Basic Safety Instructions

1

Basic Safety InstructionsBefore you start printing:

Make sure to follow all warnings on the printer. Use the proper power source typeindicated on the printer’s label. Connect all equipment to grounded outlets. Do not use the same outlet for

any other system, such as a copy machine or an air control unit that turns onand off.

Place the printer where the power outlet is easily seen. Do not allow the power cord to be damaged. If you are using an extension cord, make sure theextension cord’s power

ampere rate does not exceed that of the printer’s cord. Keep electromagnetic devices and other potential sources of magnetic fields

away from your printer. Do not use the printer in locations that have high humidity, shocks, vibrations,

debris or dust. Leave enough space around the printer for proper ventilation. Do not leave the printer near heat sources such as radiators or heat vents. Do not leave the printer in direct sunlight. Place the printer on a flat table or on a stable surface that extends around the

printer. The printer will not work properly if it is tilted or leaning. When packing and moving the printer, do not set the printer on its side or

upside down. This may cause the ink to spill. Turn the printer OFF before cleaning. Clean with a damp cloth and avoid

spilling any liquid on the printer.

Caution: Do not unplug the printer to shut it off. Use the power button instead. Do not unplug the printer until the Main Power Switch has been turned off. Do not block any of the printer’s vents or insert anything foreign into its slots. Do not attempt to service the printer yourself beyond the troubleshooting

techniques covered in this manual. Turn the printer OFF, unplug it and take itto a qualified service technician.

Keep the machine level.

Safety Instructions for Ink Cartridges Always keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. While handling ink, be careful not to spill it on your skin. If ink does get on

your skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If it gets in your eyes, flushthem out immediately with water.

Do not put your hand in the printer or touch the cartridges while printer is inoperation.

Chapter 1 –An Introduction

Chapter 1

An Introduction

About the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM

The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM is an inkjetprinter that has been modified to print onalmost any type of fabric material as wellas non-textiles, such as golf balls, keyboards, tennis balls, etc. (The ink willnot work on nylon and certain syntheticmaterials.) In the past, this type of printingwas difficult, if not impossible to do. Therewere no inks available that would work onboth100% cotton and 50/50cotton/polyester blends and then withstandthe rigors of washing. That all changed with the introduction of FastINKTM Textile Ink.Designed specifically for these materials, FastINKTM requires only a post-treatment ofheat tocure when printed on lighter shirts. It’s even possible to print with white ink ondark shirts with the application of a pretreatment. FastINKTM Textile Ink is so versatile itcan be used for printing on non-textiles by simply applying Fast T-Jet Non-Textile SeriesPretreatment to the item before printing and Fast T-Jet Non-Textile Series Post-Treatment to the item after printing.

Since Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM is based on standardinkjet technology, with the Epson 7800 printer beingthe heart of the system, you can print from anygraphics application like Adobe Illustrator, AdobePhotoshop, Adobe InDesign, CorelDraw, MacromediaFreehand or QuarkXPress. Another very goodgraphics application you can use is FastARTIST,which is included with as part of your kit.

Besides being reliable and versatile, the Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM is fast, printing a standard T-Shirt sizedimage in only one to two minutes. So, whether it’s a shirt, a towel, mouse pads, thongs, tops, tote bags, bibs or baseball caps the possibilities are endless.

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM Important Points

The Basics

You probably can’t wait to get started and we share your enthusiasm for the garment decoration process. However, before you print that first shirt, there are a few basics thatneed to be covered.

For the best results read this entire manual first before attempting to print on anygarment..

1. The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM prints best on 100% cotton. When printing on 50%cotton/50% polyester blends, 100% polyester or other natural or syntheticmaterials you may not achieve the same print brightness. For example: dyefrom dark polyester fibers may bleed into your print causing the print colors tobe effected. A white print on a 50/50 red garment may turn pink when youheat the garment to set the ink.

