ctober 20141

The summer has passed quickly, some have already put their boat up for the season and others are still in the water and will be in the water until the end. I am just a procrastinator, knowing that I have to get the boat out but delaying the process. Three areas that I would like to address at this time are, sharing information from the Governing Board, encouraging members to participate in our monthly meetings and to continue with the Self Education portion of the United States Power Squadron triangle The Fall Governing Board in Arlington was informative. There will be a dues increase, from National for 2015. There was a representative from the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the United States Coast Guard. As members of the United States Power Squadron, we are recognized as experienced recreational boaters. There has been a significant decrease in the Coast Guard, and their role continues in Search and Rescue. The additional eyes of Power Squadron members are of great benefit. Please remember to report any suspicious activities. Finally NOAA continues with their role in weather prediction and in maintaining charts. It is through the Power Squadron Co-OP Charting Program that information regarding chart changes gets conveyed to NOAA. There is a form on line that can be used to share this information. If you would like additional information about either or these programs please contact me. Thank you again to all who have planned the events of the summer. We will have speakers for our October and November Meetings. Information will be forthcoming when details have been finalized. Thank you to the P/C’s who have stepped up to coordinate these events. Events and meeting programs are in the works for 2015. We are planning to be off to a great start. Finally, I would like to address a concern that was identified at the September Executive Committee Meeting. Many members have not taken either an Advanced Grade or Elective course. I encourage you to talk with your boat insurance provider. Often there are additional discounts offered for additional classes that you successfully completed. Fall and winter are great seasonal opportunities to take a class. Our instructors are ready and waiting for you to register. The Education Department Please contact Lt/C Kurt Hansen, AP or P/C Michael Pipia, AP regarding classes.

It is that time again to think about education. We started Boating Classes on Sept. 22, 2014 at GPNHS at 7pm and had one new student show up for Basic Boating. He saw our notice on the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce web site, our new outreach thanks to P/C Michael Babairz. P/C Bill Stano and I started working with him and would still like to others to come sign up and take classes. We will keep USPS University registration open for the next few weeks. P/C Mike Pipia would like to encourage others return to boating classes and offer Seamanship/Piloting, maybe free or at a reduced rate. We are considering an option of those who would like to donate back used books, to reduce cost as well to help. What do you think? I want to thank Bruce Boutin, P/C Mike Pipia, and John Sulkowski for attending the Metro Boat Show on Saturday, Sept. 13 to hand out boating information and encourage the public to attend classes and consider joining our civic organization. As we close the boating season here in Michigan, P/C Bill Stano would like all the Vessel Safety Examiners to return unused stickers to him so they can be sent back to National, and thank you for a job well done. Anyone interested in training to become a VSE, please contact Bill

The summer is over. It is time to run your boats one last time before having to put them up for the winter. Thankfully, we have a great agenda for closing out the last three months of the year, 2014. We start with the monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of the month. Remember, you are welcome to call the dining room, 313-884-2500, and make reservation for before the meeting.

6pm works best for the 7:30pm meeting. Credit cards only. We are trying a GPS seminar for the October meeting 10/8. Saturday, Oct. 11 there is a steak roast at Farms Pier Park with a Comedian for entertainment. Don’t forget Oct. 17-19 is the D-9 Fall conference in Bay City. . The theme for the Friday night hospitality suite is Halloween. Come dressed up in your favorite costumes for a great time. Saturday dinner includes tickets to the Planetarium Digital 360 Theater across the street. November’s meeting, 11/12, is nominations for next year Bridge and we hope to have a Nautical Speaker. Anyone interested in being on the bridge or E Board should contact P/C Bob Maliki ([email protected]), P/C Michael Babiarz ([email protected]), or P/C Joan McCarron ([email protected]). December we close out the year with our Annual Christmas Dinner Party, which I am busy planning the menu for, and elections at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Wednesday, 12/10/14. Don’t forget to pick up a toy to donate to Toys for Tots at the party.

