A big thank you goes out to Doug and Nancy Christy of Lakeland, FL, for the donation to the Association of the photo of the USS Des Moines (shown below). The photo depicts the Des Moines sailing into Port Everglades, Florida (date unknown). Of note is that Doug Christy’s father was a retired Navy Commander whose last tour of duty was as Commander-in-charge of a naval facility in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. This photograph was among his possessions.

Thank you to Roy Lammey, Jr. for donating for raffle at this year’s reunion a framed print of the USS Des Moines at sea (left). The winner of the raffle was Robert and Donna Kuehner.

Thank you to Melvin Murray for donating for raffle at this year’s reunion a handmade stained glass depiction of the USS Des Moines and Daisy Mae (right). The winner of the raffle was Tony and Alma Todaro.

To all the men and women who have fought -- and are fighting -- for our freedom, and their families who have suffered so much, to you we say:

We are pleased to honor Shipmate and Association Member

1958 -1961

Barrett “Barry” Ferguson

Barrett “Barry” Ferguson was born on November 2, 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, and graduated from Bloomfield High School on June, 1957. On August 20, 1957 Barry enlisted in the US Navy, attending Boot Camp in Bainbridge, MD. August 2013

Barry enlisted as a Kiddee Cruiser and planned to be discharged from the Navy on his 21st birthday; however, Barry extended his enlistment in order to go to A/C and Refrigeration School. After boot camp, Barry went to the Great Lakes to attend Machinist Mate School. He then received his orders for a two year duty on the Des Moines which had just left the States for the Mediterranean as Flagship of the Sixth Fleet (the Des Moines’ duty was eventually extended to three years). While in the Mediterranean, Barry went to Norfolk, VA, for three months to attend A/C and Refrigeration School.

The USS Des Moines returned to the States in March, 1961, and was put out of commission. After the USS Des Moines was decommissioned, Barry was discharged from the Navy as an MM2. Nine months later, Barry reenlisted, advanced to MM1, and attended Pre-Com School in Newport, RI. He was then assigned to the USS Leahy, a Destroyer Leader Guided Missile Frigate.

Barry married Joan Herold during his second tour. They settled in New Jersey, and had four children: Michael, David, Deborah, and Paul . Barry and Joan were married for 43 years. In 1976, the family moved to Bunnell, FL, where Barry owned and operated a restaurant and motel. Barry eventually sold the restaurant/motel and started his own major appliance repair business. Joan passed away in January, 2006. Thereafter, Barry met and married his present wife, Faith. Barry and Faith are now retired and happily reside at Bear Creek, Ormond Beach, FL.