2. The printer is compatible with ONLY WindowsTM based Operating Systems atthis time.

Your new printer includes the latest versions of both FastARTISTTM andFastRIP. FastARTISTTM is a WindowsTM only graphics application that willmake preparing an image for print as simple as a click or two of the mouse.With“one-click wonder”underbasing and simple clipping features,FastARTISTTM can help ease the transition into graphics design if you are notfamiliar with other applications. For avid users of Photoshop, CorelDraw,Illustrator etc., you may choose to work within the application of choice andstill set up the image properly for printing. There is also the option of importingan image into FastARTISTTM from other graphics applications in order to takeadvantage of the one-click Underbase Wizard

3. Macintosh Users can still create an image in their favorite graphicsapplication; they will just have to transfer it to a PC for printing.

4. Every image must print to FastRIPTM for final output.

FastRIPTM works as the printer queue and print manager, allowing you to notonly select different print modes and other print attributes, but also archiveprint jobs for future reprints.

Maintenance

Although the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM is “simply” an inkjet printer, the number one technical support issue is a lack of maintenance of the machine. Printing on T-shirts is

Page 11: User’sManual Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM - Equipment Zone€¦ · User’sManual Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM LF-2200 This manual contains the latest and most accurate information at the time of

Chapter 1 –An Introduction

5

not the same as printing on paper.. A shirt gives off much more lint and the amount ofink deposited on fabrics is far greater than on paper. Plus, when printing on dark shirts, you need to apply a pretreatment to the shirt. This pretreatment can get inside theprinter and cause numerous problems so we recommend you pretreat shirts as far awayas possible (i.e. in another room.) If you take ownership of the required maintenance, printing with the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM will be a joy. If you decide that a few minuteseach day is too much time to spend to maintain your investment then you willhave more ruined shirts and lots of frustration. See Chapter 8 and 9 for moredetails.

Poor Artwork

With so many graphics programs readily available, everyone is an artist. Poor qualityartwork will be one of your biggest concerns. There is no magic that will make a lowresolution, low quality piece of artwork look great on a shirt. It is important that you taketime to learn as much as you can about graphic art programs and some of the simplemethods that can be used to improve the quality of customer supplied artwork.

A Word about the Garment Decorating Business andWhere to Learn More

You are entering a fantastic business, one where you can make a lot of money in ashort period of time. But, like any business, there will be ups and downs. You will needto learn about the industry such as trade standards, copyright and trademark laws, howto price your work, how to deal with customers and much more. Learning the businessand marketing side is often harder than the actual printing of shirts. There are many valuable resources that can help you, including websites, trademagazines, books, videos and trade shows. Please check out www.ScreenPrinters.Netfor the latest “How To” in a box training materials.

The Book

One of the most valuable books on the industry is, How To Print T-Shirts for Fun and Profit. Written by Scott and Pat Fresener , it is the“bible” of the industry. Even though this book is geared towardslearning the screen printing process, it also contains excellentsections on the business aspects of garment decoration, includingmarketing and selling your creations, the law, creating graphics, andbest of all, a comprehensive Suppliers Directory.

Computer Graphics DVDs

One of the hardest things to learn for the computer novice is computer graphics. Thereare a number of excellent DVDs about computer graphics and how to use AdobePhotoshop, CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator. The main focus of these DVDs are on thescreen printing process, however they also feature excellent sections on how to createdesigns, how to deal with poor quality original artwork and more.

Business and Marketing DVD’s

Since the business and marketing side is often complex and sometimes frustrating, there is an excellent DVD called Business and Marketing that covers all aspects ofrunning a successful garment decorating enterprise. There is also a good set of DVD’son marketing and selling called the MarketingToolbox.

Internet

The number one website for the industry is www.ScreenPrinters.Net. There you will finda wealth of articles, industry links, aBuyer’s Guide and openForums.

Trade Shows and Trade Magazines

There are a number of good trade magazines and dozens of trade shows around theworld for garment decorating. Two of the more popular resources for the “when’s and where’s” are the website www.ScreenPrinters.Net and the book How To Print T-Shirts.Both contain numerous trade show listings.

