WHAT IS USA JUDO?

THE JUDO MORAL CODE The Judo Moral Code is a set of ethics created by the sport’s founder Jigoro Kano. He believed they were vital in the development of judo players and individuals both on and off the mat. These ideals still hold true today as clubs and their judoka practice these traditions. VALUES Courtesy Honor Friendship Respect Courage Modesty Honesty Self-Control USA Judo is the National Governing Body for the sport of judo in the United States and is the representative to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). USA Judo is a membership-based and high-performance organization that coordinates and sanctions events, clubs, and tournaments while also working to create interest and participation for the sport. USA Judo has more than 10,400 members that include athletes, club owners, referees, and coaches of all ages. USA Judo currently offers five different membership categories that encompass Judo, Jujitsu, or both. To register or renew a membership visit: https://bit.ly/3dMxrRO USA Judo is responsible for the selection and training of teams to represent the USA in international events and Olympic/Paralympic competitions. An equal part of USA Judo’s mission is focused on the creation and development of the sport of judo in America. Registered clubs and members are encouraged to both host and attend tournaments across the nation to raise community awareness of the sport as well as participate in USA Judo sport development programs such as Try Judo for Free and Judo in Schools. Try Judo for Free is a program that occurs two times a year that asks clubs around the nation to open up to the local community to practice judo for free to try and bring in new members to each club. HOW DECISIONS ARE MADE IN USA JUDO USA Judo is a nonprofit organization composed of dedicated volunteers that compromise its membership and positions of leadership, including the National Board of Directors. All policy decisions are made through several volunteer-led committees reporting to an elected Board of Directors. The Board of Directors meets a minimum of four times each year and determines the policy, strategy, and direction of USA Judo.

COACHING CERTIFICATION AND EDUCATION PROGRAM

OVERVIEW

During the process of becoming certified, you will gain knowledge and experience which will be valuable to you and to your athletes. USA Judo Coach Certifications signify competence and credibility and identify you as a professional instructor. You are a part of a distinguished group of coaches certified by USA Judo. Classes and seminars are available throughout each year.

We have taken steps to make maintaining your certification easier; you are no longer required to attend a clinic each year to keep your certification active. As a Professional Coach, you have a responsibility to continuously improve your knowledge and experience through annual continuing education as is the standard in other professions. We encourage you to challenge yourself to excel to higher levels of certification.

The leadership of USA Judo has taken steps to move this organization into a more professional mode in line with the directive of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. While change is often difficult, the Coaches Certification and Education Program has accepted the challenge given to us by our leaders and by the USOPC and we will move this program forward into a more professional position.

There are currently seven (7) certifications that USA Judo offers within this program. Each certification has prerequisites consisting of age and rank requirement. The levels are to be earned in sequential order with exception to highly qualified individuals, i.e. Olympians and World Champions. Remember that an individual must always be fully certified by USA Judo to keep their coaching certification and privileges. Each USA Judo coach must have an up to date SafeSport certification, CDC Heads Up certification, background screen, current individual USA Judo membership and a minimum rank of Shodan through USA Judo. The only exception to this the Developmental coach level in which a senior ikkyu brown belt is acceptable.

COACHING LEVELS

1. Developmental: This if for coaches under the age of 18 and hold a minimum of brown belt rank.

Developmental coaches will receive a 4-year certificate but are not listed as a coach and may not coach mat-side at USA Judo sanctioned events.

2. State: This is for coaches over the age of 18 and hold a minimum of Shodan

3. Regional: Coaches must be at least 18 years old with a minimum judo rank of Shodan

4. National: Coaches must be at least 18 years old with a minimum judo rank of Nidan

5. Continental: Coaches must be at least 18 years old with a minimum judo rank of Sandan

6. International: Coaches must be at least 18 years old with a minimum judo rank of Sandan

7. International Gold: Honoring notable coaches such as Olympic and World Team coaches.

FUNDRAISING GUIDE

Successful fundraising requires preparation and good planning which can help your club immensely. The following guideline is meant to serve as a basis of how fundraising can be done.

Please note:

• Fundraising is subject to public control which may require filing for a license or the collection of a sales tax, please check your local laws beforehand.

• Identify a specific purpose for each fundraising activity and how much is needed.

Fundraising ideas:

• GRANTS

o Seek grants for specific needs from corporations, municipalities and/or foundations.

• SANCTIONED EVENTS o Sanction an event through USA Judo and invite judoka from your area to

participate. Not only does this increase revenue but it can also be a great experience for your athletes.

• SELL SHAKLEE PRODUCTS o Shaklee is offering club sponsorships through USA Judo where clubs will receive up to

53% commission on purchases made by your club members and other customers, offering a way to provide trusted, safe, and proven sports nutrition in your club, as well as a turnkey fundraising tool to support your club. that are organized and administrated by our member clubs and coaches.

TEAM AWARDS

Team points and awards will be implemented for each of USA Judo’s national events. Teams are decided on how many competitors are registered under a sanctioned club. All categories (including uncontested and novice) will receive the same points based on the event. Points will be tallied based on the below information and awards will be given to the top clubs:

• Youth Nationals, Junior Olympics and Junior categories at President’s Cup o 1st: 5 points o 2nd: 3 points o 3rd: 1 point

• Senior Nationals and Senior/Veterans/VI categories at President’s Cup o 1st: 7.5 points o 2nd: 4.5 points o 3rd: 1.5 points

In order to ensure the safety of its athlete community, USA Judo has adopted the USOPC’s SafeSport Training course and has made this training mandatory for all certified coaches, referees, board members, individuals with frequent contact with minor members, medical staff, national event weight verification personnel and national office staff. Along with this, these same individuals must submit to a background screen conducted by NCSI every two (2) years. USA Judo and SafeSport have the authority to conduct random audits of clubs and events to ensure everyone involved is properly certified. To access the course and view more information on SafeSport and the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP) please visit this site: go.teamusa.org/3azIPyx. Please note that the SafeSport certifications are now valid for one (1) year and must be renewed annually.

TRAINING This SafeSport online training program teaches you about the nature of misconduct in sport and how to recognize it, prevent it, and take action. The information in this course will keep sport a positive experience for every athlete, coach, and parent. Any individual that also has “regular contact with a minor” is required to take the SafeSport course and renew each year. USA Judo defines “regular contact with minors” as:

Meaningful or direct contact or oversight with minors that would be considered frequent, repeated, or consistent. By way of example, an adult who will often assist with coaching/leading classes including minors would be considered “regular contact” with minors and is required to complete the SafeSport Online Training/Certification Course. An adult who may “drop in” to coach and/or practice with minors on occasion would not be considered frequent, repeated, or consistent and would not need to complete the SafeSport Online Training/Certification Course. In the spirt of the moral code of judo, USA Judo requires adult members to self-certify whether or not they considered having “regular contact” with minors based on the aforementioned description. If an adult member is unsure whether or not they have “regular contact” with minors, USA Judo encourages those individuals (and their clubs) to err on the side of caution and complete the SafeSport Training and Certification.

PARENTS Developed for parents of athletes, this course addresses important topics around recognizing, preventing, and acting against misconduct in sports while also giving tips on how to better discuss this with children. This course helps parents become active participants in creating safe, positive sports environments for their child. More information regarding parental advice can be found here: bit.ly/39BQL0E
