Before Washing...

Prepare Wash Load

Empty Pockets and CuffsMake sure all pockets are emptyand turn them inside out. One

bobby pin, metal or plastic toy, nail or sharp object in a load cancatch laundry and cause tears.Facial tissue left in a pocket willproduce extreme "lint". A crayonor lipstick in a wash load maycause stains that cannot beremoved. Roll down cuffs and

shake out grass, sand, and gravel.

Mend Rips and TearsLittle holes can become bigger inthe washer. Mend holes and tears

before placing garments in thewasher.

Close Zipper and Fasten HooksThese can catch on garments in awash load and tear them. Tie belts

and sashes so they won't windaround clothes.

Remove Nonwashable Trim

Check for colorfastness by

squeezing a portion of garment inwarm or hot sudsy water. If thecolor bleeds or runs, wash the

item separately in cold water.

Children's play clothes, as wellas work clothes, will need extra

treatment. Lightly soiledclothes can become dingy ifwashed with heavily soileditems.

Sort Lint "Shedders" FromLint "Receivers"Some fabrics attract lint andshould not be washed with lint-

shedding loads. Lint sheddersme cottons, terry towels,

chenille bedspreads, rugs, andclothes which have been

heavily bleached.

Lint receivers are synthetics, permanent or durable press, knits (including socks),corduroy, and other smoothfabrics.

Pretreat

Pretreat shin collars and cuffs

with a pre-wash product or liquid

detergent when placing them in

the washer. Before washing, treat

special stains with bar soap, liquid

detergent or a paste of water and

granular detergent. Use a pretreatsoil and stain remover.

Load'ng the Washer...

Load Articles

Load items by the amount ofspace they take up, not by theirweight. Mix large and small itemsin a load to get the best washingresults.

Drop items loosely into thewashtub. The bulk of the clothes

rather than the weight willdetermine load size. Do not pack

items in or wrap them around theagitator. Overloading can causepoor cleaning, excessivewrinkling, and tears.

/ \

/

\

//W2801EOB

Items should move freely throughthe wash water for best cleaningresults. Items should rollover, sink and then reappear.

When washing very' large items,do not fill washtub as full as withother loads.

The water level in your washershould fit the size of your washload. Small loads will use lowerwater levels. There must be

enough water in the washtub toallow items to move and turn over

freely.

Overloading the washtub canresult in poor washing andrinsing.

Overloading may also causewrinkling and tearing of items.

IMPORTANT: If in doubt

always use a higher water level. Most average loads will requirewater setting of Large. Failureto have the correct volume ofwater relative to the load willincrease the incidence ofexcessive lint.

W1201EOB

Water hardness is measured in

grains per gallon (G.P.G.) or partsper million (P.P.M.). To learnyour water hardness, call yourWater Department or StateExtension Service. Hard waterwill not remove soil as well as

soft water and can result in gray, clingy laundry. To get clothesclean in hard water, use a

phosphate detergent or use moredetergent if using a non-phosphate detergent. Do not use

soap.

Hard Water May Be SoftenedBy:1. A mechanical water softener

installed in your home.

2. The use of a packaged waterconditioner.

Soft Water

Water should be soft enough toallow soaps and detergents toremove soil effectively. Clotheswill be whiter and brighter whenwashed and rinsed in soft water.

Iron

If iron is present in the water, theclothes may become an all-overyellow or they may be stainedwith brown or orange spots orstreaks. Iron is not always visiblein the water.

Solutions to Iron ProblemsThe installation of a watersoftener will remove smallamounts of iron from the water

supply. The installation of an ironfilter may be necessary for moresevere cases. If the iron comes

from the pipes, it may besufficient just to let the water runinto the empty washer for aboutone minute. This may help toclear the pipes. Spin this water outof the washtub before starting thewash.

If iron comes from the water

heater, drain the healer

occasionally to remove the rust.

If the Iron Condition Cannot BeCorrected

Prepare the wash water first byadding detergent (not soap), thenadd the clothes to the washtub.

Use a phosphate detergent. Thephosphate content of a detergentis listed on the package sidepanel.