A Word of Advice

When starting a business, it is often easy to think nothing will go wrong. You need to bepositive about your venture, but in the beginning, expect the worse. If you take ordersfor printed shirts before you have even received your machine, you might find thatdeadlines are hard to meet because of the learning curve and unexpected problems. The garment business is one of deadlines such as event shirts, shirts for specialoccasions and shirts with “dates” on them. You must always give yourself room for error. Shirt suppliers might not ship on time. You might not have checked your inkinventory and end up running out of a color. And, yes, you will ruin a few shirts! Acceptthis as a fact of life in the garment decorating industry. To have the most success, allowextra time to fill orders and don’t make commitments that might be hard to make. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone wearing one of your creations, but nothing more disturbing than working all night to meet a deadline. Anyone who hasbeen in this industry has experienced the joy and sorrow of both. Plan ahead andalways have a cushion to make sure you meet deadlines.

Chapter 2

Unpacking and SetupYour T-Jet Jumbo2 is a very large piece of equipment. It is shipped in sturdycrates with bracing to hold the delicate components in place. You MUST NOTuncrate or assemble the printer without the help of an Authorized ServiceTechnician.

Please retain all shipping materials, bags, boxes and directions received with theprinter. These items will be needed in the event the machine must be returned forrepair or transported to another location. If you return or ship a Fast T-Jet Jumbo2TM without using the original shipping carton you may void the warranty. Thecrate may be disassembled for storage.

Failure to follow these steps will VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

Unpacking Your T-Jet Jumbo2TM

Your T-Jet Jumbo2TM is shipped in a number ofcrates and boxes. The largest crate has the mainprinting machine and key components. Thesecond crate contains the bed for the printer.Your system may have more boxes depending onany optional accessories you ordered.

This manual DOES NOT have detailedinstallation and unpacking instructions becausethis process must be performed with the help of an authorized service tech.

You should have received and signed a Pre-installation Checklist prior to shipment ofyour printer. This checklist outlined the importance of room conditions, uncrating andassembly and all the other details necessary for successful setup and operation of yourprinter.

The main component of your machine weighs over 500 pounds and will require atleast FOUR people to lift it from the crate and onto the printing base.

Location, location, location

The Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM should not be exposed to direct sunlight, direct airflow, dusty areas, any strong magnetic forces or in areas of excessively high humidity. Themachine does not like to be too dry or too moist with a level of 35% to 80% relativehumidity being ideal. Since you will be handling wet ink when refilling the bulk systemink, you should also protect any carpet or floor covering with mats.

Make sure that the entire printer base is sitting on a level, stable surface to support themachine. This means that all ground support feet must be safely on the same supportsurface.

This is an expensive and delicate inkjet printer that does NOT like being in a hotor cold shop or garage without proper air-conditioning controls. If left unattendedfor days or weeks in a hot dry environment the print heads will clog. ConsultChapter 9 –Preparing your T-Jet for Down Time for instructions on installingrefillable cleaning cartridges if you anticipate not using your machine for anextended period.

For convenience and efficiency, place your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM close to the heattransfer press or small conveyor dryer you will be using to curethe ink. If you have two or three printers set up as a productionwork station, arrange them all around or near the heat source.

At night, and when the printer is not in use, cover the machine tokeep it protected.

Important Point!

When printing white ink you must spray a pretreatmenton the shirts before printing. DO NOT spray thispretreatment near your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM. In fact, ifpossible, pretreat shirts in a different room entirely. At thevery least, make a simple cardboard enclosure to use forapplying pretreatment.

Pretreatment is sticky and candamage the printer’sEncoder Strip. The Encoder Strip is a thin piece of clearplastic with data that is read by the print head as the unitoperates. The Encoder Strip tells the head exactly whereto print an image. If the Encoder Strip gets dirty, theprinter will get confused printing multiple images, strips ofsolid ink and many other irregular printing patterns.

