Our MissionThe USTA Tennis & Education Foundation is dedicated to improving the life of children and adults, people with disabilities, and others with special needs, through tennis and education programs that are based on health, fitness, character-building and self improvement... changing lives through tennis and education.

Letter from the President and Executive Director

Dear Friends:

The past two years have been an exciting and gratifying time for the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation (USTA T&EF). When we travel around the country and see for ourselves how many people have benefited from Foundation-supported programs, it’s hard to believe that we began operations less than a decade ago. The Foundation was launched with a simple idea – improving the quality of life for children and adults through tennis and education programs that are based on health, fitness, character-building and self-improvement – and our mission has never changed. What has changed is the growing number of people whose lives we are able to touch as our grants increase and our scholarship programs grow: in 2006 and 2007, we funded 111 non-profit programs and awarded 186 college scholarships and player incentive awards. Now that’s impressive!

We are equally proud of the creativity and commitment of the programs we support, and the role the Foundation plays in helping them develop and maintain quality and innovation. These programs never lose sight of the simple joy tennis can give a youngster, but they also are equally committed to using the lessons of tennis to help these young people achieve academic success. Again and again, we’ve seen these programs demonstrate the winning combination of tennis and education to motivate and teach young people of all ages, and we’ve had the honor of meeting many of the outstanding youngsters who are achieving so much as a result of their participation.

The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation is about changing lives. We support programs that encourage young people to stay in school, be physically fit and set – and meet -- goals for a successful future. They learn the value of working together, absorbing the critical lesson that “there is no ‘I’ in team.” In our roles as U.S. Davis Cup Captain, President of the Foundation and Executive Director of the Foundation, we know, respectfully, how vital commitment and teamwork can be to success, and we are both thrilled to see young people in Foundation-supported programs around the country learning for themselves that amazing things can happen when each person commits to do his or her best and work together.

None of this would be possible without the support of our growing number of donors. Individuals, corporations and foundations have responded with generosity and we thank each and every one of them. We are also fortunate to have the commitment of an extraordinary Board of Trustees. Not all are themselves tennis players, but all understand the powerful combination of education and tennis.

At the heart of what we do is our partnership with the USTA itself, both on the staff and Board level. There’s a powerful synergy between our two organizations: USTA members are among our strongest supporters and more than half of the programs we now fund are National Junior Tennis League programs. We have also been very fortunate to have the ongoing help of many of tennis’ brightest stars, men and women who believe in our mission and do everything they can to help advance our goals.

We hope you will take a few minutes to review this annual report and learn more about the activities and achievements of the past two years. It has been an exciting time, and we look forward to your continuing support in the years to come as we work together to help make dreams come true.

Sincerely,

Patrick McEnroe Karen Martin-EliezerPresident Executive Director

Thai Tennis Organization in America, Fairfax, Virginia:Introducing Tennis to All AmericansTennis is an international sport, and ensuring that young people of diverse ethnic backgrounds here in America have a chance to play is an important Foundation priority. Thai Tennis’s goal is to do just that by encouraging the Thai and Asian community in the U.S. to promote and support tennis for both adults and young people. Through their Build for Life Sunday Children’s Tennis Clinic and Mentoring program, supported by a Foundation grant, Thai Tennis reaches out to more than 350 youngsters from the Thai community, age three to fifteen, in Falls Church, Virginia, Montgomery County, Maryland, Los Angeles and Dallas. Nearly all of these youngsters are first generation Americans with parents who work long hours building lives in their new country. The program’s commitment to providing both a safe place for kids to go and a connection to their Thai heritage and language has made it an important community resource.

“Our Sunday program is giving our kids a link to their heritage as well as skills in a sport that can be part of their lives forever.”- George Duangmanee, Managing Director, Thai Tennis

Break the Barriers, Inc., Fresno, CaliforniaOpening Tennis to People with DisabilitiesFounded by former champion gymnast Deby Hergenrader, whose sister had Down’s Syndrome, and her husband Steve, a former New York Yankee, Break the Barriers is committed to dismantling the wall that too often exists between the able and the disabled. Founded 20 years ago and now recognized internationally as a pioneer in the world of inclusion, Break the Barriers brings together the able and the disabled of all ages in free arts and sports programs. With the help of a USTA T&E Foundation grant, Break the Barriers was able to introduce tennis to nearly 500 children in their highly successful “Buddy Program.”

