CASE STUDIES

Henri Coanda International Airport of Bucharest is the largest airport in Romania, transited by over 10 million passengers in 2016. UTI collaboration with the airport dates back to 1996, when we took part in Phase I of the development and modernization process. The project consisted of security and telecommunications systems design, execution and maintenance.

The following year, UTI designed and implemented an integrated parking management system, using a proprietary parking solution. The objective was to increase productivity and revenue by delivering quality services and improve users’ experience.

In 1999, in response to the airport requirements, UTI had developed a fully customized ERP solution, especially designed to meet the specific needs of an airport - ICAR.

The innovative part of the system consisted in developing an airport activity-related operational module in addition to the financial, HR, and security modules of a classic ERP solution. The novelty of the operational module arises from the 3 sub-modules: Flight Information, Ground Management, and Terminal Management.

In 2003, the airport launched the Domestic Flights terminal for which UTI provided electrical and mechanical installations, low currents installation, baggage and passenger control systems.

Cluj-Napoca International Airport, the second largest airport in Romania, has reached almost 3 million passenger traffic in 2017. Over the last 10 years, Cluj Airport has had a spectacular evolution, becoming an important European hub for commercial and cargo flights.

UTI was involved in the airport modernization and expansion project, completed in 2008 as a general contractor and commissioner of the security and functional building infrastructure. We also set up a power station and erected the connection building between the two terminals. Overall, the Cluj-Napoca International Airport project meant 880 days and sometimes nights of hard work, 50 kilometers of pipes, 180 kilometers of electrical cables and a 29,000sqm built and fully equipped surface.

Since 2010, UTI has been providing technical maintenance services for the terminal and landside airport facilities.

In 2011 we have completed the works within Phase III of the development and modernization process with Henri Coanda International Airport that consisted in the building of a new passenger terminal. The new terminal construction was part of Romania’s plan of accession to the Schengen Area and is fully compliant with the Schengen technical standards and regulations.

UTI was responsible for the design, execution, and installation of the electrical network, plumbing and sanitary installation, HVAC, sound and telecommunications systems. We also executed the security system, integrating the access control components with the CCTV and fire detection and control systems.

The building installation works were completed over 10 months (June 2010-March 2011), 70% of them being finalized by the end of November 2010, on the occasion of Schengen evaluation visit. The excavation works under the runway platform and the power supply of the lighting system was also completed by UTI’s team. More than 200 people were involved in this project.

Since 2003, the company has been providing facility services for the mechano-energetic, low voltage, and runway lighting installations, under full warranty obligations.

During 2013-2014, UTI was involved in the modernization and development of Iasi International Airport, the fourth largest city in Romania and a hub to major European capitals. By extending the airport infrastructure and terminal passengers processing, the government intended to open new collaboration routes and attract new business in the context of reshaping the economic and cultural landscape of one of Romania’s most important regions.

In the first phase of the modernization project, UTI completed the design, construction, extension, commissioning, and implementation of the runway lighting installations, certified by ICAO, and the aircraft taxiways.

The works were completed within 23 months and the new runway of Iasi International Airport is currently the most modern, flexible aircraft runway in the country, measuring 2,400 meters in length.

In the second phase, UTI served as the lead contractor for the construction of the new airport terminal. The works were completed within 8 months. Our company was responsible for the design execution and installation of all systems and technical equipment.

The new terminal has 3,600 square meters, 6 check-in desks and a processing capacity of 360 passengers per hour. The airport is endowed with equipment and systems that comply with the international and European regulations on airport comfort and security.
