UTC Overseas’ Cement Plant Center experts are managing the complex logistics of transporting nearly one thousand pieces for two state-of-the-art cement plants, from factories in China, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Canada and the U.S., to construction sites in Canada and the United States. “We’re moving nearly 100,000 freight tons of parts, equipment, and a myriad of oddly shaped and often over-dimensional pieces – some measuring up to 16.5 feet high and over 18 feet wide,” reports Captain Shashi Bahl, Director of Chartering and a member of UTC’s Competence Center for Cement Plant Equipment Handling. “Much of what we’re transporting isn’t readily ‘stackable’ – a challenge we’re well equipped to handle.”

including construction of hundreds of steel frames to hold and protect oddly shaped pieces within square and rect-angular spaces. This helps us to load them efficiently, safely and securely.”

Wilczynska and colleagues Olga Ratnikova and Adriana Wooten are experienced members of the UTC Cement Competence Center team, based in New Jersey. For these two North American projects, they are working closely with UTC offices in China, Germany and Canada to coordinate the huge volumes of data and documen-tation associated with the logistics for hundreds of globally sourced parts and equipment shipments.

“Today’s modern cement plants rely heavi-ly on sophisticated high tech components to monitor and manage the production process,” notes Stephan Prueser, Bremen-based General Manager for UTC Germany. “Many of these are designed and built in Europe -- especially Germany. We con-solidate European supplier shipments to

the North American project sites in order to enhance transport cost efficiency. We also contract for air and sea transport, and supervise packing and crating, container loading and oversee customs clearances.”

“Working together, our CCC team maintains smooth communications with suppliers, transport providers, vessel managers and the ports. That, in turn, helps us keep our customer updated on transport schedules linked to critical-path construction timetables at the two sites,” explains Director of Projects Lennart Stridh.

Rodrigo Chittoni, head of the UTC Cement Competence Center and Captain Bahl make regular visits to Chinese manu-facturers to review dimensions, weights and delivery schedules for upcoming shipments. Capt. Bahl has decades of experience in vessel charters and load planning. He brings that expertise to bear for these projects, including on-site supervision of vessel load planning and stowage for each outbound voyage, and

Chittoni said several more voyages will be needed before all materials are delivered to the two sites around the middle of the coming year, including use of addi-tional break-bulk charters, roll-on/roll-off services, and container shipments. “It has been over two years of intense work,” he notes, “and an excellent example of UTC’s expertise in Cement Plant logistics, and our commitment to creating ’Global Logistics Solutions’ for our customers. We’ve handled five major cement plant logistics projects in just the past two years --in Canada, the U.S. and South America-- plus dozens of spot shipments related to plant maintenance and modernization.”

PARTS for today’s modern cement plants are sourced worldwide, many of them from suppliers throughout Europe. UTC’s German offices play an important role in collecting and consolidating regional shipments and then packing them for ocean and air transport to project sites. Doing so optimizes operational and cost efficiency and assures timely delivery - a key to critical-path construction success.

Best wishes for the holiday season and a prosperous new year from the UTC Overseas global family.
