What do the products look like and willthey work?

EcoBlend™ Type 1 sub-base is made by mixingcrushed construction waste such as concreteand brick with a quarried rock such as limestoneor granite. It is graded from dust to 50mm insize and is dark grey. It complies with SHW 803which is the specification used by LocalAuthorities to build roads and footpaths.

EcoSand is paving sand made from bottles youmay put out for recycling. The glass is crushed,graded and washed to produce clean sandwhich is green in colour. It is safe to handle,but we recommend you use protective gloveswhen handling any of our aggregates. Theproduct complies with BS 7533-3:2005 whichis the standard used to specify the materialsused to lay block paving.

Kiln Dried EcoSand is also made from postconsumer waste glass. The glass sand is driedthen double screened. It is designed for use as

jointing or grouting sand during block pavingapplications. The product complies with BS 7533 pt.3 1997.

Where do I purchase these materials?

If you are based in the London or the South Eastarea, you can purchase the material from a rangeof Builders Merchants. Address details of stockistsin these areas are detailed on the reverse.

How will it arrive?

Both products can be supplied in bulk jumbobags or loose. Calculate how much you willneed of each product and give a day on whichyou want the delivery. A large lorry will arrivewith the material ready to be tipped if loose, orlifted off if bagged.

Are they expensive?

No. Our recycled aggregates are generallycheaper than aggregates from quarries.

Step 1Calculate the materials and equipment youwill need.

You will need to work out the area to bepaved and use the calculation below to workout how much EcoBlend™ and EcoSand youwill need.

EcoBlend™(m2 x 0.150*) x 1.90 = tonnes required

EcoSand(m2 x 0.050*) x 1.60 = tonnes required

Kiln Dried EcoSand – one 25kg bag issufficient for approximately 5m2.

* Depths may alter depending on groundconditions.

If purchasing in bulk jumbo bags, assume0.85 tonnes per bag.

Establish the delivery notice required from your builders merchant to make sure you order the materials in time to suit your project.

Step 2Clear the area to be paved and dig out theexisting ground to give a finished level atleast two bricks down from the damp proofcourse around your house.

You will need to create a fall of 1:80 to allowthe rainwater to fall across the paved areaaway from the house or any other structures.

Step 3Install your drainage and construct thekerbs or edging blocks following themanufacturer’s instructions.

Step 4Place the EcoBlend™ sub-base at aminimum depth of 100mm but ideally at150mm, maintaining the falls you createdwhen excavating.

Compact the surface using a vibrating platecompactor. Be sure that you have a firmsurface with the correct falls.

Step 5Spread the EcoSand to a depth of 50mmand compact the layer with the platevibrator and spread a further 15mm ofsharp sand over the area as a loose screed.

Correctly level the screed with a truestraight edged piece of timber whilemaintaining any falls.

Step 6Lay one course of blocks on the sand alongall edge restraints following themanufacturer’s guidance notes. They maybe laid lengthways against the edge(stretcher course, which can be laid inmultiple courses) or with the short sideagainst the edge (soldier course).

Step 7Lay the blocks hand tight only, with a jointgap of 2-5mm, starting in one corner andat the bottom if there is a slope. Lay blocksfrom at least three packs to ensure evendistribution of colour.

If laying a 45 degree herringbone pattern,put a string line across the area parallel to abuilding or fence line and lay blocks alongthe line.

Cut in at edges using a block cutter orbolster chisel and club hammer. Avoid usingpieces smaller than one quarter of a blockand do not make them too tight.

Step 8Sweep the area thoroughly, particularly if ablock cutter has been used.

If there are any damaged blocks, this is thetime to replace them.

Step 9Compact the whole area with three or fourpasses of the plate vibrator in perpendiculardirections and overlapping.

Step 10Sweep Kiln Dried EcoSand over the entirearea, ensuring it gets into all the jointsbetween blocks. One 25kg bag is sufficientfor approximately five square metres.

Kiln Dried EcoSand should not be applied inwet weather, as it will not fill the jointsproperly.

Step 11Fill any gaps which appear in the joints andvibrate the whole area again.

Repeat until there are no gaps and leaveany surplus sand for the wind and rain towash into joints as they settle.
