Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Police Sergeant reports to the Police Captain. This classification supervises subordinate police and/or security personnel.

Essential Functions

1. Performs the typical functions listed in the Police Officer job description.

2. Supervises the activities of subordinate police and/or security personnel.

3. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates the operation and goals of police assignments.

4. Carries out staff management activities by evaluating employee performance, initiating disciplinary action, and making commendation recommendations.

5. Exercises direct command in a manner that assures order, appropriate conduct, discipline, and efficiency.

6. Ensures compliance with departmental standards.

7. Schedules and organizes the work of subordinate personnel.

8. Disseminates criminal and administrative information to subordinate personnel at shift briefings.

9. Reviews and analyzes reports prepared and submitted by officers for accuracy, completeness, and essential elements.

10. Maintains positive community relations and department image.

11. Investigates and resolves complaints, both internal and external.

12. Identifies training needs, and conducts training for department personnel.

13. Performs criminal investigations.

14. Performs duties as Incident Commander.

15. May assist with media releases.

16. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

1. Skilled in the operation of police equipment such as radar and breath alcohol analyzers.

1. Ability to provide legal depositions and testimony.

1. Skilled in utilizing building security and lock systems and procedures

1. Ability to train and supervise employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Utah POST certification, certification as a Category 1 Peace Officer, and four years police experience working as a Category 1 fully sworn police officer.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires moderate physical activity, including the handling of average weight objects up to 25 pounds and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day. Employees may be exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
