I INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY

t

This report covers an overburden drilling pro

gram conducted by Utah Mines Ltd, on a property (312 contiguous

mining claims) located in Moody, Galna, Knox and Kerrs Townships

in the Larder Lake Mining Division of Ontario. Tbe program com

menced on February 2, 1984, and contiunted until February 19,1984.

Seven rotary reverse-circulation overburden drill holes were com

pleted on the property during that period by Heath and Sherwood

Drilling of Kirkland Lake, Ontario.

The holes were drilled with a Nodwell mounted Acker

MP-10 drill, supported by a small International tractor used pri

marily for hauling water from nearby streams. Utah's Project

Geologist, Mr. Johial Newsome and assistant Mr. Andrew Kuzma

completed lithological logging of the holes and sampling of all

till, gravel and coarse sand units.

The seven hole program was designed in part to

verify and delineate strong gold anomalies encountered in heavy

mineral concentrates from till horizons intersected in previous

drilling, as well as test new previously unworked areas of the

property. The program was partially successful, and resulted in 615' of diamond drilling that has already been filed for assess

ment credit.

Included in this report are drill logs of the seven

holes, with detailed lithologies descriptions, and cross-sections

displaying the hole locations and correlations of the encountered

Quaternary stratigraphy. A plan map outlining the hole locations

in relation to the claim boundaries, roads, lakes, etc, is also

included.

Page 2.

Total program costs were $26,962.05, translating*

to 1797 man-days of assessment credit, and the appropriate attest

ations appear in the appendix of this report.

II AREA AND ACCESS

The Utah property surrounds Jim's Lake {also known

locally as Flipper Lake), which is located approximately 17 miles

northeast of the town of Iroquois Falls. The property currently

consists of 312 contiguous mining claims in southern Moody and

Galna Townships and northern Knox and Kerrs Townships. Work here in discussed applies to 57 of these claims, with the actual dril

ling having been performed on 6 mining claims in Moody Township.

Figure l illustrates the location of the property, and Figure 2.

the location of the drilling on the property.

Access to the property is excellent, with an all

weather gravel lumber road extending 20 miles south from Abitibi

Camp 29 to the shore of Trail Lake. Abitibi Camp 29 is approx., 40 miles from Iroquois Falls via the Abitibi Pulp and Paper Ltd.

North Industrial and Translimit roads. Numerous winter bush roads

branch off this gravel access road, providing good access to

much of the property.

Relief on the property is minimal. No outcrop

occurs on the property, and local maximum relief of 30 to 50'

occurs along the flanks of a major northwest-southeast trending

esker which runs through the centre of the property. This esker

is a northern arm of the ma]or Munro Esker System, which runs

from the south shore of Lake Abitibi south to Kirkland Lake.

This esker system hosts abundant lakes along its*

core section, the largest of which is Trail Lake and the second

largest Jim's Lake, central to the property. Numerous kettle

depressions and smaller kettle lakes occur in the esker throughout

the property. The surrounding area is occupied by mostly low

swamp or semi-swamp areas. Drainage over most of the property

is south towards the Abitibi River or east towards Lake Abitibi.

Vegetation is typically a mixture of black spruce,

jackpine, poplar and birch, with a thick undergrowth of alder.

In the more swampy areas, black spruce is predominant, and along

the esker, birch, poplar and jackpine are more common. Much of

the northern portion of the property has been cut over by Abitibi

Pulp and Paper, and is some places replanting with jackpine and

black spruce.

Ill EXPLORATION HISTORY

The property has seen some limited exploration

work over the past twenty-odd years.

In Moody and Galna Townships, North American Rare

Metals carried out the first reported exploration work in 1962,

in the form of an airborne magnetometer survey. This work was

followed by ground magnetic and vertical and horizontal loop

electromagnetic surveys, which delineated several formational

type conductors and strong magnetic highs.

Page 6

During the same year (1962), Mistango River Mines

Limited, performed ground magnetic surveys in several areas of

the Moody and Galna Townships, and commenced a 34 hole diamond

drilling program which ran from 1962 to 1965. Most of their

targets were strong magnetic highs indicative of ultramafic

lithologies, as they were searching primarily for asbestos.

They also however, drilled several electromagnetic conductors

as delineated by a turam survey they completed in 1964. The

majority of these proved to be barren chert-sulphide iron for

mations .

Kenneco Exploration (Canada)Ltd., completed an

airborne survey of northeastern Kerrs and southern Galna Town

ships in 1965, delineating several weak conductors they chose

not to test.

In 1969, Amax drilled one diamond drill hole in

northern Kerrs Township, intersecting predominantly felsic

volcanics. Noranda also drilled two holes in this area in

1965.

In 1975, Texasgulf drilled four holes in Moody

Township, two on the ice at Trail Lake and two west of our

property just east of Marathon Creek. All holes intersected

metasediments with formational type graphitic conductors.

Cominco was active in the region in 1977, complet

ing ground magnetic and electromagnetic and limited gravity

surveys over grids in Moody Township. Two diamond drill holes

were reported, in the vicinity of the termination of the Abitib

logging road.