SEO ReportLt/C Kurt Hansen, AP

Let’s hear some feedback. We had great attendance to the summer classes at GP Farms Pier Park but now we start the Fall with only 1 student. We have a number of members who have only taken Basic Boating when we have 5 Advanced Grade classes offered. We are going to try something new by offering a condensed version of the GPS Seminar at our October meeting to improve attendance and promote education. But USPS has 23 other seminars available, also. USPS is starting to offer classes and seminars on line so that people can take them at a time when it is convenient for them. On Line classes are America’s Boating Course, Partners in Command, Boating on Rivers, Locks and Lakes, and Weather for Boaters. Coming soon will be the Seminars, Hurricanes and Boats, Marine Radar VHS/DSC Marine Radio. How would you like to receive further education? Would you take a class if the price was reduced? Would you want a used book to control cost? What is keeping you back? Please let us know. These are challenging times and we are here to serve you.

Here it is October and there is so much going on. Bill and I just got back from Washington, D.C. happy and rested after spending 5 days with our D9 and USPS friends at the Governing Board. There is nothing so rejuvenating as gathering with 500 plus old friends and likeminded boaters who are excited about our goals and mission. On the Squadron level it may seem like we don’t accomplish much but when we all get together and share, it is amazing . Bill had never been to D.C. so we took one day to visit Arlington, walk the Mall and see all the monuments from Lincoln to the Capital and see the Bill of Right and Declaration of Independence in the Archives. Good to do between all the meetings. Anyone who wants to escape this winter and come to USPS National Conference in Jacksonville, FL, Jan 20-25th, 2015 is welcome and we can help you plan for it. We are having a debate in E Board about the best way to reach the membership. We have those who prefer mailed information and those who are computer savvy and want it all emailed. We also have things listed on our Web Site. Do you look there for information? We want to reach all members and would like to cater it to your needs. So you will receive a card in the mail about the Free GPS Seminar with free book to the first 30 member/families that call or email Chet Dunbar, as well as an email notice, listing on Web Site, and the information here in the newsletter. Please respond to me with the best way to reach you. Either leave a message on my home phone 313-343-5602, or email me at rstano@comcast .net about what is best for you. This is also a great way to contact me with changes in name, address or email for the roster. Thank you for your response. The other debate going on is about money. We are fortunate to have weathered some lean time through the recession and are now at a point where our investments are giving us a nice return. How do we best use this resource? Do we decrease yearly dues? Offer classes, seminars for free or at reduced rates? Do we have free parties? Have a free or decrease cost for the Commanders Ball at the GPYC in January? Do we have free refreshments at monthly meetings? Do we spend it on advertising our classes, our group, and or boating safety materials for the public? We need to know what you think. Call our email me your reponse.

We want to encourage all of you to come to

Bay City for the

D-9 Fall Conference and

Halloween Frenzy Bonnie, “ the Queen of Quiver” and Ron Utz , Jan Curl, Micheal Babiarz,

and I will head up Friday afternoon to be there by 3pm to start the transformation of our Hospitality Room.

In true Utz fashion, they have designed a specialty drink of orange juice or red fruit juice with a topper of Black vodka. We will be making jello and

pudding shots to compliment the orange and brown holiday cookies, and Michael is making his TO DIE FOR APPLE CRISP. The hot dish in our room will be Death by Chili.

There are usually 10 to 15 rooms set up by the different Squadrons around the state serving free food and drinks Friday night from 7 to 11pm.

Who ever comes can help set up, take turns serving in our room and visiting the other rooms , and help clean up after. Just give Bonnie a

shout by phone 313-886-3495 or e-mail [email protected] if you are coming, want to help, or want to bring anything.

Costumes are encouraged with Bonnie the vampire, myself as a witch, and Bill as a dirty old man. There will also be the GPPS Witch and

Voltan the Fortune teller to entertain us. Don’t forget the spooky music and horror films on the TV.

It is always a treat to see what the other Squadronshave done with the Theme.

Bonnie, however does enjoy winning a prize for her work. So don’t sit at home, come join the fun.

Come for the evening or stay for the weekend to enjoy the meetings and dinner

with the Planetarium adventure Saturday night.