“Our objective was to celebrate all levels of victories and achievements by bringing able-bodied and disabled children together through the sport of tennis. It was a wonderful experience for everyone: children learned to help one another, and enjoy an awesome sport that builds their self-esteem while they are having fun. It also helped them become stronger and more physically fit. It was a win/win for everyone!” - Deby Hergenrader

Working with theFord Foundation to Build Community

In 2007, the Ford Foundation awarded the USTA, through its National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) in partnership with the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation, a $400,000 grant for a new initiative, “Community Building Through Tennis.” Along with additional funding of $350,000 invested by the USTA T&EF, the chapters themselves and the USTA’s Community Tennis Division, this 18-month pilot project supports NJTL programs designed to bring together people from varied backgrounds in neighborhoods experiencing rapid economic and social change. The four NJTL Chapters selected for the project are Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education, Philadelphia, PA; MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation, Jacksonville, FL; Milwaukee Tennis & Education Foundation, Milwaukee, WI: and Tenacity, Inc., Boston, MA.

Supporting Programsthat Make a Difference

Whether reaching out to at-risk youngsters to provide positive role models and academic assistance, giving people with disabilities the opportunity to build self-esteem and success, or helping community programs utilize tennis as a motivator for school achievement, USTA Tennis & Education Foundation-supported programs around the country are using the powerful combination of tennis and education to help change lives.

Tennis can teach many lessons that go beyond the court. It instills the need for self-discipline, shows the importance of mastering small steps to reach a larger goal, and teaches that everyone makes mistakes but can always overcome those mistakes and come back to win. As the philanthropic entity of the United States Tennis Association, the Foundation’s mission is to fund programs that help young people use these important tennis/life lessons, combined with on-going academic support and mentoring, to grow into healthy, educated and productive members of their communities. Because virtually all the administrative and operational costs of the Foundation are borne by the USTA, Foundation dollars can go directly to support these deserving programs.

Programs are selected for Foundation support twice a year by a Grant Proposal Review Committee which includes Foundation Board members and USTA national staff. USTA Sections provide important input. In 2006 and 2007, the Foundation supported 111 programs in 34 states and the District of Columbia. Designated as “Aces for Kids” programs, each is unique but all share a common vision: using tennis as a springboard to help young people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, stay in school, perform at the highest possible level, and stay physically fit and healthy.

The Foundation supports programs that are just starting up, as well as those that have demonstrated long-term continuity. It serves as an important resource for programs and is able to help develop initiatives designed to meet specific social, health, and educational needs. Alarmed at the skyrocketing diabetes and obesity rates among young people, the USTA’s Diversity Department, working with the Foundation, created “DEUCE” (Disparity Elimination Using Care and Exercise), a special initiative designed to address the health care disparity experienced by so many African-Americans and Latino youth. With the Aetna Foundation a valued partner in this effort, by 2007, 30 programs were part of DEUCE.

In 2006/2007, the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation funded a total of 111 programs, reaching over 45,000 youngsters in 34 states and the District of Columbia.

Hebni KYDS Take Charge, Orlando, FloridaUsing Tennis to Ensure Good Healthand NutritionWith obesity and diabetes reaching epidemic levels among young people, especially in the African-American and Hispanic communities, practicing good nutrition and developing ongoing exercise habits can literally save lives. Hebni Nutrition Consultants in Orlando, Florida has developed a program aimed at young minority women which is doing just that. KYDS (Keeping Your Diet Straight) provides weekly nutrition education and exercise demonstration, plus healthy cooking classes, to nearly 100 minority students who are at risk for Type II diabetes and obesity. Thanks to the Foundation, the program now also offers tennis instruction. Additionally, as a result of receiving a DEUCE (Disparity Elimination Using Care and Exercise) grant, Hebni taught children and their families the immediate and long-term benefits of exercise and healthy nutrition and saw improved school attendance and academic performance of their children.

“Tennis gives our kids a different way to experience exercise. It’s fun, it’s physical and it requires strategy and coordination. They love it and they learn a lot from it.” - Roniece Walker, Hebni Founder

CHAMPS After-School Program, Erie, PennsylvaniaHelping Local Schools Bring Tennisto Inner-City KidsThe School District of the City of Erie, Pennsylvania has operated CHAMPS (Creating Healthy Active Members Planning to Succeed), its after-school program, for seven years, and it has grown to serve more than 800 youngsters, 3rd to 8th grade, in 15 city schools.

Utilizing a combination of homework help, health and fitness, and youth development, CHAMPS was able to add a weekly tennis program in 2006, thanks to a Foundation grant. But the support wasn’t solely financial, it only started there. USTA Middle States Section staff gave a day-long in-service training for program staff and helped them obtain the portable courts, nets, rackets and balls CHAMPS needed. Local college tennis team members donated their time as

coaches, and pros from two local tennis clubs organized the first annual CHAMPS tennis tournament in April. There was even a tennis banquet at the end of the year with racquets and balls for each youngster, donated by members of the club where the tournament was held.

