Article evolution is a new and ongoing project, which improves the online delivery of research articles on IOPscience, enabling you to interact with research in new ways.

The first step in this project has provided the functionality for you to view new articles on IOPscience as HTML pages.

Many new features are available, such as being able to zoom in and out of images and viewing video abstracts. MathJax technology has been incorporated, improving the rendering of mathematics and a mobile view of abstract and article pages is also available.

Search resultsThe results counter immediately tells you how many results you have returned.

Use the PACS or MSC codeEnter your PACS or MSC code into the search box, or enter your search term to find the relevant codes.

Filter by subject or journalCheck boxes allow you to filter the information that you need quickly.

AuthorsYou can click on an author’s name to link to other papers by that author.

Tag this articleTag any article with your own description for future reference.

Filter resultsYou can expand each filter category such as PACS code, date, subject, journal, and author.

You can also enter a further full-text search term within your initial set of results to refine your search.

• “LabTalk”/“Insights” showcases groundbreaking work from the authors themselves in the form of a short news item.

• Video abstracts enable researchers to go beyond the constraints of the written article with this free-to-view video-sharing technology.

These services are currently available on a limited number of journals.

Journal homepages – iopscience.org/journals Click on the fourth tab to get to the Journals tab, where you will find a list of over 60 journals from IOP Publishing. Click on the journal title that you wish to view.


Users also readThis feature generates a list of articles “also read” by other users who have read the current article.

More contentThese tabs allow you to access more information about the article that you are viewing:

• References – access and view cited articles.

• Cited by – link to articles that reference the one you are viewing.

• Supplementary data – access videos, images, and other extra files associated with the article.

Related review articlesView review articles related to this research to gain an insight into the key trends in this subject area. Related review articles are selected based on PACS/MSC codes, and are no more than three years old.

BookmarkA popular way to store, classify, share, and search links through social bookmarking.

Abstract pageWhile still on the Journals tab, you can select a specific article from a journal and find out more about it.

Tagged articlesTag articles of interest to you and these are available in two places – the tag-cloud provides a clear visual aid.

My searchesSave your searches from previous results and set up alerts to notify you of new results.

My alertsSet up e-mail alerts to notify you when new articles are published.

DownloadsView articles that you have downloaded in the last three months.

Order historyThis shows a complete list of all articles that you have purchased.