Add a nonprecipitating waterconditioner to the washtub justbefore the rinse water enters. Donot use fabric softener in the rinse

water if a packaged waterconditioner is used.

Iron With Chlorine BleachThe use of chlorine bleach withwater that contains iron will makethe rust discoloration worse. Usean "all fabric" bleach.

Wash Temperature

Hot Water

Hot water will give the bestresults of cleaning and sanitizing, but it is not suitable for all items.

It is best for sturdy whites andcolorfast items, heavily soileditems and diapers.

Warm Water

By using warm water, there is lesschance of color loss in items.Warm water also reduces

wrinkling in pemmnent pressitems. Use with light andmoderate soils, non-colorfast or

dark colors, permanent press, silks, woolens, nylon, and acrylic.

Cold Water

Cold water is less effective in

cleaning than hot or warm water, but it does minimize wrinklingand color lading. Use it forwashing extra-sensitive clothes

and for the rinsing of all fabrics.

Energy

You can save energy whenwashing by following a fewguidelines:

l. Heating water accounts for the

greatest energy expense whenwashing. Save on heatingwater by using cold rinses.

2. Wash full loads, but do notoverload.

3. Use soak cycles for heavilysoiled items to reduce washtimes.

4. Select a shorter wash time for

lightly soiled items.

Precipitating Type

• Use a soaking agent and follow steps under "Soaking"

in your Operating Instructions insert or soak overnightto remove stains and soils.

• Always follow manufacturer's instructions with any

pretreatment product.

• You may use detergent or soap in your washer. Thedetermining factor is the hardness of the water. Alwaysuse detergent if the water is over three grains hard.

• Use to remove certain stains, disinfect, and keep clotheswhite.

• Use bleach in the wash water only. Do not use bleach inthe rinse.

• Follow directions on care label of garment.

• Bleach should not be used as a substitute for detergent.Use the recommended amount of bleach.

• Use to soften clothes and remove static electricity frompermanent press _fits and other fabrics of man-madefibers.

• Add during the rinse cycle, or if available, use the fabricsoftener dispenser, using no other product in the rinse.Follow bottle directions carefully.

• These products soften water by tying up the hardnessminerals. Recommended if using soap with water over

three grains hard, or when using nonphosphatedetergents.

• These products settle out hardness minerals byconverting them into particles that will not dissolve in thewater. If used with nonphosphate detergent or soap inhard water, a deposit may form on the clothes andwasher parts.

Do not use a soakingagent with chlorinebleach.

Do not use pretreatersaround the washer or

dryer control panel. Theymay harm the f'mish orpanel markings.

• Soap and nonphosphatepowdered detergentswill not give goodwashing results in hardwater. Soap in hardwater will form stickydeposits.

• The use of powderedsoap is not recommendedwhen washing in coldwater.

• When using liquidchlorine bleach, alwaysuse the bleach dispenser.

• Always measure thebleach. Never exceed

one cup of bleach perfull load.

• Never use chlorinebleach and ammonia in

the same wash cycle.

• Undiluted fabric

softener poured directlyon clothes can stain them.

• Do not mix with

detergent or bleach.

• Do not use with

nonphosphatedetergents or soaps.

Optional Features...

Bleach Dispenser

The bleach dispenser is located inthe left front comer, under the

loading door.

Use liquid bleach in the dispenser.Powdered bleach must not be

used in the dispenser. Addpowdered bleach to the washwater.

Use no more than one cupchlorine bleach for large loads,three-quarters cup for mediumand one-half cup for small loads.

Carefully pour recommendedamount of bleach into the

dispenser during the first fill ofthe washer.

Be careful not to spill undilutedbleach. It is a strong chemical andcan damage some fabrics if it isnot properly diluted.

10

Fabric SoftenerDispenser

To Use DispenserAfter the clothes are loaded intothe washtub and before the start

of the WASH cycle, pour theproper amount of liquid fabricsoftener into the bottle measuring

cap (see bottle directions). Pourinto dispenser.

The large fabric softenerdispenser allows for the fabricsoftener to be diluted with water.