Page 7.

Today, the area is seeing renewed exploration

activity, with much of the ground in Marathon, Moody, Galna Knox, Kerrs Purvis, and Bowyer Townships being held by Esso,

Noranda, Dome and ourselves. The property was selected for

reconnaissance overburden drilling programs in 1980 because

of its favourable interpreted geology and lack of any real de

tailed gold exploration effort, and work since that time has

continued to intrigue with strong gold anomalies in glacial

sediments and encouraging bedrock geology.

IV PREPARATION OF DRILL SITES

Camp was established on the south shore of Trail Lake at the termination of the gravel access road running south

from Camp 29. This road had been cleared by Esso Minerals

Canada Ltd., prior to our arrival. Access to all drill holes

was via pre-existing Abitibi Pulp and Paper Ltd., lumber roads,

which required snow clearance employing a D-7 Caterpillar

Dozer. This work was performed by John Wlad and Sons Construction Ltd., of Iroquois Falls, Ontario, during the period February 2,3,

4, 5 and 8, and require a total of 37 hours of dozer time. The operator of the dozer was Mr. Tom Jeffery also of Iroquois Falls, Ontario.

V OVERBURDEN DRILLING SYSTEM AND PROCEDURE

The drilling system was an Acker MP-100 drill,

mounted on a Flextrack Nodwell FM 240. Mounted with the drillw as a Lister BK Pneumatic Compressor. Water was provided for the

Page 8.

system via hauling, using skid mounted tanks pulled by a small*

International 600 tractor.

The Acker drill has a hydraulic drive system whichturns ten foot dual tube reverse circulation drill rods. The bits used were Smith-Greuner tricone skirted bits of 2 15/16" diameter The bit is coupled to the lowest ten foot rod by an adaptor. The circulation fluid is a mixture of air and water which are varied dependant on encountered lithologies. The water-air mixture is ejected between the tricones of the bit, and the sample is cir

culated up the core of the dual tube rods and reaches the sur

face, passing through a cyclone collector in the drill shack.

The geologist and assistant log and sample the overburden as it is ejected from the cyclone collector. The +10 ( 1.7mm) size fraction of the sample is ejected or retained as a reference sample, The clay to gravel size fraction was collected in three gallon buckets, from which samples were taken. Normally, depending on the encountered stratigraphy, five foot samples were taken con tiguously through the till horizons, and ten foot samples through the gravel and coarse sand horizons.

The holes were drilled to bedrock, and an average of five foot of bedrock was drilled and sampled. Figure 3 is

a schematic of the reverse-circulation/overburden drilling system.

When the holes are completed, the circulation re cycling tank is cleaned out and the Nodwell moves on to the next

hole location.

VI OVERBURDEN LOGGING TECHNIQUES AND LITHOLOGIES*

The sample exists the cyclone collector as a slurry.

It is logged as it passes through a hand held Canadian Standard # 10

seive, with a mesh size of 1.7 mm. The material coarser than 1.7 mm

is either discarded or retained as a reference sample after visual

logging. The finer material ( 1.7 mm) passes through the # 10

seive and is collected in a 3 gallon sample bucket. Most of this

material is silt-sand size, as the clay fraction is often de

canted over the edge of the bucket into the recycling tank below.

The sample bucket and screening assembly are seated on top of a

100 gallon recycling tank.

The geologist logging the sample recognizes the

different lithologies by noting the particle sizes, shapes, and

compositions. Particle sizes range from clay to cobble size.

Shapes of clasts can be angular to very well rounded, and

lithologies include Archean metavolcanics, metasediments, and

intrusives, and Paleozoic sediments. Below is a brief summary

of the distinguishing characteristics used to differentiate glacial

lithologies.

TILL

Till may be defined as any sediment transported and

deposited by the direct influence of glacier ice. This definition

encompasses englacially and basally derived material, however, the

former may grade into gravel, depending on glacio-fluvial pro

cesses active during deposition. The degree of working and sorting

Page 12

by meltwater generates a wide spectrum of deposits from good 'lodgement' till to well sorted and stratified outwash gravel, and the exact type of deposit is often in question when logging overburden sections using the reverse-circulation method. Re- incorporation of pre-existing sediments by an advancing glacier also tends to complicate a genetic classification for these deposits. For example, the glacier may override proglacial gravels, re-incorporating them into its basal section, and redeposit them as till. Subsequently, the observed deposit displays characteristics of both gravel and till. Therefore, bearing in mind that many 'gray areas' still exist, the following criteria can be used to classify sediments as till:

i) complete range in particle size from clay to boulders, with clay content generally greater than 5 s! by volume. The clay is often observed as hard gritty clay balls in the + 10 fraction of the sample.

ii) inhomogeneous maxture of particle sizes, however, crude stratification may be developed in englacially derived till or till deposited by processes other than basal lodgement, for example, in basal melt-out till.

lii) size and shape of pebbles. Pebbles small enough to escape the grinding and shattering action of the bit are often wedge or bullet shaped, sub-rounded and more angular than those found in gravels. They often display a characteristic commonly re- fered to as 'armoured 1 clasts where clay is preserved in small pits or indentations on the pebble surface. The clay is forcibly smeared into these small cavities by the high pressures exerted in the debris-laiden basal portion of the glacier.

