They are of many different kinds, butit is believed that they were mainly the result of after action of preCambrian intrusions or were leached from old rocks by hot waters atconsiderable depth. The rocks in which they are contained aremainly granites, gneissesy and schists of various kinds; most com-mGnly the ores am amphibolite, h"bbro. The eruption of lava :flows at thesurface is no doubt usually accompanied by intrusions underneaththem, and there is likewise little doubt that the great masses of postJurassic intrusions were accompanied by now eroded lava flows. GEOLOGIO INTBODUOTION. 15sive rocks of Mesozoic or early Tertiary age are abundant in allparts of the region and consist of veins, contact-metamorphic deposits, and replacement deposits in limestone away from the immediatevicinity of igneous rocks.

Contact-metamorphic deposits in zones of garnet and othersilicates adjoining intrusive rocks are particularly abundant, and asexcellent examples may be mentioned those of the Clifton, Bisbee,Saddle Mountain, Twin Buttes, Silver Bell, and Washington districts. The gold-bearing veins of Yavapai County are probably ofMesozoic age and appear around smaller monzonite intrusions inpre-Cambrian schists. The veins near Kingman are likewise ass0-ciated with intrusions of porphyry in pre-Cambrian schist. Copper, gold, silver, lead, and zinc are the principal metals found in theveins of these classes, but tungsten and molybdenum also occur.Chalcocite blanket deposits, due to concentration of lean primarydisseminations by descending surface waters, connected with thesame epochs of mineralization are mined at Clifton, Ray, and Globe, and prospected at a number of other places. The deposits of the late Tertiary epoch are generally veins and arecontained in rhyolitic and andesitic lavas; they are widely scattered, the most prominent examples being those of the BlackRange, along Colorado River north of Needles, where the noted GoldRoad mine is situated. Similar veins occur in the Kofa district,Yuma County; in the Mammoth district, Pinal County; and at someplaces in the Santa Rita Range, Santa Cruz County. The well-knownCommonwealth mine, in the Pearce district, Cochise County, alsobelongs to the same class. These veins generally carry gold andsilver, but in places also copper, lead, and m o l y ~ d e n u m . Placersare known principally in regions of metallic aureoles around intrusions of granular rocks, but they can rarely be worked, on accountof the scarcity of water; dry washing is often resorted to on a smallscale. Among the best-known placer regions are those of Yumaand La Paz, along Colorado River; Red Hill, in Yavapai County;Quijotoa and Greaterville, in Pima CountYi and Dos Cabezas, inCochise County. After this general review the individual ranges and their mineralization may be briefly mentioned.

The southeastern. mountains, including the Peloncillo, Chiricahua, and Pinaleno ranges, are not rich in valuable deposits, ,thoughmineralized at several points, notably at Dos Cabezas and Paradise. The well-known copper deposits of the Clifton-Morenci district aresituated near the New Mexico line, near the southern. boundary ofthe plau,au province, but in no distinct structural range.Next to the west, in Cochise and Graham counties, follow fromsouth to north the Mule Pass and Dragoon ranges, both stronglymineralized and containing many types of depOSits, most prominent

The ore deposits of Colorado are confined to the western or mountainous haH of the State, but within this area they are not by anymeans uniformly distributed. Parts of the area near the western andnorthwestern borders belong to the plateau province of little-disturbed rocks. These contain only a special class of copper and rare-deposits.