“Our kids often live in neighborhoods where you don’t go out after dark and there are very few after-school activities. Tennis is something they knew nothing about, but it became a very special part of their lives.” - Jeanne Bender, Program Supervisor

First Serve-New Mexico, Sante Fe, NMHelping At-Risk Young People SucceedThe USTA T&E Foundation has been an important partner in First Serve-New Mexico since it was founded five years ago. The program works one-on-one with youngsters who too often have only experienced failure in school, not success. Without intervention, most will become drop-out statistics with little chance of ever finding good jobs. Providing them with two hours a day of after-school tennis instruction and academic tutoring, First Serve-New Mexico’s goal, according to founder Eleanor Brenner, is to “get inside each child’s head and convince them to become somebody important – and help them develop the work ethic to do it.” Tennis becomes more than a sport; it becomes a vehicle to introduce youngsters to another world and opens up a multitude of opportunities to them. The lessons they learn on the court help them in the classroom as well. The program operates September through May, and currently works with 79 students, 5th grade and up, from six Sante Fe schools.

“This is a program that teaches kids that if they want to be somebody, they have to work for it. We have great expectations for our students and we train them to have great expectations for themselves. This program is about results.” - Eleanor P. Brenner, Founder

Growing the Game:The USTA/USTA Tennis & Education Foundation Partnership

The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation is an important resource both for the programs it funds and for USTA Section Foundations. During the past two years, the Foundation has hosted a well-attended work session at the annual USTA Community Tennis Development Workshop that provided the opportunity for grant recipients to share and exchange ideas about best practices and potential funding sources. Throughout the year, the Foundation works closely with USTA Sections, giving presentations at Section annual and semi-annual meetings and making itself available as an ongoing resource. Thanks to a new membership initiative launched in 2006, USTA renewing members can make a voluntary on-line contribution to the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation with a portion going to the USTA Section Foundation in the member’s community. In just two years, this program has generated over $150,000. By working closely together – the Foundation funds programs that integrate education and tennis, and USTA members spread the word about Foundation activities to generate wider support – the USTA/Foundation partnership is helping to guarantee a new generation of tennis enthusiasts.

Navkiran Singh, Bloomingdale, IllinoisUniversity of Chicago2007 Marian Wood Baird Scholarship Award For Navkiran – or “Nav” as nearly everyone calls her – tennis proved to be a way to become a part of a diverse group of young women, eighteen tennis teammates who became her “eighteen sisters.” Nav’s four years on the Glenbard East Girls Tennis Team not only improved her self-confidence, it gave her the courage to experience new things and grow tremendously as both a person and an athlete. Now in her sophomore year at the University of Chicago, Nav, whose parents emigrated from India, has applied her zest for knowledge to psychology, a field she hopes to pursue as a career. Nav still enthusiastically plays tennis as part of an intramural team and finds time to tutor elementary school students. Though she never had the opportunity to meet Marian Wood Baird, who died in 2007, Nav is very proud to have won the scholarship that was established in honor of this outstanding woman.

Silvio Chiba, Irvine CaliforniaUniversity of California, Santa Cruz2007 Dwight Mosley Scholarship Award

Before surgery for scoliosis at 14, Silvio was ranked in the top 125 in the country in the boys 14 and under division. Though diagnosed when he was very young, the condition hadn’t hampered his activities until doctors decided to operate, fearful that without correction his curving spine would do potentially-fatal damage to his internal organs. A year of recuperation followed, and, slowly, Silvio began to work his way back into life – and tennis. Despite another setback when one of the steel rods in his back broke, Silvio is now playing on the UC-Santa Cruz tennis team. An environmental science major who hopes to someday go on to law school, Silvio has learned the importance of working hard to reach his goals and never, ever giving up his dreams.

Joshua Archibald-Seiffer, Boise, IdahoStanford University2006 Dwight Davis Scholarship Award

Though music is his admitted first love – this talented young composer has a Grammy- winning song to his credit -- tennis has also played a very important role in making Josh the person he is today. Josh began taking lessons and competing when he was 10, and by the time he was a teenager, he had a USTA Intermountain ranking in the top 50. Despite being diagnosed with a chronic arthritic condition, he managed to continue to play on his varsity team throughout high school. Now at Stanford, with a hectic schedule that combines classes in music and the sciences, his other major interest, Josh still manages to find time on the court.