Page 19: User’sManual Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM - Equipment Zone€¦ · User’sManual Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM LF-2200 This manual contains the latest and most accurate information at the time of

SetupYour Authorized Service Tech will complete allthe basic set up of the machine, includingassembly of the base, printing bed rollers, bedalignment and leveling. He will also install theFastARTISTTM and FastRIPTM software on a PCthat should be placed on a table near themachine.

He will show you how to fill the bulk ink system, get the ink flowing and power up the printer. Hewill then do a head alignment and instruct you onproper printing procedures and maintenance of the machine.

Plugging the Unit into AC Power

The printer must be plugged into its own power source.

Do NOT plug the printer into the same circuit other high power use items, suchas a heat transfer press. A heat transfer press will cycle on and off, causingpower fluctuations and potentially ruining shirts.

For more the best results, plug the unit into a UPS (uninterruptible power supply)to help prevent ruined shirts during power fluctuations.

At a minimum, the printer should be plugged into a power strip with surgeprotection.

DO NOT TURN THE PRINTER ON YET! YOU MUST FIRST INSTALL THE BULK INKSYSTEM.

Important Point!

NEVER shut off your printer at the power strip; use the Main Power Switch on the actualunit (located adjacent the AC cord). When powering OFF, your inkjet printer goesthrough a shut down cycle that seats the head onto the capping stationso you won’t get head clogs. If you shut the unit off at the power strip it WILL NOT go through a normalshut down.

13

Connecting your T-Jet Jumbo 2TM to aComputer

You can connect the Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM to acomputer with a standard parallel cable, USB cable, oreven an IEEE 1394 FireWire cable. The machine comeswith a special gold tip USB cable; use this cable for bestresults.

In any situation, take care not to use an excessively longcable and do not use a switch box (which can oftencause communication problems).

Your computer needs to be a PC/Windows computer ifyou will be printing with white ink. For best results youshould use a computer with at least 1GB of RAM. RAMis inexpensive and if you can put 2GB or more on yourcomputer it will prevent problems when printing largefiles.

The Universal Serial Bus–USB–method of communication is standard on all newercomputers. However, it is not commonly known that there is only a certain amount ofpower supplied to the entire “bus.” This means that if you have a number of itemsplugged into different USB ports, this may cause communication issues between yourcomputer and the printer.

If possible, and for the best performance, use a dedicated computer to controlyour Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM and do not plug anything else into the extra USB portswhen printing to your printer.

Important Note: If you do not follow the recommended environment, power, maintenance and operating conditions you can void the warranty of your printer. TheFast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM does NOT like to be in a hot, dry shop with excess dust, as wellas being plugged into outlets with a lot of other items. Please read and understand theoperating conditions and maintenance requirements for your money making investment.

Page 21: User’sManual Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM - Equipment Zone€¦ · User’sManual Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM LF-2200 This manual contains the latest and most accurate information at the time of

Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM User’s Manual

Installing the Bulk Ink SystemYour T-Jet Jumbo2TM uses a special bulk ink system. Thebulk ink system holds about 200 ml of ink per color (x8)and allows for easy re-filling as needed. In order to preventdamage and ink leakage, your printer was not shipped withthe bulk system installed. It is shipped with Epson inkcartridges that will be swapped out for the new bulk systemduring installation. These cartridges do NOT contain textileink, but they should be saved for future transporting orshipping of the unit. Once you have removed them, store them in a cool dark location.

The bulk system that shipped with your printer may or may not look exactly likethe one shown to the right.

A Word About Bulk Systems

Each bulk ink cartridge has a smart chipthat is designed to always read Full.

Since a typical inkjet cartridge chip tellsthe printer when it is out of ink by countingthe number of ink drops fed through theprint head, that system can’t be used for an oversized bulk ink system like the one onyour T-Jet Jumbo2TM. If you print all day long, the Epson Ink Monitor might start toshow that you are low on ink based on the number of ink drops–when in fact yourcartridges still have ink.

Therefore, your T-Jet Jumbo2TM has an Automatic Chip Reset built into the unit. A Bedand Ink Control System on the printing bed has two orange buttons labeled Ink R andInk L. Should a flashing red light on the printer Control Panel warn you that you are outof ink, reset the cartridge chips by holding down each button for a few seconds until thelight turns solid green.

