Whenever you approach the BeoSoundCentury, the glass door slides open, andall the relevant buttons light up in red.You are invited in to play!

In this way, the BeoSound Centuryengages you in a playful conversationabout its music sources: the CD player,the radio, or the tape recorder.

The BeoSound Century system is switched to stand-by,but it will respond to a brief wave of your hand.

When you approach the system, it opens up toyou, and the four source buttons light up –

inviting you in to play!

Now, try pressing one of the source buttons.The source starts playing, and the system offers

you all the relevant buttons for that source (herethe CD player).

If you leave the BeoSound Century to enjoy themusic, the glass door closes, and the lights go out.

The three sources

Whenever you approach the BeoSoundCentury, the glass door slides open, andall the relevant buttons light up with aninvitation for you to play one of themusic sources: the CD player, the radio,or the tape recorder…

The top section of the system holds the tray forcompact discs. The compact disc is kept in place bya clamp, which can be raised and lowered bypressing the LOAD button (top right-handbutton).

The bottom section is for tape cassettes. The taperecorder adjusts automatically to the type of tapeyou are using: ferro or chrome.

The BeoSound Century radio only becomes visiblewhen it is being used. You will see all the buttonsfor radio operation light up, and – with a P – thedisplay indicates that a radio program is playing.

The middle-section of the system contains thedisplay and all the buttons you need for operatingthe system. For further information, see pages 8 -9.

Loading a CDPressing the LOAD button raises the clamp whichholds the CD in place. You can then remove anyCD from the compartment and load the one youwant to play.

Always load the CD with the text side facing you!

Pressing LOAD again lowers the clamp. You mayalso press the CD button to lower the clamp andstart playing the CD at once.

Loading a tapeThe tape cassette must be loaded with the tapeslot facing downwards. Insert the top section ofthe cassette first; then push in the bottom half ofthe cassette until it is properly seated in thecompartment.

To unload the tape, grip the sides of the cassette– a little below the middle – and gently, butfirmly, pull it outwards.

Headphone socketThe headphone socket is placed on the back ofBeoSound Century, as illustrated to the left.

Once you connect your headphones to BeoSoundCentury, the sound from the built-in BeoSoundCentury speakers is muted. The sound from thespeakers is then demuted when you disconnectyour headphones.

Buttons and display

Pressing a red button makes theBeoSound Century respond – either bycarrying out your instruction, or bymaking another set of buttons availableto you – or both.

The display and the red buttons guideyou through any operation you maywish to carry out, engaging you in aplayful conversation about theBeoSound Century music sources.

These pages show what the display andeach of the 26 buttons are used for…

SOUND allows you to adjust the sound levels: volume, balance, bass, treble and loudness

(pages 22 - 23).

STORE allows you to store:� radio stations on program numbers (page 12);

� your favourite sound levels (page 23).

REC allows you to record the source you arelistening to (pages 18-20).

MODE is used for:� switching AM and FM bands on the radio

(page 11);� switching the CD random play function on

and off (page 15);� switching the tape Noise Reduction

function on and off (page 17);� switching the automatic tape reverse

function on and off (page 20).

The display keeps you informed about what thesystem is doing and about any on-goingoperation. See the displays throughout this guideand on pages 24 - 25.

The source buttons switch on the source you wishto listen to:� RADIO turns on the radio (pages 10 - 13);� CD starts the CD player (pages 14 - 15);� TAPE starts the tape recorder (pages 16 - 20);� AUX plays any auxiliary source (page 21).

The two step buttons, , are used:� for stepping through:

– radio programs (page 10),– tracks on a CD or a tape (pages 14 and 17);

� for searching for radio stations (page 11);� for rewinding and fast forwarding a tape

(page 17);� for cancelling a recording (page 19).

STOP is used:� for pausing playback of a CD or a tape

(pages 14 and 16);� for pausing and stopping a recording (page 18).

The TUNE button allows you to tune in tonew radio stations (pages 11 - 12).

Note: For a complete description of the variousfunctions performed by the system, please followthe references to the relevant pages.

The volume buttons allow you to adjust volumeup or down – and to adjust the various soundlevels (pages 22 - 23).

The LOAD button raises and lowersthe clamp holding the CD in place(page 7).

The stand-by button switches thesystem to stand-by.

The number buttons are used for:� keying in radio program numbers or radio

frequencies (pages 10 - 11);� keying in CD track numbers (page 14);� playing a tape from the beginning (page 16).

Pressing the RADIO button makes thedisplay and all the buttons for operatingthe radio light up. At the same time, theradio starts playing the program youwere last listening to.

The program number is indicated in thedisplay, for example: P 3.