Carlissa and Laken King, Queens, New YorkAmherst College2007 MassMutual Scholarship Awards

Tennis has been a central part of Carlissa and Laken King’s life for as long as they can remember. For both girls, it’s been far more than a sport: it’s been a way of life that taught them invaluable lessons about competition, preparation, struggle, defeat and perseverance. After outstanding high school careers, the twins are now Freshmen at Amherst College. Both are playing on the Amherst women’s tennis team. When they were in high school, the twins volunteered in a local elementary school and saw firsthand the impact they could have helping others. Their dream is to one day establish a charter school where underprivileged, minority youngsters can excel in every aspect, including sports, and go on to top colleges and universities, just as they have.

Providing Scholarships to Outstanding Young People

USTA Tennis & Education Foundation College Scholarships help deserving young men and women, all of whom have combined a love of tennis with academic excellence, to obtain the higher education they need to build a successful future.

Academic excellence, outstanding community service, participation in a USTA or other organized tennis program, and financial need are the common elements that link the college-bound high school seniors – 81 in 2006 and 85 in 2007— who received Foundation scholarships ranging from $500 to $15,000.

USTA Tennis & Education Foundation scholarships honor some of tennis’s greatest role models, including Dwight Mosley, the first African-American member of the USTA board, Dwight Davis, founder of the Davis Cup, community tennis pioneer Eve Kraft, and long-time USTA volunteer Marian Baird. Their legacy lives on through the young men and women who have become Foundation College Scholarship winners.

Each year, the Foundation Scholarship Committee receives applications from high school students across the country. All applications are first carefully reviewed by USTA staff in the student’s Section who rank them and provide additional input when necessary. The Foundation also honors 6th to 11th graders with Player Incentive Awards to encourage outstanding academic achievement and tennis participation.

Scholarship support, which funds both tuition and textbooks, comes from individual donors, foundations and corporations like MassMutual. Over the past three years, the MassMutual Foundation provided more than 100 college scholarships worth $525,000, annually awarded to two students in each of the 17 USTA Sections, plus one discretionary scholarship.

In 2006/2007, the USTA Tennis &Education Foundation awarded college scholarships and player incentive awards worth $852,000 to 186 young people.

”Everything I’ve learned about Mrs. Baird makes me admire this amazing woman who did so much for other people. Even now, after her death, her legacy of doing good continues on. Without the Marian Wood Baird Scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to attend the University of Chicago. I am determined to take this opportunity and someday help others, just as she did.”

“I have always loved the one-on-one competition that tennis has offered me, along with the strategic challenges of figuring out how to beat my opponent. I have also made some really great friends through tennis. I can’t imagine my life without it.”

“Tennis has always kept me focused and showed me how putting all my energy into something could pay off. I’ve always wanted to play competitively at the college level and now it’s happened. My back will always be a problem, but I’m going to take it one day at a time and hopefully good things will happen.”

“The impact that tennis has made on our lives does not end here. Playing tennis is a lifelong journey, and we want to share this wonderful sport with others.”

Having Fun Doing Good

The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation sponsors a variety of events during the year to raise funds that support outstanding not-for-profit programs around the country and scholarships for deserving students.

At the Open The US Open is one of the most important events of the year for tennis fans all over the world, and it is an ideal opportunity for Foundation friends – both players and fans alike – to come together to support our shared mission. Our OPENing Night Gala continues to be “the place to be.” In 2006, the Gala, “An Evening of Legends,” saluted Billie Jean King and Donald Trump, and guests included Tony Bennett, John McEnroe, Pam Shriver, Marina Navratilova, Zina Garrison and Mary Joe Fernandez. In 2007, Martha Stewart was the special guest at the annual OPENing Night Gala. Final Friday at the Open brings out a host of ‘pros’ and ‘ams’ who hit the courts on behalf of the Foundation. The 2006 ProAm was presented by Harmon International and the 2007 ProAm by Tom Golisano. At a special Afternoon and Evening at the Open, Foundation supporters enjoy great tennis from a donated luxury suite and have the opportunity to say “hello” to tennis greats who stop by to show their support.

Launching A New TraditionLast year was the start of a new Foundation tradition – our annual theatre benefit. More than 200 people attended a Broadway performance of “Deuce,” Terrence McNally’s new play about a doubles team. In the audience was the most legendary doubles team of all, Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver. A special part of the evening was a post-performance “talk back” with the show’s two stars, Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes.

