Today let us do honor to Christ’s baptism and celebrate this feast in holiness. Be cleansed entirely and

continue to be cleansed. Nothing gives such pleasure to God as the conversion and salvation of men, for whom his every word and every revelation exist. He wants you to become a living force for all mankind, lights

shining in the world. You are to be radiant lights as you stand beside Christ, the great light, bathed in the glory of him who is the light of heaven. You are to enjoy more and more the pure and dazzling light of the

Trinity, as now you have received – though not in its fullness – a ray of its splendor, proceeding from the one God, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint Gregory Nazianzen (325-389)

“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Luke 3:22 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, With this feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Christmas season comes to its completion. Many have long since put away the mangers and tossed the trees unceremoniously to the curb to be recycled. But for us Catholics, the Incarnation is so holy a mystery that it cannot be contained in just one day. It merely begins at Christmas, and continues throughout the Epiphany, which began last Sunday and is completed today. The Epiphany, and thus the Baptism of the Lord, is a feast of light. Christ our Light comes to be born into this dark world and to “sanctify the world by his most merciful coming” (from the Christmas Proclamation). His light brightens our way through this dark world. Christ’s light continues to shine through all of us, who, like him today, have been baptized. His baptism sanctifies the water in which we are all baptized, and by sharing baptism with him, we become bearers of his light to the world, right here in our own time and place. We are the ones now called to help Christ bathe the world in his glorious light, and it is our baptism that gives us grace to do that. It is important to realize that though we just “finished” the Christmas season with today’s feast, the Epiphany continues to go on all through the year, all through our lives. God continues to manifest himself in our lives, revealing his presence in good times and bad. We just need to always be seekers, always looking for the newborn king in every person and circumstance! And so, one last time for this season, Merry Christmas and Happy Epiphany to all. May the light of Christ guide you in all your ways this year, and may you be a glorious light to others. Yours in Christ and his Blessed Mother, Father Pat Mulcahy, Pastor

Saint Gregory Nazianzen (325-389)

“Tú eres mi Hijo amado; En ti me he complacido."

Volunteer Opportunities

St Mary Immaculate Parishioners are invited to witness their faith in a variety of ways in the parish and

community. Listed below are current opportunities to make a difference through volunteering. Please prayerfully consider how you can share in the ministry of our parish.

Eucharistic Adoration Needs Adorers Adorers are greatly needed for the overnight hours in our Adoration Chapel. If you are a night owl, consider spending some of that time visiting with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. There are daytime and evening hours open as well. To sign up for a Holy Hour call 815-603-2350 or email [email protected].

RCIA Sponsors Needed Parishioners are needed to help welcome new Catholics into our community. Sponsors would have conversations with individuals about their faith to understand the needs of the inquirer and then walk with them during their formation towards receiving the Sacraments. Training is provided but an open heart and desire to help others grow in their love for the faith is all that is necessary to begin! Contact Emily Burt x889 for more info.

Table Discussion Facilitators Needed Adult Formation will offer a 9 week video & discussion series called ‘The Wild Goose” on Sundays beginning February 17th. Facilitators are needed to help welcome participants and lead table discussions. Contact Emily Burt x889 for more info.

Temple Tenders - New Members Welcome Every Monday morning, following the 7:30 AM Mass, a group of dedicated parishioners clean the church, wash the windows, vacuum the carpets, clean the sanctuary and check the pews. New volunteers are always welcome. Please contact John West at [email protected] or 815-436-2651, x810 for more information.

Volunteers Needed for Valentine’s Day Date Night Event Volunteers to help with set-up, serving, take-down and child care are needed on Saturday February 9th from 5 - 9 pm to offer couples of our parish a Valentine’s Day date night. Contact Emily Burt x889 for more info.

Welcoming Registration—New Team Members Needed Volunteers are scheduled on rotation to greet and register the newest parishioners of our St. Mary Immaculate family and take them on a tour of the parish. The presentation script and all needed materials are provided. Welcoming Registration meetings are held on most Sundays at 10:15 a.m. in the school library. If you are comfortable speaking in front of a group and want to share your love of our parish with others, this ministry is for you. To learn more about being a part of the SMI Welcoming Team, contact Grace Blaszak at [email protected] or 815-254-7078.

Youth Ministry Needs Adult Chaperones Our youth ministry program is inviting adults to help with planning and chaperoning various events. A desire to be a positive influence in the lives of high school teens is critical. Commitments can be for specific events or for more extended programs. Protecting God’s Children and a background check are required. Contact Dianne Rostollan at [email protected] or 815-436-2651, x814.

