T H E U N I V E R S I T Y O F S O U T H E R N M I S S I S S I P P I
The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi is pleased to welcome you to our 2009-10 Concert Series. We are proud to continue the Sound Tradition of exciting, innovative and quality concerts the School of Music has been bringing to our community for 100 years. We are quite confident that in this year’s Series there is something that every music lover will find attractive. From classical to jazz to musical theater, from solo performances to chamber
music to combined orchestral and choral works, our Series will entertain, educate and feed the soul of every listener. This year we are pleased to introduce the Connoisseurs Chamber Music Series as an addition to our standing Concert Series. The Connoisseurs Series is dedicated to bringing the finest chamber music ensembles to our community in a variety of venues.
The year 2010 marks the Centennial of The University of Southern Mississippi. The School of Music, the College of Arts and Letters, the Mississippi Opera and the Centennial Committee are proud to present The Voice of the Century as the premier Centennial Celebration arts event. International opera sensation Renée Fleming will perform with our very own Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the Centennial of our university. The School of Music will also present PRISM, a fast-paced, action-packed showcase of the instrumental program featuring the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band, the Penhorwood Requiem, a world premiere of a commissioned work for orchestra and choir based on the devastation and recovery of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, and Ragtime, the first musical theater production staged through the combined efforts and resources of the School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
The 2009-10 Concert Series is presented in this booklet in subheadings according to musical genre and ensemble type. We present it this way so that music patrons can go directly to their areas of interest when searching for concerts to attend. If you want to search the Series by dates, there is a complete list of the concerts in the back of the booklet. We hope you will keep the booklet for easy reference, and we look forward to seeing you at all of our concert events this season. Enjoy!!
