The Experiment

A farmer wants to test two types of beans to select the best one. He wants to know which one grows faster. He did a test using red and black beans.

The ResultThe Black Bean

ResultsRed Bean

The amount of sunlight on both was the same

Thinking!

• Which bean grew faster – red or black?

• How do you know that?

Thinking

• OK, so you are telling me that you are comparing the day elapsed and the growth of plant.

• Am I correct I correct in saying that?

Thinking

• As you observe, measure and record do the values change or remain the same?

• How do you know that?• What is one word to describe when something

changes from one value to another?– Vary– varies– variable

Thinking

• The day and the height are variables. They change from day to day. What is one thing that remains the same in the experiment?

• The sun/sunlight. How many hours per day?• So, sunlight remains the same for both plants.

What is one word to describe that?– Sunlight is ‘constant’.

Summary

• Measuring growth of bean plants.• There are two Variables:– Day and – Height

• The constant is the sunlight

GraphStudents chart the table on graph paper provided. They may draw the plant!

X and y axis

• Height• Day

• The idea- they can name the axis anything.• But:• Why is it appropriate to call it x and y?• Probe ..

How to remember which is x and which is y axis

• We run before we rise or whatever

• If you know your abc, you will know x comes before y.

Coordinates• Students name the co-or• Ask (3, 9) – why

Point of originSlope: Which one is steeper! What association does it have withGrowth?
