 How  to  Read  eBooks  Using  the  3M  Cloud  Service  

 3M  Cloud  is  an  eBooks  lending  system  for  full  color  eBooks  that  you  can  download  and  read  via  the  3M  Cloud  Library  app.  Access  your  eBooks  across  different  devices,  including  iPads,  iPhones,  Android  phones  and  devices,  Nooks,  Kobos,  Macs,  and  PCs.      Step  1:    Gather  your  information  

• An  eligible  library  card  number  (or  username)  and  library  PIN  • A  device  to  read  the  book:    personal  computer,  Nook,  Sony,  or  Kobo  eReader,  

Android  smart  phone  or  tablet,  Kindle  Fire  or  an  iPod  Touch,  iPhone  or  iPad    Step  2:    Find  a  Book    You  can  find  3M  titles  in  the  library  catalog  at  https://marinet.lib.ca.us/  or  you  can  go  directly  to  the  3M  service.        

             

• Browse  the  collection  of  books  by  Shelves  or  Categories • or  Search  for  a  specific  title

     

   

Start  from  the  Marin  County  Library  website:  www.marinlibrary.org    • Under    Quick Links,  click  on    

“Download eBooks & more,”    • Choose  3M Cloud Library  

   

Start  by  installing  the    3M  Cloud  App  on  your  mobile  device  (see  Steps  4  and  5),  then  browse  and  checkout  through  the  app.

• Under  the  Categories  Tab,  use  the  dropdown  menu  on  the  right  hand  side  to  limit  your  search  to  available  books.    Or,  broaden  the  search  to  include  the  entire  3M  Cloud  library,  and  if  you  see  books  not  owned  by  Marin  County,  add  them  to  the  wish  list.  

 

       Step  3:    Check  Out  a  Book.    

• Click  on  a  title  that  interests  you  and  3M  Cloud  will  prompt  you  to  login  with  your  library  card  number  and  PIN.    

• Click  on  the  Check Out  button.

Step  4:    Get  a  reading  App  to  read  the  book.    A  mobile  app  for  a  smart  phone  or  tablet,  the  Mac  or  PC  app  for  laptops  and  desktops,  or  use  the  PC  App  to  transfer  to  your  eReader.    

 

• From  your  mobile  device,  go  to  your  App  store  and  search  for  3M  Cloud  Library.  

• Download  the  free  App  onto  your  device.  

OR    

 

• From  the  3M  Cloud  site  at  your  computer,  click  on  the  Reader  Apps  button.  

• Choose  the  App  that  is  right  for  your  device,  download  and  install  it.  

 

• iOS  App  -­‐  iPod,  iPad,  iPhone  • Android  App  -­‐  Android  tablets  and  smartphones  • PC  App  -­‐  Windows  computer  and  to  transfer  to  

eReaders  • Nook  App  -­‐  Nook  Color  or  Tablet  • Mac  App  –  Mac  desktop  or  laptop  (must  use  Safari  to  

download  the  App)  • Kindle  Fire  App  -­‐  (3M  Cloud  is  not  compatible  with  

regular  Kindles)      Step  5:  Read  your  book…  on  your  mobile  device  by  logging  in  to  the  App.    

• Find  your  library,  then  • Use  your  library  card  number  (or  username)  and  PIN  to  log  into  3M  Cloud.

                   Read  your  book…on  your  Nook  or  Kobo  eReader  by  transferring  it  from  your  computer.  

• Download  the  Windows  or  Mac  3M  Cloud  app  to  your  computer.  • Install/open  the  application.    The  PC  and  Mac  applications  require  an  Adobe  ID  

to  manage  digital  rights  when  transferring  to  a  Nook  or  Kobo  Reader.    When  you  open  the  application,  you  can  use  an  existing  Adobe  ID,  if  you  have  one,  or  have  one  automatically  generated.    Make  sure  to  use  an  existing  one  if  you  have  one.  

• Plug  your  eReader  into  your  computer  and  the  3M  Cloud  app  will  recognize  it  and  give  you  the  option  to  transfer  a  book  to  your  eReader  from  the  My Books page.  

 Step  6:    Explore  other  features  

• Check  out  more  titles,  manage  your  holds,  and  manage  your  account,  from  the  3M  Cloud  website  or  from  your  device.    

• Tap  on  the  top  of  the  screen  for  more  mobile  app  features.    

       

     

 

Find  new  books  by  browsing  Shelves,  Categories or    Search  for  a  specific  title.  

Download  and  read  books  you  have  checked  out  from  the  My Books tab.    

 

Take  notes  and  add  bookmarks      Change  the  font  size  and  background      Close  the  reader  to  get  back  to  the  3M  App  and  your  other  titles.

Quick  Tips    

• Once  you  have  downloaded  and  installed  the  App,  you  can  search  for  and  check  out  books  directly  from  the  App.    You  do  not  need  a  PC.  

• There  are  some  variations  in  how  the  App  is  downloaded  to  each  individual  device.    Follow  any  screen  instructions  for  your  own  device.  

   

FAQs    How  many  books  can  I  check  out?   8  maximum  checked  out.    These  don’t  count  

against  your  other  checkouts.  Can  I  put  books  on  hold?   Yes  -­‐  up  to  10  titles  can  be  held.    Set  up  an  email  

address  within  3M  Cloud  for  notifications  when  they  are  available.  Cancel  holds  through  the  MyBooks  tab.  

Can  I  return  books  early?   Books  expire  automatically  after  the  checkout  period,  but  you  can  return  them  early  using  the  CheckIn  feature.  

How  long  can  I  keep  the  books?   21  days  Can  I  renew  books?   No.    But  if  there  is  no  hold  on  the  book,  you  can  

check  it  out  again  immediately.  Do  I  need  a  separate  account  for  the  3M  Cloud  service?  

No.    You  use  your  library  card  and  PIN  to  access  the  service.  

   Troubleshooting  Tips    

• Make  sure  you  use  the  same  login  credentials  for  every  login.    If  you  use  a  username  and  PIN  for  one,  and  your  library  card  number  and  PIN  for  another,  all  your  books  may  not  show  up  in  all  places.  

• If  you  click  on  the  link  “Go  to  full  library  catalog”  you  end  up  in  the  Marin  County  Library  catalog  –  go  back  to  the  3M  App  and  click  on  Shelves  or  Categories  to  browse  in  the  3M  Cloud  Library.
