Francis Lee Bailey, Jr. is a former criminal defense attorney. For most of his career he was licensed in Florida and in Massachusetts, where he was disbarred in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Among several high-profile matters, he served as the lawyer in the re-trial of physician Sam Sheppard; was counsel to Albert DeSalvo, known as “The Boston Strangler”; was the supervisory attorney in the court martial of Captain Ernest Medina for the My Lai Massacre; and was one of the lawyers for the defense in the O. J. Simpson murder trial. From 1952 to 1956, Mr. Bailey also served in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Bailey has had meaningful success in the courtroom as well as a number of visible defeats, and even legal controversies and personal troubles with the law. In 2014, he was denied a law license by the Maine Board of Bar Examiners and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. As of 2016, Mr. Bailey resides in Maine with his partner, and runs their consulting business, Bailey & Elliott. Mr. Bailey has been part of some of the most well-known criminal legal matters in American jurisprudence over the 20th century and gladly shares that legal history with his colleagues.

Plenary RemarksYouth Justice and Fair Sentencing – A Discussion of ReformEric Alexander – Youth Justice Advocate, Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth

President-Elect Speeches

8:30 am

8:45 am – 9:45 am

Eric Alexander – At 17 years of age Eric was arrested and subsequently charged with especially aggravated robbery and first-degree murder. Aware that the court was seeking a sentence of life without the possibility of parole, he pled guilty in order to receive two 25-year sentences (with a chance for parole) to be served concurrently in the Tennessee Department of Corrections. While in prison Eric earned his G.E.D. and he denounced his gang membership and led members of other gangs to step away from gang life, get their G.E.D.’s, and attend trade classes. He went on to spend 6 years studying Comparative Religion and Developmental Psychology while becoming a State of Tennessee Board-approved Licensed Barber. Eric was paroled in 2004 after 10 years.

After his release he began to volunteer in Alternative Schools for students with behavioral issues. He joined AmeriCorps Community Health corps and assisted in establishing full service medical clinics inside of local high schools that provided health care to poor and underserved students and families. Eric now serves as the Youth Justice Advocate with the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY). In his role he speaks to groups throughout the country in support of CFSY’s public education and advocacy efforts. Eric is a founding member of ICAN or the Incarcerated Children’s Advocacy Network. He also works with formerly incarcerated youth to help engage them deeply and strategically in the movement for the fair sentencing and treatment of all children.