To switch to another program, you caneither key in its number directly usingthe number buttons, 0 - 9; or you canpress the step buttons, , to browse through all yourprograms.

The system only makes the necessarynumber buttons available. That is, if youonly have stored radio programs on thenumbers 1 to 5, only the buttons 1 to 5will be lit.

If you select another source, the radiostops automatically. To switch off theentire system, press the stand-bybutton, �.

Note: If you press RADIO again while the radio isplaying, you can see the frequency for the currentradio station in the display. Press RADIO again torevert to the program number indication.

Tuning in to radio stations

Whenever you turn on the radio, theTUNE button lights up. TUNE is thekey to the tuning function in theBeoSound Century radio.

When you press TUNE, the buttons onthe system change, so that only thebuttons necessary for tuning in to radiostations become available.

There are three ways of tuning in toradio stations:

� You can make the system do all thework for you (see how on page 12).

� You can let the system search forstations by pressing TUNE thenSTEP> or

You can store 30 different radio stationson program numbers of their own in theBeoSound Century radio. This enablesyou to access your favourite radiostations directly, simply by keying in anumber.

Once you have tuned in to the stationyou want, and you are hearing it clearlyin the loudspeakers, you can store it ona number of your own choice: PressSTORE, then key in the number youwant (1-30), and press STORE again.

When you have stored the station, pressTUNE to continue tuning in to the nextradio station you want…

Note: When you press STORE the first time, thedisplay automatically offers you a vacant programnumber for the new station. If the number suitsyou, you need not key in another – just pressSTORE again.

The number may also indicate that the station youhave found has already been stored – on thenumber shown.

When the number stops blinking, the programhas been stored.

Note: If you wish to erase a program from itsprogram number, press TUNE, then STORE, 0,STORE while you are listening to the program.

Let the system tune in for you

You may also let the system find all theradio stations available in your area, andstore them on program numbers oftheir own automatically.

To do so, just turn on the radio andpress TUNE, then press the STOREbutton for 2 seconds.

The system finds all the stationsavailable in the FM band in your areaand stores them on program numbersfrom 1 to 30.

Note: This tuning method is only available in theFM band.

Switching displays

When you start playing a CD, thedisplay always shows which tracknumber is playing.

At any time, while the CD is playing,you can change the indication in thedisplay by pressing the CD button. Thedisplay then changes – first intoshowing the track time, then intoshowing the remaining disc time(minutes and seconds).

If you press CD a third time, the displayreverts to showing the track number.

The current track has been playing for 1 minuteand 47 seconds (track time)

Playing tracks in random order

Pressing the MODE button twice, whilethe CD is playing, makes the CD playerplay all the tracks on the CD in randomorder.

If you wish to cancel your random playinstruction, simply press MODE again –twice. Switching off the CD player alsocancels the random play function.

Pressing the TAPE button starts thetape recorder. The display and all thebuttons for operating the tape recorderlight up, and the tape you have loadedstarts playing.

If you press 1 after starting the taperecorder, the tape is rewound to startplaying from the first track.

You may of course ”turn” the tape anytime. To do so, just press the TAPEbutton once more for 2 seconds, and theother side of the tape starts playing.

The counter position is indicated in thedisplay, counting from 000 wheneveryou start playing a new tape, and whenthe tape is ”turned”.

You can pause the tape recorder at anypoint by pressing STOP. To resumeplaying, just press TAPE again.

When the tape has been played throughonce (A and B side), the tape recorderstops, waiting for another instruction toplay.

If you select another source, the taperecorder stops automatically. To switchoff the entire system, press the stand-bybutton, �.

Note: If the tape recorder is left paused orstopped for more than 30 minutes, the systemswitches to stand-by.

Note: When the tape is ”turned” to play the B-side, this is indicated in the display with a dashbefore the counter indication: -000.

Finding tracks or counter positions on the tape

While the tape recorder is playing, youcan make it find the next track simplyby pressing the step button, STEP>.

Or, you can make it play the currenttrack again by pressing

Whenever the BeoSound Century isplaying, you can start recording directlyon the tape you have loaded. Just pressthe REC button twice.

When you press REC the first time, thetape recorder gets ready for recording.The buttons necessary for recordinglight up, and the display indicates thatthe system is ready by, alternately,displaying REC and then the number ofthe radio program or CD track you arelistening to.

Press REC again, and recording startsimmediately.

Recording a specific track on a CD

The system also allows you to startrecording from a specific track on a CD.

Press STOP to pause the CD player.Then press the REC button and key inthe track number you wish to record,using either the number buttons, 0-9, orthe step buttons, . Thetrack number is indicated in the display.

When you press REC again, the taperecorder starts recording from thebeginning of the CD track you havechosen to start from.

To pause or stop recording, just pressthe STOP button once or twice.