We recommend adding water upto the fill level. Do not exceed tipof arrow which indicates correct

fill level. Over-filling can al!owfabric softener to spill onto theclothes.

Setting the water level to mediumor higher will result in betterperformance from the fabricsoftener.

The fabric softener will remain in

the dispenser during the wash fill, agitation and spin. At the end ofthe wash spin, the liquid fabricsoftener will be dispensed into thewashtub through the slots in theagitator and will be mixed withthe incoming rinse water.

To Clean The DispenserRemove the dispenser housingfrom agitator by squeezing thelower part of the dispenser, pulling directly upward and at thesame time tilting slightly. Thiswill expose the dispenser cup, which is also removable for

cleaning (refer to illustration). Both housing and cup can besoaked in hot soapy water andrinsed clean. The tunnel shape intop of agitator also needs to becleaned. The hole and the slots in

the two rings will require using asmall brush for proper cleaning.

After cleaning, install dispensercup, then push dispenser housingdirectly downward onto top ofagitator until firmly snappedtogether.

Use Tips• Fabric softener spilled onto

garments may cause staining. To remove, soak in a soapysolution made from Sard

Wonder Soap or rub the stainwith a bar of Sard, then wash.

• Liquid fabric softeners will bedispensed during the final rinseand should not be combined

with bleach, bluing, starch, detergents, soaps or packagedwater conditioners during thisrinse.

• Fabric softener is not to be

used in dispenser when usingPrewash cycle, if available.

° When adding detergent to washwater, do not allow any to enter

into softener dispenser cup, assoftener will become gummy.

To prevent softener buildup, thedispenser can be filled with cleanwater for automatic cleaning. Thiscan be done in washing cyclesother than when softener is used.

Starching

Starching adds crispness andbody to fabrics, enhances soilresistance, and makes ironingeasier. There are several types of

starches. Carefully follow labeldircctions for spray or handslarching or starching in thewasher.

Knits

A variety of knits are used for

marly types of clothing andhousehold furnishings. Manyknits

are machine washable, some arehand washable, and some must be

dry-cleaned. When buying, makesure the garment has a care labelwith care instructions. Thesedirections must be followed.

Some knits are stretched duringtheir manufacture and may shrinkor relax when exposed to water.

Cotton KnitsUnless the label indicates that it is

preshrunk, cotton knits willprobably shrink to some degree.Overdrying contributes toshrinkage of cotton knits, Washwater should be hot or warmsuitable tor color and soil. Therinse water should be cold.

Rayon KnitsRayon stretches and shrinkseasily. Treat as a delicate fabricand wash gently.

Synthetic Fiber KnitsKnits made from synthetic fibersor blends containing a highpercentage of synthetics willgenerally keep their shape. Whenbuying, make sure the trimmings(including belts) are machinewashable, seams are not

puckered, and zippers andtrimmings are well fastened.

Knits of Man-Made Fibers

In general, follow the rules for

permanent press fabrics asthey tend to have the samecharacteristics. Set machine to

PERMANENT PRESS/KNITS

cycle. Set the wash water warm,or suitable for color and soil.Rinse water should be cold. Do

not wash with lint-sheddingfabrics. Separate items for color, washing whites separately.

Sweaters of Man-Made Fibers

Follow directions for comparableknits. Button sweaters and turn

inside out. The ribbon behind the

buttons and button holes mayshrink. Stretch to shape afterwashing. Orlon sweaters maystretch. Avoid pulling them whenwet. Dryer dry.

Wool Sweaters

Loosely knit or delicatelyconstructed sweaters will needdelicate care. Hand wash.

Measure garment before and afterwashing. Squeeze gently |hroughthe water with little motion. Rinse

thoroughly. Block to shape anddry fiat.

For sweaters labeled "machinewashable", follow manufacturer's

directions. Dry fiat. Excessagilation and excess tumbling arethe main causes of wool

shrinkage.

Wool Knits

Dry-clean wool knits unlesslabeled machine washable.Follow manufacturer's directions.

Permanent Press

Permanent or durable pressgarments and household itemswill usually not need pressingwhen washed and dried properly. However, some will be morewrinkle resistant than others.