You will be glad you did! Rose Stano

involved in Cooperative Charting again as a wonderful excuse to get outdoors and have fun! Gougeon Brothers Company and West Systems – We all know that West Systems is one of the most well-respected fiberglass repair systems in the boating industry. But did you know that the materials were developed in Bay City? Joe Parker retired this past spring after nearly 25 years as Technical Product Manager at Gougeon Brothers Inc. He will talk about the development of WEST SYSTEM epoxy business and custom boatbuilding at Gougeon Brothers Inc. as well as the industries currently being served by epoxy products formulated and produced in Bay City. Joe is also the owner and operator of Bay Boat Works. His passion is boats, and sailing in particular. He is knowledgeable in composite manufacturing of all type of structures, and is currently representing Doyle Sail makers and doing sailboat rigging and sailing hardware installation throughout central and northern Michigan. America’s Waterway Watch - America's Waterway Watch is a public outreach program sponsored by the United States Coast Guard and encouraging participants to simply report suspicious activity to the Coast Guard and/or other law enforcement agencies. Unlike some Neighborhood Watch programs, for example, you are not formally joining an organization -- there are no meetings, membership cards or membership requirements -- and you do not become an agent of the Coast Guard or any other law enforcement agency. If you are a recreational boater, the United States Coast Guard wants your help in keeping these areas safe and secure. Learn how you can help with this nation-wide initiative. Boating Apps – Are you smarter than your smartphone? Probably not. And if you equip your smartphone or tablet with apps designed for boating, your devices will do a lot of the hard work for you! Join D/Lt Chet Dunbar as he takes a look at some of the many applications for smartphones and tablets that are specifically designed to make your day on the water safer and more fun. Bruce Jenvey has accepted an invitation to speak at the Fall Conference. Some of you may recall Bruce as the founder and publisher

of Great Lakes Cruiser Magazine. For those of you who read the magazine, you probably remember a column by John Kenneth Bruce that ran each month under the title, "Stupid Boat Tricks." To the delight of the readers, in each issue the column highlighted a boating experience that demonstrated a boater demonstrating the greatest lack of common sense or experience. Great Lakes Cruiser Magazine was published from 1994 to 2004, and it was not until the last issue that the true identity of John Kenneth Bruce was revealed to be none other than the publisher himself, Bruce Jenvey. Bruce compiled his columns into a book, The Complete Stupid Boat Tricks. The book is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Bruce is the author of a number of other books, including Haunts and Heroes of the Great Lakes and Handy Harbor Guide: The Bays and Waterways of the Great Lakes, as well as The Cabbottown Witch Novels and other tales of the paranormal. Pick up a copy of one of his books and bring it to Fall Conference, and Bruce will be glad to autograph it for you!

Officers’ and Squadron Educational Officers’ Seminars – These are challenging times for leadership in all civic organizations, and United States Power Squadrons is no exception. We’ll have special sessions for squadron officers and squadron educational officers to bring you up on the latest from United States Power Squadrons. You’ll also get a chance to talk with fellow officers about the issues that you are confronting as you lead your squadron.

involved in Cooperative Charting again as a wonderful excuse to get outdoors and have fun! About Mariners’ Church

In a rustic old hall in Detroit they prayed, In the Maritime Sailors’ Cathedral. The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

People around the world know about Mariners’ Church of Detroit from those famous lines in Gordon Lightfoot’s ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

But you may be surprised to learn that Mariners’ was unique in many respects long before that song was written. Old Mariners’ was founded by a woman.

Julia Anderson’s Will established Mariners’ in 1842 and specified a stone church (built for the ages) with “forever free” pews. It’s now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Mariners’ is the only church in Michigan honored by this distinction, bestowed by Act 142 of 1848.

Mariners’ is different in that it was founded as, and still is, a non-diocesan, self-perpetuating parish especially for sailors, but not exclusively so. Mariners’ helped former slaves reach freedom in Canada through a tunnel from its basement to the Detroit River waterfront. The 3000-ton church building was moved to its present location on the opposite side of Hart Plaza to make way for the Detroit civic center.

Since 1975, Mariners’ Church has created and maintained new traditions for Great Lakes sailors including annual services for Blessing of the Fleet, Navy League Sunday and the Great Lakes Memorial Service.

People keep coming back to Mariners’ Church because they find it nourishes them spiritually, uplifts them emotionally and gives them strength for another week. Many enjoy the classical worship music and have made lasting friends. More on Mariners’ unique and surprising history can be found in the book Created for the Ages, available from the church office, 170 E. Jefferson, Detroit, MI 48226.

Great Lakes Memorial Service is Sunday, Nov. 9 at 11am, arrive early and gather in the basement. Free Parking is available in the Ford Auditorium Underground Garage. The entrance is in the median strip of Jefferson Ave. at Woodward Ave.
