Using library resources during the COVID-19 crisis
Unfortunately we have had to close the physical library for the duration of the crisis. This does mean that our book
stock is not available, nor is it possible to request books from other libraries. However the majority of our resources
are electronic and are available via our website as long as you have an NHS Open Athens account.
This guide will explain what an Athens account is and how to create one as well as highlighting the key online
resources available including the healthcare databases such as MEDLINE and CINAHL. We have also included direct
links to COVID-19 material available from our key resources. Remember it is still possible to request journal articles
either via the library catalogue or by emailing [email protected]
If you need information about a specific subject and are not sure where to look or which resource would be most
relevant do contact us.

any time, 24/7 from work or home.

NHS Open Athens Athens is an access management system that provides you with a username and password so you can access the range of online resources available to NHS staff and students on placement. No Athens account...no access!
To register for an NHS Athens account go to https://openathens.nice.org.uk
Fill in the registration form:
It is quickest to register using your NHS email address (e.g. [email protected])
Begin typing your NHS Trust/Organisation by keyword and select the correct entry from the drop-down list
(e.g. Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust)
Tick the box to agree once you have read the ‘Terms and Conditions’ and ‘Privacy Notice’, then click Register.
You will receive an email containing your username and a verification link. Click on the link to activate the account. You will be
prompted to create your own password.

Access has been made available to NHS staff via NHS OpenAthens until the end of June.

Journals page or the Healthcare Databases Advanced Search page.
The NHS does not subscribe to every national or international
healthcare journal. Some will be available online as full text,
others you will need to request from the library.
