E3 Network Geoportal User Guide

INTRODUCTION

The ECDC E3 Geoportal, the central component of the European Environment and Epidemiology (E3) Network, has been designed by ECDC to collect and make available a wide range of information for anybody interested in infectious disease epidemiology in Europe.

The objective of the E3 Geoportal is to promote geospatial infectious disease modelling in Europe and include advanced risk assement into public health decision-making processes.

There are many different determinants of infectious disease transmission, one of which is climate change, but they are often highly dispersed and/or difficult to obtain. The E3 Geoportal will facilitate the discovery, the collection and exchange of these datasets in a user-friendly manner. It is an inventory of all the information resources that are collected, maintained, and managed by a collaborative effort under the European Environment and Epidemiology Network.

The European Environment and Epidemiology (E3) Network is also producing other useful resources such as analytical tools, published risk maps, reports, and software applications. The geospatial datasets contained in the E3 Geoportal cover potential determinants of various communicable diseases in Europe in the broadest sense. They include past, current and future climatic parameters such as climate change scenarios; landscape and land-use features; and socio-economic data.

If you are a producer of geospatial data relevant to infectious disease epidemiology, we invite you to become a partner of the E3 Network. In this way, you will be able to upload your own geospatial datasets and/or maps for sharing with other users (you can designate the privacy settings and data policies distribution for such data). The E3 Geoportal has been designed to be consistent with the INSPIRE guidelines (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community) so as to ensure reliability and comparability of data.

After a Quick start section outlining the overall functionalities of the E3 Geoportal, the user guide provides the user with the main functionalities of the E3 platform page by page.

QUICK START SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

This page describes the main features of the E3 Geoportal. For further detailed information, please refer to the user guide available above (link to PDF user guide right up corner). System requirement: the platform is optimized for Internet Explorer 10 with Google earth plugin available at: http://www.google.com/earth/explore/products/plugin.html.

ECDC does not guarantee any support for the use of other web-browsers even if those were successfully used during user test phase.

SEARCH AND DISCOVERY

Keyword Search. Use the free text box to type in a keyword of the subject or topic of search. If this text is found in the metadata abstract, the search query will return the results in a list at the bottom of the page.

Extended Search. The following filters can be user to perform an extended search by:

- content type in selecting the different types of resources available in the Geoportal (map files, map services,documents, tools, etc.);

- date that applies to the date of creation of the resource;

- data classification corresponding to GEneral Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus GEMET- INSPIRE themes (the INSPIRE Spatial data themes), E3 Keywords (keywords formulated by the E3 Network Project) or Data Category (ISO standards for data classification);

- geographic location using name or geographic extent. You can specify a place name in the free text box, or draw a bounding box to define an area of interest within the coverage map.

The sort option will display the returned list in order of preference.

Browse Tree Catalogue. The browse tree follows a data classification structures that allows the user to drill down and find the resources in a particular subject or topic area. It uses data classification standards from INSPIRE GEMET (Thesaurus GEMET at https://wiki.ceh.ac.uk/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=119115872 ), ISO Topic Categories (more information at http://gcmd.nasa.gov/add/difguide/iso_topics.html and http://www.isotc211.org/ ), and the E3 Keywords in a file tree structure.

RESULTS DISPLAY AND FUNCTIONS

The results of a search appear as a list of records. Each record displays the following main sections: the resource title, the resource short abstract and the functions for interacting with the resource.

Note that the display and behaviour of functions on a record depend on both its resource type and user permission settings.

DATA/METADA UPLOAD AND PUBLISHING

The Geoportal provides tools for creating metadata, uploading metadata alone and uploading metadata and data into its catalogue. These include:

Metadata Compiler. The metadata complier allows the user to create a metadata file that is compliant with the E3 metadata standards. See corresponding webpage and Metadata compiler help file for more information.

Upload Metadata and/or Data. A registered user can upload metadata only, as one file at a time or as a batch. Metadata can also be uploaded together with the associated data (zipped format) but only as a single file at a time.

The system will automatically validate each metadata file upload against E3 standards. Only compliant metadata file will be accepted and uploaded successfully. The E3 service administrator and the project management will control and approve all data/metadata prior to dissemination.

USER REGISTRATION

The user should first create an ECDC public account (user name and login) to access ECDC public application (see link: Create an ECDC account in E3 geoportal Home page).

Once the user is sign-in with ECDC public account credential (sign-in link in the right up corner); the link to request access to E3 repository is activated (Home page link: "Request access to E3 data repository as an E3 User"). The user is able to submit to the E3 service administrator the E3 registration form. The registration will be notified to the user by email within one working week to access data and functionalities as first level of permission (create and upload metadata, preview of data and Image Services). The system will automatically validate each metadata file uploaded against E3 standards for approval of the E3 service administrator.

The E3 user can contribute to the repository in sending a proposal using the link "Contact as to become an ECDC E3 partner" and, in addition, access restricted data download and submit geospatial data and metadata into the ECDC E3 Geoportal thematic group.