Reaching Out to the Next GenerationGenerating support among young professionals is an important Foundation priority, and 2006 saw the launch of a Young Patrons Group in New York City. Aimed at people under age 40, the group was formed to educate individuals about the work of the Foundation and encourage them to direct their time, efforts and funds to support our mission.

Getting the Word OutThe Foundation is fortunate to have friends throughout the United States, who not only support our mission themselves, but also help involve others. Events like the dinner hosted by board member Barbara Wynne at a 2007 Fed Cup tie in Delray Beach, Florida, attended by old and new Foundation friends, are a wonderful way to reach out to new supporters.

A reception in La Jolla, California after the first round matches of the 2006 Davis Cup, given by Foundation Board members Richard Phelps and Tiina Bougas Smith, was another memorable “friend-raising” event.

Sports at Sotheby’sMore than 150 guests demonstrated their “sports IQ” by competing in the All-Sports Trivia Challenge hosted by the Foundation at Sotheby’s in New York. Thanks to Sotheby VP Lee Dunbar, who put together the trivia game, and a host of sports figures that included tennis greats Jim Courier, Virginia Wade and John and Patrick McEnroe, former Knicks star John Starks, and former New York Giant Howard Cross, guests had a wonderful evening of cocktails and competition while raising funds for the Foundation. The winning table’s prize was the chance to view the US Open from the President’s Box.

Kathleen and Everett Checket:“Paving the Way” for Future GenerationsNow well into their 80s, Kathleen and Everett Checket are dedicated tennis fans – and players. Kathleen, a former ballet dancer, jokes that she’d play every day if she had time, but has to limit herself to four times a week. The couple, who have lived all over the world, now call Hillsboro Beach near Boca Raton, Florida, home. Members of the USTA since the early 1960s, they feel supporting tennis is a priority. For twenty-one years, they have sponsored the Checket Cup in Fort Lauderdale, and in 2005 Kathleen Checket received the USTA Senior Service Award. For the Checkets, buying a paver on the Avenue of Aces at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, was the perfect way to demonstrate their commitment to the sport they both love. All proceeds from the paver project, launched in 2005, support the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation. To date, more than 261 pavers have been purchased from supporters from all over the United States, raising over $1,145,000.

“We love tennis and this was a great way to give back to a sport that has provided both of us with so much pleasure. Seeing our names on a paver outside Arthur Ashe Stadium was a truly wonderful experience.”

James Blake:Supporting the Foundation’s Mission The “J-Block,” in their familiar light blue tee-shirts has become a well-known presence at tournaments around the country, but few people know that the proceeds from sales of all J-Block merchandise, developed by James Blake and Nike, goes to benefit the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation with special emphasis on programs in New Haven and Harlem. Over the past two years, J-Block merchandise, sold at tournaments as well as in tennis shops and on the web, has generated more than $67,000 and sales are still going strong. Blake, a member of the USTA T&E Foundation’s Professional Player Advisory Council, is thrilled with how well the project has gone.

“It’s exciting to see people wearing J-Block tee-shirts cheering, but it’s even better when it translates into support for Foundation programs.”

Anne Lloyd Sternlieb:Donating Art to Make a DifferenceWhen the poster was first published in 1980, it was called “The Sneaker” and completely sold out its 3,000 copies within weeks. To its creator, Anne Lloyd Sternlieb, it was always simply “Dennis’s Shoe,” named after her neighbor’s son’s sneaker. We like to call it “End of Summer,” and thanks to the artist’s generosity, the poster is now owned by the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation which will use it as a donor thank-you card. Mrs. Sternlieb, a long-time New Yorker, retired to La Jolla, California nine years ago after a long career as a designer and artist. She decided to make the donation after researching the Foundation on the web.

“I liked that they supported programs which helped young people. I’m not a tennis player myself, but this piece always reminds people of tennis and I think it’s really appropriate that it will benefit the sport and the good it does.”

American Express:Making Every Ace CountThanks to American Express, every ace served during 2006 in a stadium-court match at the US Open Series and the US Open itself meant more than a potential game-winning point. Aces directly translated into dollars -- $50 each at Open Series tournaments and $100 each at the US Open -- for Foundation-supported programs. In total, more than $189,000 was donated by American Express as part of the Aces for Kids initiative, explained American Express’ Rich Lehrfeld.

“Summer of Aces helped inspire players across the US Open and US Open Series to be on top of their game for a higher cause. It was a program where everyone was a winner.”

The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation wishes to thank the many individual, foundation, and corporate donors who make our work possible. Through their generosity, the Foundation raised more than $3,407,000 during 2006 and 2007.