The care needed for permanentpress is a little different than forcottons. Permanent pressgarments will soften or becomepliable when heated. Thissoftening when it is in warm orhot wash water will allow wearwrinkles to be removed. It willalso cause the fabric to wrinkle if

it is crushed, squeezed or spunwhen hot.

How "lb Wash Permanent Press

1. Wash often. Permanent pressclothes tend to !ook clean even

when they should be washed.

2. Sort loads correctly, refer toPage 5.

3. Do not wash with lint-sheddingloads. Permanent press attractslint in the wash water.

4. Pre-treat grease stains and oilyareas. This is especiallyimportant for shirt collars and

cuffs. Rub liquid detergent or apaste of detergent into thearea.

5. Use the PERMANENT

PRESS/KNITS cycle, hot orwarm water, cold rinse, and

sufficient detergent,

6. Use fabric softener in the rinsewater. This will reduce the

static electricity which attractslint and makes garments cling.

To Dry Permanent PressFor best results, pemlanent pressshould be dryer dried. Seegarment care labels. Ironing maybe necessary. Use low heat settingon iron or steam setting on asteam iron.

Washing Problems...

To keep clothes looking white or bright, use good washing practices at all times to prevent a gradual build-upof soil or water hardness minerals on them. If you notice that your clothes are not as bright as they should be,take corrective measures immediately.

Problem Cause Solution

Gray or Dingy Insufficient Detergent Add more detergent to washtub beforeClothes loading clothes. Mild detergents are not

suitable for average soil.

Improper Sorting Wash whites separately. Separate lightfrom heavily soiled items. Clothes canpick up soil from dirty wash water.

Nonphosphate Detergent and Hard Water Follow package directions, Soften waterif possible.

Water Not Hot Enough White clothes will stay whiter with hotwash water. Increase temperature.

Overcrowding Washer Clothes must circulate freely' through thewater for best results.

Yellowed Clothes Unremoved Soil Skin soil is hard to remove. Check hem

edge of sheets and pillowcases, bottomend of t-shirts, etc, If this portion iswhite and center is yellow, the fabriccontains unremoved soil. Use sufficient

detergent and a hot wash. Chlorinebleach may be needed.

Clothes Stained From Iron In The Water To test if an iron stain, use a rust remover

on a portion of the garment. Followbottle directions for larger items.

Older Clothes Some white fabrics tuna yellow with ageand cannot be whitened.

Clothes Tearing Improper Use of Chlorine Bleach No correction for bleach damaged clothes.or Damage Always measure and dilute bleach.

Overcrowding or Overloading Make sure all items can move freely

during agitation.

Insufficient Precare Fasten all hooks and zippers. Mend tears.Remove objects from pockets.

Excessive Lint Improper Sorting Fabrics which shed lint cannot be washedwith fabrics that receive lint.

Insufficient Detergent / Use enough detergent so lint remainsNon-phosphate Detergent suspended in water and flushed out.

Mixing Fabric Types Knits and Permanent Press attract lint.Wash these only with similar items. Usefabric softener in rinse water.

14 38643

Page 15: Use and Guide Home Laundry Automatic Washer · 2009-10-24 · rule for all appliances. 7. Before the washer is removed from service or discarded, remove the lid to the washing compartment

Stain Removal...

Many soils will not become stains if treated promptly. Older stains may be difficult or impossible to remove. Hot

water will set some stains, particularly protein based stains. Use cold or warm water on these before washing inhot water.

WARNINGNever put highly flammable substances like gasoline, kerosene, waxes, cooking oils, etc.into a washer or dryer. Never put articles that have been cleaned with such substances intoa washer or dryer. Failure to comply with these warnings could result in a fire, explosion,and/or serious burns or death. All items with these substances on them should be

thoroughly hand-washed with a detergent so that no trace of the flammable substancesremains. The articles can then be machine washed and/or dried.

When using any kind of a dry-cleaning fluid, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. The fumes should never be inhaled. Use in a well ventilated room away from sparks andflames. Air dry before washing or drying. Dry-cleaning fluid may cause a "ring" to beformed on some permanent press fabrics. This will not wash out.