The BeoSound Century tape recorderalways plays through the entire tape(A and B side) before stopping.

This automatic tape reverse functioncan of course be switched off duringrecording so that your recording isonly made on one side of the tape atthe time.

The AUX button enables you to startplaying any auxiliary source you haveconnected to the BeoSound Century.

Pressing the AUX button makes thedisplay and the relevant buttons lightup. AU is written in the display toindicate that you may now startoperating the auxiliary source in theusual way.

You will then hear the sound from theauxiliary source through the BeoSoundCentury speakers.

If you select one of the sources in theBeoSound Century instead, the AUXfunction is stopped automatically. Toswitch off the entire system, press thestand-by button, �.

Note: The REC button enables you to record fromthe auxiliary source onto the tape in theBeoSound Century tape recorder (see page 18).

Note: The auxiliary source must be connected tothe AUX-socket on the back of the system. Forfurther information, please refer to the smallsetting-up guide also enclosed with the BeoSoundCentury.

Adjusting the sound levels

Press repeatedly until the sound cueyou want is displayed

The SOUND button enables you toadjust the sound coming out of theBeoSound Century speakers.

You can adjust the volume level and thebass and treble levels to suit yourpersonal taste; you can alter the balancebetween the left and right speakers todirect the sound towards your favouritelistening position; and you can cut theloudness function in or out, as you like.

Each time you press the SOUNDbutton, a cue appears in the display,indicating which adjustment can bemade, and showing the current setting.

Use the volume buttons, ∧ and ∨, toadjust as required.

See the next page if you want to storeyour new sound levels. If you don’t, theadjusted levels will be reset to theiroriginal values when the system isswitched to stand-by.

The display shows the current volume level.Volume can be adjusted in steps of two within arange of 00 to 72.

The display shows the current balance setting –here neutral. Balance can be adjusted within arange of 6 to either side.

The display shows the current bass level – hereneutral. Bass can be adjusted within a range of -5to +5.

The display shows the current treble level – hereneutral. Treble can be adjusted within a range of -5 to +5.

The display shows the current loudness setting –glowing steadily for ON, blinking for OFF.

Note: To adjust volume you need not press theSOUND button first. Simply press the volumebuttons, ∧ and ∨.

Note: The loudness function is used tocompensate for the human ear’s lack of sensitivityto high and low frequencies when listening to lowvolume levels. It ”boosts” the high and lowfrequencies so that the music becomes moredynamic.

Note: The Beo4 remote control also enables youto silence the BeoSound Century speakerstemporarily; and it enables you to reset youradjusted sound levels without switching off thesystem first. See how on pages 26 - 27.

Storing your new sound levels

You can store your adjusted soundlevels so that the system switches on ate.g. a lower volume level; or e.g. so thatit always plays with more or less bass ortreble tone than stored from the factory.

All you have to do, to turn youradjustment into a permanent setting ofthe system, is press the STORE buttonwhen you have adjusted the varioussound levels to your liking.

When you press STORE, the displaystarts blinking – asking you if you wantto store the setting. Press STORE againto confirm that you do.

Note: If the STORE button is not lit up in red, pressSOUND again before pressing STORE twice.

Note: All the current sound levels will be storedsimultaneously.

Using the Beo4

Although designed primarily for close-up operation, the BeoSound Centurymusic system can also be operated froma distance.

The Beo4 remote control operates allthe primary functions offered by thesystem such as switching on, selectingradio programs, selecting tracks on aCD or a tape, searching on A.tape,pausing CD and A.tape playback,recording onto A.tape, adjusting sound,and switching off.

Even though remote control is availablefor recording audio sources onto theBeoSound Century A.tape recorder, werecommend that you start and stop yourrecordings via the operation panel onBeoSound Century itself.

At any time, while the BeoSoundCentury is playing, you can light thebuttons on the system briefly bypressing the MENU button on Beo4. Ifyou press MENU twice, the lightremains on until you switch the systemto stand-by – or until you press MENUagain.

Note: To be able to play any auxiliary source youhave connected to the BeoSound Century AUX-socket, you must press LIST on Beo4 to find A.AUX in the Beo4 display, then press GO.

Beo4 while you press LIST to get access to thespecial Beo4 setup function and let go of bothbuttons at the same time. You are now in thesetup mode.

• Then you press LIST to display ADD? and thenGO which calls up the list of cues you want andthe first cue appears on the display.

• Then you keep on pressing LIST until the cueyou want to add is displayed and then you pressGO to add it. When the cue stops blinking it hasbeen added.

• The addition has now been completed and youpress EXIT to leave the Beo4 setup function.

Remote control via the BeoLink 1000 terminal is alsoavailable for the BeoSound Century.