National Council of the United States Society of St. Vincent de Paul End Poverty Through Systemic Change

Next Meeting: January 23 at 7:00PM

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a global ministry to the local poor, based in Catholic parishes around the world. It is active in nearly every state in the nation and in 131 countries around the world. The goal of St. Vincent de Paul is to bring hope to the hopeless by supplying love, food, clothing, assistance, and other emergency needs. The Society helps the poor and those with temporary needs as well. It is not a social service agency. It is a Catholic

ministry that sees the face of Christ in the faces of those who are suffering.

At St. Mary Immaculate Parish, the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry serves people in our community. Funds that are collected are distributed to those in need within the boundaries of the Plainfield 202 School District. We meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM. As a member of this ministry, you can make an immediate difference in the lives of so many. To learn more, contact Bob Shurson at [email protected] or 815-436-2651, x414.

Waterleaf “BABY BOTTLES FOR LIFE” Campaign Begins January 19th

This month St. Mary Immaculate will conduct its Baby Bottles for Life campaign to benefit, support and educate pregnant women facing crisis or unintended pregnancies. The funds collected through the Bottles for Life campaign support the programs and services of the Waterleaf Medical Clinic and Education and Resource Center located in Aurora. Waterleaf provides practical help; pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment as well as continuing education and support for women in our community who would otherwise be at risk for choosing abortion. Last year with the support of churches like St. Mary Immaculate, Waterleaf served 846 clients, performed 540 pregnancy tests, 404 ultrasounds and rescued 83 babies. Baby bottles will be distributed to parishioners during the weekend of Saturday, January 19th and Sunday, January 20th to take home and fill. Bottles will then be returned to the parish by the weekend of Saturday, January 26th & Sunday, January 27th.

Please pick up a Baby Bottle after Mass and fill it with your heartfelt financial donation. Please make checks payable to Waterleaf. Your support is greatly appreciated.

ROSARY FOR LIFE

The Rosary for Life will be prayed on Wednesday, January 23rd at 6:15 PM in the Adoration Chapel. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. Please come and pray with us, so that the tragedy of abortion can be eliminated. God gives each baby a soul at conception and that child has a purpose given to him or her by God.

Immediately following the service, you are welcome to join us for our monthly Reverence for Life Ministry meeting in North Wing Rooms B & C, across from the Adoration Chapel.

Please contact Don Hrdlicka at 630-415-6603 with any questions about the Rosary for Life.

Sponsored by the Reverence for Life Ministry and the Knights of Columbus Good Shepherd 5573.

Christians everywhere are asked to unite in prayer for the 2019 intentions entrusted to us by Pope Francis. Apostles of Prayer offer themselves to God each day for the good of the world, the Church, one another, and the Holy Father’s Intentions.

Pope Francis’ monthly prayer intention for January: Young People and the Example of Mary

That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.

Suggested Daily Prayer: Father, Here I am. I know you are always with me. I place my heart in the Heart of your Son Jesus, who gives himself to us in the Eucharist each day. May your Holy Spirit strengthen me to live the Gospel in everything I do and say. For my part I give you this day—all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings— all I am and possess. With Mary, Mother of the Church, I pray for the mission of the Church, for all Apostles of Prayer, and for the intentions of the Pope this month. Amen.

Bench #2 & #3 coming soon!

You did it! With your help we have collected enough plastic caps to be recycled into two more benches for the St. Mary’s campus! Thank you for all your contributions that will keep plastic out of the landfills and provide needed outside seating options. (recycled benches supplied through the ABC Program of Green Tree Plastics) The processing cost of $250 for each bench was generously donated by the Council of Catholic Women (CCW) and the families of the Confirmation Program. The Green Team, comprised of Confirmation students who are no longer in the program and have busy high school schedules, have decided to close this project. Therefore, we will no longer be collecting bottle caps here at SMI.

Waste Management suggests leaving the lids on the bottles & place in recycling; they then have a chance of being captured for recycling and not end up in the landfill.

From the Diocese

God our Father, You made each of us to use our gifts in the Body of Christ. We ask that You inspire young people whom You call to priesthood and consecrated life to courageously follow Your will. Send workers into Your great

harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted, and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Prayer for Vocations by Pope Francis

For an increase of vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life, especially in the Diocese of Joliet, we pray to the Lord.

Lord, hear our prayer.
