The main search interface
The main search interface
Search by using All Fields and Deadline. This search will look for opportunities containing the term “Higher Education” and those with deadlines on or before December 31, 2006 or those with continuous or undefined deadlines.

You can also use the Main Search form to search or browse by COS Keywords
Browse the COS Keywords hierarchy or search for a specific keyword at the bottom of the keyword browser.
Click on the hyperlinked name of the keyword to add it to your search form.

The terms you choose will appear on your search form
Tip: Selecting the explode option will include all terms in the hierarchy underneath the chosen keyword.
e.g. Exploding the keyword “Education” will include the 150+ terms within that category such as Higher Education, Special Education and Women’s Education.
You can also indicate which requirements you meet, your citizenship, and where you would like to use the funding.
Tip: Hold the ‘Control’ (PC) or ‘Open Apple’ (Mac) key to select more than one item from a picklist.

By default, the results list is sorted by relevancy, but you can choose to sort it by Grant Title, Sponsor, Deadline or Amount. Click on any of the hyperlinked column headings to sort the list by your desired criteria.
For Example, if you click on ‘Grant Title’ the entire results list will be re-sorted.

Simple Search
This interface is for basic searching. Entering free text in the text box will search all of the Funding Opportunities fields for your search criteria.

Search Wizard
Use the Funding Opportunities Search Wizard for a step-by-step process to help you set up your funding search.

Then, indicate which funding type you would like to receive.
Note: As you fill in your search criteria, the Search Summary on the left side of the screen will show what you’ve chosen so far. It will also tell you how many opportunities your search currently returns. You may choose to see those results at any time.

Search Methods – And / Or / Not You can use these special words to connect your search
terms for specific results:
• AND – returns opportunities containing all of the parameters you set
e.g., searching for WIND AND ENERGY will find profiles containing the word WIND and the word ENERGY somewhere in the field(s) you are searching.
• OR – returns opportunities containing any of the parameters you set
e.g. searching for WIND OR ENERGY will find all records that contain the word WIND or the word ENERGY, or both.
• NOT – lets you exclude parameterse.g., searching for WIND NOT ENERGY will find records that contain the word WIND but do not contain the word ENERGY.

Search Language – other tricks
You can use these special characters to connect your search terms for specific results:
• Wild Card * – find variations on a word
e.g., ENVIROMENT* finds profiles with words such as ENVIRONMENTAL and ENVIRONMENTS.
• Proximity w/# – find words used together but not necessarily in an exact phrase
e.g., WIND w/2 ENERGY finds profiles where these two words are separated by not more than two words, such as those with the phrase WIND TURBINE ENERGY.

Search Language – more tricks You can use these special characters to connect your search
terms for specific results:
• Exact Phrase “ ” – find a precise phrase.
e.g., WIND ENERGY in quotation marks finds profiles where these two words appear together as a phrase.
• Precedence ( ) – execute a series of search commands in a particular order.
e.g., (HIV OR AIDS) NOT EDUCATION finds profiles with the terms HIV and/or AIDS, then excludes those with the word EDUCATION.

Refine Your Query
Start with a broader search, then narrow it down by searching within your results. This example shows a search with 973 initial results.
Click “Refine Your Query” at the top of the page to narrow this cancer search.

You will be taken back to the main search form that will show you your previous choices. Add “lung” to your original search of “cancer” to search within the initial 973 results.

Save Search
The Save Search option will allow you to save searches that you have created to your COS Workbench.

You will then be asked to choose a name for your search. If you are at an institution that subscribes to COS Funding Alert you will also be asked if you would like to receive e-mail about this alert.
Click “Save This Search” when satisfied.

The “Lung Cancer” search has been saved to your list of Funding Searches.
To run this saved search any time in the future, log in to your Workbench and click “Run.” The search will be done against any new or updated information that has been incorporated to the database since you saved your search.
Tip: You can save up to 20 Funding searches at a time on your COS Workbench.

Record Track
You can track individual Funding Opportunities on your Workbench and be notified when those records are updated.
Click “Track this record on my Workbench.”

The “Understanding and Treating Tuberous Sclerosis Complex” opportunity has been added to my tracked opportunities. Whenever the opportunity is updated by the COS editors, it will be marked as “Recently Updated” on your Workbench.
