part numbers ENV-256HB-T & ENV-256HB-R and the rat hole board strips are part numbers ENV-258HB-T & ENV-258HB-R.

Figure 2-8 - Open Field Chamber with Hole Board Insert

3. Connect the standard X and Y-axis IR transmitter and receiver strips to the ENV-520USB Controller as outlined in the IR Strip Connections section.

4. Use the ribbon cable with three white connectors(CAB-ENV-256T-HB for mouse, CAB-ENV-258T-HB for rat)to connect the X & Y-axis hole board IR strips to the Transmitter Z/HB port on the ENV-520USB Controller. Shown as the purple cable in Figure 2-9. The connector farthest from the middle connector plugs into the ENV-520USB.

5. The cable with three black connectors(CAB-ENV-256R-HB for mouse, CAB-ENV-258R-HB for rat) is used to connect the X & Y-axis hole board receiver strips to the Receiver Z/HB port on the ENV-520USB Controller. See the purple cable in Figure 2-10. The connector farthest from the middle connector plugs into the ENV-520USB Controller.
