    Dimensioning / Stiffeners

The main loads exerted on the side walls of ventilation ducts and rectangular fittings arise from the pressure differencebetween the inside and the outside of the duct. This causes deformation of the side walls of plastic components (bulging or buckling). The increase in pressure loss in poorlydimensioned ducts may be so severe that the entire system can no longer function, even without components beingmechanically destroyed (no fractures or cracks).Loaded thermoplastics undergo slow creep, thus maximum deformation only occurs after an extended operating period.Although the temperature plays a key role in this case, chemical effects of the gas may also be very important.

The minimum wall thicknesses of unstiffened plastic ducts can be determined according to DIN 4740 and DIN 4741 anddepending on the pressure and temperature as well as the duct dimensions. These calculations are usually carried out using long-term strength values for a loading period of 10 years. In this case, thepermissible deformation is limited to 2% of the largest side of the duct, thus

    permissible f < 0.02 x largest duct side

This definition is used as the basis for dimensioning all rectangular air duct components Although these standards only applyThis definition is used as the basis for dimensioning all rectangular air duct components. Although these standards only applyto unstiffened ducts, this 2% requirement is fulfilled by all stiffened ducts and fittings in the MIETZSCH product range. If this deformation narrows the cross-section of the components, the resulting increase in pressure loss can be expected to beabout 5%. This, however, depends on the degree of accuracy of the pressure loss calculation.

Even under "normal" operating conditions (e.g. 1000Pa and 35°C), a PPs duct of 800mm x 800mm requires a wall thickness of15mm to comply with the permissible deflection of 16mm. Thus, components may have to be stiffened, depending on theoperating conditions.

The manufacturer generally specifies the design and dimensions of rectangular air duct components. Therefore, the customermust provide the following information:

maximum internal pressure (over- or underpressure)temperature (permanent, temporary)exposure to media, with material, if appropriaterequired type of stiffening (if necessary)

There are two basic types of stiffening:Examples of duct stiffening

There are two basic types of stiffening:

    1) External stiffening

The side walls of the duct are equipped with external ribsor a stiffening frame around the entire circumference. The ribs or frame must be permanently attached to theduct. For low loads (pressure, temperature, dimensions), the

    individual plastic rib

    circumferential plastic frame

stiffening elements are made of the same thermoplasticmaterial as the duct. For higher loads, the stiffening elements are made ofplastic-coated steel profiles that are attached to the basicbody of the duct. This provides sufficient stability for high-pressure applications.

    2) Internal stiffening

    plastic-coated steel profile

    2) Internal stiffening

Tie rods or a series of tie rods are welded onto the insideof the duct to prevent bulging. If the tie rods are installedas a cross or double cross, they can be additionallysecured at the crossing points. This type of stiffening can only be used for low loads andalso leads to higher pressure losses. The relativelysmooth external surface of the duct is visually

larger duct side is supported by tie rods

    Definition of dimensions

Definition of dimensions f and e

Dimensions f and e have either a positive or negative value. It is essential that the + or - sign is given when specifying the dimensions of the component.

    Further comments on the definitions:

Axial view of the connection end

The ( f, e ) coordinate system is referenced to the upper right-hand corner of the connection end (Point 1).

The axial deviation of the component is given by the ( f, e ) coordinates of Point 2 of the connection end . Thus:

If Point 2 lies to the right of Point 1, f is positive. If Point 2 lies above Point 1, e is positive.

If Point 2 lies to the left of Point 1, f is negative. If Point 2 lies below Point 1, e is negative.

    If h i d i i l di i i d b P i 2 d di i f b P i 2 f (If the connection end is circular, dimension e is governed by Point 2-e and dimension f by Point 2-f (see example 2).

  • APPLICATIONLouvre dampers are used to regulate the volumetric flow rate and pressure or as a shut-off element in ventilationsystems. All parts that come into contact with the flowing gas are made of plastic, which makes them particularly suitable for applications with corrosive exhaust gases, e.g. laboratory air extraction systems or process air engineering.

DESIGNThe louvre dampers consist of a piece of duct with connecting frame and fitted with profiled hollow slats. The slats are connected to an external rod assembly that co-rotates them all simultaneously. The damper is operated manually or by electric (pneumatic) actuators.