Page 13.

iv) percentage of exotic vs. locally derived clasts: bedrock

in the vicinity of the property consists of a roughly east-

west trending belt of Archean metasediments and metavolcanics,

with minor intrusive ultramafics and felsic volcanics. The

belt is bounded to the north by granites and granite gneisses.

Tills are generally comprised of locally derived meterials, hence

deposits with 50?; or greater locally derived clasts were gen

erally logged as till. However, incorporation of gravels and

re-working of till often dilutes the content of locally derived

clasts. Therefore, this criteria must be applied in conjunction

with other parameters for classifying deposits as till.

v) percentage of matrix, generally, sediments with a matrix

of 3(H or greater clay to fine sand size content were classified

as till. Coarser sand content is often depleted in deposits

logged as till, possibly due to its inherant sporadic occurrance

or terminal mode of comminution of particle grinding. In

gravels, the coarse sand fraction is relatively abundant as the

finer material is often winnowed away by fluvial action.

vi) amounts of sample return; generally, less sample return

of the + 10 fraction is observed in till relative to that of gravel

due to the greater content of fine matrix material which passes

through the +10 mesh seive into the sampling bucket below. In

gravel, + 10 sample return may be very abundant for a combination

of reasons. The lack of the more cohesive finer matrix, combined

with drill down pressure, drill rod vibration and increased hydro

static pressure from the circulation drill water in the sediments

may cause collapse of the gravel above and around the drill bit.

The release of lithostatic pressure through the inner tube of the

d rill rod allows the collapsed gravel to flow up the rods producing

more +10 sample than is actually being penetrated by the drill.

Page 14.

This is greatly in evidence when the gravel contains abundant coarse sand.

2) GRAVEL

The following criteria are used to distinguish gravel deposits from till.

i) Distinctive cycles of sorting and stratification of particle sizes from sand to large cobbles and boulders.

ii) Absence or restricted amounts of finer clay to fine

sand content.

iii) Rounded to well rounded pebbles generally dis playing a low degree of angularity.

iv) Greater abundance ( 5C^) of exotic clasts, i.e. granites, gneisses, Paleozoic carbonates.

v) Greater abundance of coarse sand

vi) More abundant return of +10 sample.

3) CLAY, SILT AND FINE SAND

These sediments are readily recognizable due totheir total or near total lack of coarser material. Interbedded clay, silt and fine sand represents glacio-lustrine varved sedi ments deposited in proglacial lakes or possibly and to a much lesser extent, interlobate ponds. Thick sequences of fine sand are also encountered on the flanks and over eskers and are attributed to the esker development. These deposits are not sampled as transport directions and distances are unknown for

Page 15.

their depositional environments.

4) BEDROCK

Bedrock is easily recognizable as abundant rockchips of like composition. Bedrock is penetrated for at least 5 feet whenever possible to confirm that the medium being drilled is indeed bedrock and not a large boulder.

Recognizing these lithologies is not always simple, since the sample is highly disturbed as it passes up the drill stem core, using the above discussed characteristics, however, most lithologies can be identified with a high degree of cer titude .

VII CROSS SECTION AND HOLE DESCRIPTIONS

Appendix 2 contains detailed drill logs for the seven overburden holes. Appendix 3 contains detailed cross- sections outlining the results of this drilling, with correla tions of the encountered glacial stratigraphy.

Page 16.

SECTION I

Section I correlates Holes JL-84-01,02,03, as well as Hole JL-82-23 which had been previously drilled. The section is drawn such that true distances between holes is shown, as opposed to off-setting the holes, and thus represents an idealized section in crudely a south to north direction. All holes, as can be seen, intersected esker sands and gravels.

Hole JL-84-01, did not reach bedrock, as the drill was unable to penetrate the thick sequence of very fine sand beneath the glaciolacustrine clay cap.

Hole JL-84-02, intersected glaciolacustrineclay, underlain by a thick sequence of esker sands and gravels. Bedrock was a dark green mafic volcanic. Samples were taken throughout the coarse gravel units, which returned no signifi cant base or precious metal values.

Hole JL-84-03, intersected, again, glaciolacustrine clays underlain by a thick sequence of very fine sands. A thin washed till horizon was intersected overlying bedrock, the bedrock being a chloritized mafic volcanic. Again, no significant base or precious metal anomalies were encountered.

Page 17.

SECTION 2————————————————— 9

Section 2, illustrates the correlated glacial stratigraphy encountered in Holes JL-84-08.09,10, and 11.

Again, most holes intersected a thick glacio lacustrine clay cap underlain by interbedded glaciofluvial sands and gravels, probably outwashed material or material coming off the flanks of the major esker located just east of this area. One thin till horizon was encountered in Hole JL-84-11, probably a basal melt out facies till unit. No significant base or precious metal anomalies were encountered in these holes. Bedrocks were intermediate to mafic meta- volcanics.