Changing Ink Brands

Your T-Jet Jumbo2TM shipped with FastINK2TM Textile Ink. With a normal inkjet printerit is very common to change from the manufacturers brand to third party inks withoutany problems. This can cause serious issues when using specially formulated textileinks. All textile inks are NOT created equal and they must not be mixed. If you everdecide to try another brand of textile ink in your printer, you MUST flush out the entirebulk ink system using special flushing solution (available from US Screen) before doingso. If you don’t do this, the mixture of both brands can turn to a chunky mess and form what might be called severe “cholesterol” in the ink tubes. In fact, this mixture may permanently clog the printing head.

Note: The T-Jet Jumbo2TM MUST use FastINK2TM when working with the specialwhite ink. You may only use older FastINKTM in a seven color (non-white ink)system. For further details refer to Appendix A.

1. Protect your work area with paper towels, newspaperor a painter’s drop cloth because the ink will permanently stain most surfaces. You arealso advised to wear disposable gloves to preventskin irritation. The starter kit for your Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM includes 8 oz. (250 ml) bottles ofCyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black FastINK2TM

along with 1 liter of white. You will also have 8continuous flow ink cartridges and funnels; 1 for each color and 4cartridges dedicated for white.

2. To fill the cartridge, pull off the rubber cap andplace the funnel into the hole. Slowly pour in theink. When adding ink, lift the funnel out of thehole slightly, to allow air to escape as ink fillsthe container.

Note: DO NOT overfill the cartridge. There isa plastic marker in the center of thecartridge that tells you when you havereached the maximum ink level.

3. Reseal the cartridge by placing the rubber cap back into the hole. Repeat steps 1and 2 for each color.

NOTE: The newer bulk systems for this typeof inkjet printer are CLOSED systems. Thismeans the rubber caps must be tight toprevent a loss of vacuum. An ink pump isused to improve ink flow during high speedprinting.

Note: Follow the color coding on the cartridgefor the correct ink color. White FastINK will be used in cartridges 1-4.

Important Point!

You received the Epson 7800 Operating Manual with your Fast T-Jet Jumbo 2TM.This was included because the manual contains details on how to perform certainmaintenance routines, head alignments, troubleshooting and the general operation ofthe printer.

However, in order to print on garments, which requires significantly more ink thanprinting on paper, we have changed certain functions of the printer. The main change isthe Ink Levers that are used to hold the ink cartridges in place. On the original 7800these levers are also used to apply air pressure to the cartridges. On the Fast T-JetJumbo 2TM, these Ink Levers are ONLY used to lock the cartridge in place and releasethe air pressure. You will RARELY use these levers and their operation will be differentthan outlined in the Epson 7800 manual.

During maintenance routines you may be prompted to raise or lower the ink levers. YouDO NOT do this at the lever. You must press the L button or R button for the Left orRight lever function.

4. Once all the cartridges have been filled, press thegreen “L & R”buttons on the side control panel. These buttons are the same as raising the inklevers on a normal Epson 7800.

When working with the bulk ink cartridges –removing, filling, replacing, etc., you must ALWAYS press the two L & R greenbuttons FIRST before you lower or raise the ink levers.

When all the cartridges are in place,LOWER the ink levers for both sets. You will then be prompted on the LCD controlpanel to “Lower the Ink Levers.” At this time, press the green L & R buttons.

Press the green L buttonand raise the blue ink lever when prompted. You will have to execute this proceduretwice more before the remainder of the power cleaning becomes automatic.

Note: Power cleanings use ink to flush the system. Do them only whennecessary. Keep an eye on your maintenance tank and do not let it overflow.

Replenishing Ink Levels

As you print, you will use ink and levels inyour bulk system cartridges will drop. Whendoing a lot of dark shirts, you might see thewhite ink levels drop more rapidly than othercolors. The system is designed to be easy torefill using the supplied funnels and ink, sotop off the bulk system as often asnecessary.

Important Point!
