    1 Rift TD Features

Rift TDis an advanced three-dimensional Digital Terrain Model

specifically developed to model tailings deposition.

    Rift TD:

Is independent and not reliant on other software packages.

Has a sophisticated editing environment that supports both manual and

    visual data entry.

Data is easily copied to the clipboard for reporting or for use in other software.

    Tailings Deposition Featuresinclude:

Model tailings flow down valleys and around obstacles.

Model upstream, centreline or downstream deposition.Model cyclone deposition.

Define multiple deposition nodes and/or deposition lines.

Define cyclone, sub-aerial and sub-aqueous beach profiles.

    Define non-linear beach profiles.

    Define multiple materials.

Deposition points move in space as they are raised.

Regenerate deposition surfaces following a deposition model run.

    Automatic or manual deposition modes.

    Surface Modelling Featuresinclude:

Import ASCII or DXF data files.

    Multiple surface support.

Embankment Wizard to facilitate embankment modelling.

Pond Wizard to generate pond elevation/area/volume curves.

String operations to facilitate complex model development.

    Extract longitudinal and cross sections.

    Volume calculations between terrain models.

    Merge terrain models.

    2 Glossary

Basin (Tailings): A basin into which tailings is deposited. It may natural or

    constructed.

Beach Profile: The linear or non-linear profile (longitudinal section)

along a tailings beach.Rift TDdefines three Beach Profile

    types:

Cyclone Beach Profile (applicable to upstream cyclone

    deposition)

    Sub-aerial Beach Profile

    Sub-aqueous Beach Profile

These are combined to form a complex beach profile that

defines the entire beach from the deposition point to the

    pond base.

Beachhead: The location at which deposition occurs i.e. the start of

    the tailings beach.

Complex Beach Profile (Complex Profile): The profile describing the tailings beach from the

deposition point to the pond base. It comprises one or

more beach profiles. Rift TDdefines three beach profile

    types:

Cyclone Beach Profile (applicable to upstream cyclone

    deposition)

    Sub-aerial Beach Profile

    Sub-aqueous Beach Profile

Consolidation (Tailings) The process during which the tailings mass decrease in

volume due to an applied stress; soil particles are packed

more tightly together. During tailings consolidation this is

    generally accompanied by water expulsion.

Cyclone/Hydrocyclone A device used to classify or separate tailings particles.

The incoming stream is divided into to streams:

Underflow comprising coarser particles with a lower

water content than the incoming stream.

Overflow comprising finer particles with a higher

water content than the incoming stream.

Cyclone Beach The section of beach developed using tailings underflow

from a cyclone during upstream cyclone deposition. These

beaches tend to be relatively steep and short.

Cyclone Deposition The process whereby tailings is classified into underflow

    (coarser/dryer) and overflow (finer/wetter) components

prior to, or during tailings deposition. Cyclone deposition

    may be:

    Upstream;

    Centreline; or

    Downstream.

    Glossary

    2015 Rift Software

    3

Deposition (Tailings) The process whereby tailings is deposited as a slurry. The

slurry typically flows down a tailings beach to a

supernatant pond. Material segregates along the beach,

with coarser material settling closer to the beachhead

(deposition point). The beach-material typically becomesprogressively finer along the beach in the direction of the

    supernatant pond.

Centreline Deposition Deposition points are raised vertically. A downstream

embankment is constructed to contain tailings; this

embankment may be constructed of tailings. A centreline

embankment contributes significant to facility stability.

Downstream Deposition Deposition points move in the opposite direction to which

tailings is deposited. A downstream embankment is

constructed to contain tailings; this embankment may be

constructed of tailings. A downstream embankment is

often a containment structure that provides facilitystability.

Upstream Deposition Deposition points move in the direction that tailings is

deposited. A small embankment may be constructed to

contain discharged tailings; it has little or not contribution

    to facility stability.

Deposition Line Rift TDdefinition: A line used to generate a series of

Deposition Vectors. Deposition Lines are lines in space

through which Deposition Vectors pass. Deposition Points

are generated along the Deposition Vectors as elevations

    are raised.

Deposition Node Rift TDdefinition: A node that is used to generate a

Deposition Vector. The Deposition Node is a point in space

through which the Deposition Vector passes. Deposition

Points are generated along the Deposition Vector as

    deposition elevations are raised.

Deposition Point A point in space from which tailings deposition occurs.

Deposition Vector A line in space along which deposition points are

generated. Deposition Vectors are generated using

Deposition Points/Deposition Lines and Vector S lopes.

Lift (Raise) Rift TDdefinition: A complete deposition cycle from all

    active Deposition Vectors.

Raise (Lift) Rift TDdefinition: A complete deposition cycle from all

    active Deposition Vectors.

Raise Data Rift TDdefinition: Data that defines how deposition

    3 Licensing

Rift Softwarelicensing is flexible, allowing licences to be exchanged between computers via an

    internet connection.

    The following limitations are imposed:

Computers must be on the same Internet Protocol (IP) network.

Computers must be on the same physical network.

You are required to register Rift TDwhen first running it following a new install. Information

gathered during registration is used for:

    Licence validation.

    Licence exchange.

    User licence tracking.

To exchange an active Licence it is first released. By default licences are automatically released onexiting Rift TD. They can however be locked to a computer and manually released as required; this is

useful you expect to use Rift TDremotely or you expect to lose your internet connection.

Following release the Licence is available to other users connected to the same Company Account.

    NOTE:

Licences are purchased based on physical location i.e. licence cost is based on the number of

Licences that will be used primarily at the same physical location.

You are allowed to use licences remotely as long as you are working for the same office that

purchased the licence. This does not include long term secondments (in excess of threemonths).

For up to date licence costs visit our website.

    3.1 Registration

The Register Dialog is displayed when first activating a Rift Softwareproduct on a new computer.

Allows licences to be linked to Company Accounts (for licence exchange).

During registration you are required to provide User and Company data. Existing Users/Companies

should log on to their existing accounts.

Following registration an evaluation licence is generated and your Rift Software product is activated.

On expiry of the evaluation period it's possible to activate released full licences that are linked to the

Company Account. Alternatively it will be necessary to arrange for an extension of the evaluation

period or acquire a Full licence.
