Plan your presentation

First, sketch out your idea

• Outline

• Storyboard plot

• Steve Jobs planned with pen and paper

Power of three

Divide presentations into three parts

• The Steve Jobs way

• Playwrights know three is more

dramatic than two

• Three is also more memorable than six

© 2011 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 11

Main point

What’s one thing audience should

remember?

• Listener needs to see “big picture”

before details

© 2011 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 12

Keep content focused

Single slide drives single point

• Main idea with support points

• If more than one point, split into different slides

© 2011 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 13

Provide details separately

Present only key ideas

• Too much information confusing

• Handouts can provide details

• Can also provide links

PowerPoint as a visual tool

People remember visuals better than bullet points

• Text-filled slide not engaging

• Audience not there to read

• Recall more effective when text and image combined

© 2011 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 16

Keep slides simple

Few words are more powerful

• If audience is reading, they are not listening

• No more than five bullet points

Think like designer

Empty space is another element

Learn to see it and manipulate it

Provides clarity and interest

Use grid

Good for achieving alignment

Gives clean, well-organized look

Legibility

Smaller than 18-point font hard to read

Delivery

Presentation is a creative act

More in common with films than documents

• Live talks must tell story

• Enhanced by imagery

• Other multimedia, demos, videos, various speakers

Connect with audience - emotionally

Bring energy and passion to your delivery

• Never an excuse for being dull

• Don’t be afraid to wear passion on sleeve

• Powerful ways to motivate others

“ Passion, emotion, and enthusiasm are grossly

underestimated ingredients in professional

business communications.

Carmine Gallo, “The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs”

Connect with audience – physically

Remove barriers

• Avoid podiums

• Use wireless microphone

• Use remote control

• Keep lights on – audience must

see you

• Move around freely and naturally

Practice a lot

Steve Jobs would spend hours rehearsing

• Seems effortless because of practice
